Nintendo has usually been the one to push controller innovations forward. Seriously, how much further can a standard controller go? I can't honestly see the 360 controller being improved upon. It is the best standard controller I've ever used. However, controllers using motion sensing tech can probably be improved. I think the standard controller should be replaced next gen. I think there is a way to make EVERY game genre work well with motion sensing. Even fighters.

For many things the wii-mote works just fine, but it's not precise enough for my tastes. That and anything involving lots of menu's (RPGs especially) would be a huge pain.

NO way! The day that wiimote type controllers takeover console gaming is the day I go back exclusively to my PC for keyboard & mouse goodness instead end of story!

That's too bad, because there is a good possibility that a wiimote-type of controller will be the standard next gen. Look at it this way...N64 sold FAR LESS than PS1, yet when Nintendo introduced analog and then the Rumble Pak, they both became the standard during the next gen. Wii is selling more than PS3 and 360, and yet...many people are saying Wiimote will not become the standard next gen.

Maybe an evolution of the Wiimote maybe something like two sides of the controller that can attach or seperate to become like Wiimote and nunchuck.

Why? Hit the minus button to access a menu, then the + button to scroll through other menus. Then use the Wiimote motion sensing to select what armor or weapon you want to equip, then equip it by pressing A. Then exit all the menus with the press of the B button. Pretty simple actually.

I find the Wii-mote ridiculously ugly for a gaming controller. Besides I don't want all my games with motion sensing in them. Motion Sensing to me has been the biggest gimmick this entire gen. I hope it doesn't carry on to the next gen. Make it an addon or somethin.

Yes. It makes almost ever genre easier.

Platformers/adventures - no change

Shooters - IR aiming

Racers - tilt control

RPGs - IR menu

RTS - IR pointer

Puzzles - Same, but IR can be used for many

Party games - obvious

Sports - feel more into game with actual passing, or an IR based gameplay like pro evo.

Fighters - standard pad is better.

I prefer the regular remote.

I think the Wiimote is a good start, but somehting even more involved would be much cooler.

Difference is that the analogue and rumble actually worked and improved the control of games. I dont think the Wii mote does that at all. Id still rather play RE4 on the gamecube and not the Wii.

The wiimote/nunchuck can do almost everything a standard pad can, but more. It's a matter of devs learning that things like waggle or IR are tools that they CAN use to make their games better, not toys.

It would be like replacing a standard screen (TV. Monitor) with a anal-probing device that directly uploads the images to your brain for a "ultimate immersive experience"

i agree TC. it needs improvements in many areas (and hopefully we will see em in ninty next console) but i think the wiimote and nunchuck (nunchuck is very important of course) would make a great replacement for the standard controller with improvements. its too old and out of date now.

the only genre that i can think of that suffers from the controller as it is now is the traditional beat em up (like street fighter or sould caliber). however put a few more buttons in sensible places in an improved version and the problems sorted. lets not even mention the types of fighters that could be made if they were completly desigend with the IR pointer and motion sensing in mind (wii boxing is only the tip of the ice berg).

i miss it when im playing on other consoles. i was playing uncharted earlier and i just kept thinking "give me a mouse and keyboard or give me a wiimote and nunchuck PLEASE!".

I did not enjoy the Wiimote aiming in Prime enough to suppose that IR aiming in FPS games is better or can be more precise.

Mouse aiming >>>>> Wii aiming anyday

Same with anything that involves some sort of menu, or RTS games.

Personally, I don't care which controls are "better", assuming you use that term with respect to accuracy. Apparently KB&M are more accurate than controllers and allow more control options, but I still prefer a regular controller. For me, it is all about comfort. I don't want to need a flat surface to put my KB&M on, and I don't want to have to hit a bunch of buttons. With the Wiimote, I don't want to have to use motion to control what happens.

Yes, I'm lazy, I know.

Why not take a standard pad. Split in half give them both motion sensing while having a way to connect and interlock them. That way you'd have a standard pad and a wiimote/nunchuck setup all in one.

no way. The wiimote os ok for casual games like wii sports, but not for more complicated games.

Imagine playing tekken with a wiimore, you could never be fast enough!

The way i see it the controller is now just about perfected and works with every genre.

Its like when you play mariokart, its fun, but have you noticed howmuch easier they made it to compensate for the wiimote? On all the retro laps they have widened the tracks like mad, the ghost one was harder but is now incredibly easy.

the wiimote is ok for casuals, but for everyone else it would be horrible.

Wow...lots of hate for the Wiimote in this thread. People better learn to like it, because going by Nintendo's history of controllers, other gaming companies eventually implement Nintendo's ideas. D-pad, rumble, analog, shoulder buttons. And like I said...even though N64 sold far worse than PS1, companies STILL decided to implement analog and rumble into the next gen. Now, Wii is outselling every other console, and people are actually DOUBTING that a wiimote-like controller won't be the standard next gen? Wow...just wow. People better learn to like the Wiimote, or quit console gaming next gen, because this will become the standard.

Also, look at it this way, Microsoft and Sony are realizing that far superior graphics with a standard controller ARE NOT beating the Wii, which has far worse graphics, but a motion-sensing controller. What do you think Microsoft and Sony will do to remedy this next gen? They sure aren't going to stick to upgrading graphics and have the same standard controller as this gen. Nope, they will probably upgrade graphics AND add a Wiimote-like device.

It is really the only thing Sony and Microft can do to compete next gen...and they know this.

I seriously hope that isn't the direction Microsoft and Sony are heading in. Don't get me wrong, the Wii controler isn't bad, but I wouldn't want to use it for every game. Why on Earth do you want to standardize consoles? You might as well just scrap them all and make one universal console. There needs to be more than one option to differentiate controlers, otherwise I'm assuming there will be a lot less console gamers, and the Wii will have officially started to kill gaming.

No. Never. Ever. I hope to dear god that doesnt happen. Don't get me wrong, the Wiimote is fun and I love my Wii, but some games just arent suited for the Wii mote, not to mention I prefer to use a controller as opposed to a Wiimote/nunchuk.

Then the console gaming industry dies. A rumble pack and analog control weren't drastic changes. Despite having an analog stick there was still a D-Pad and rumble could still be switched on and off. However, changing the entire format of the controller is something that's strongly unlikely because clearly it's not universally accepted(just look at the responses in this thread). It's foolish to even think that the Wii-mote will become anything even resembling standard. Remember gimmicks never last for all that long.

For many things the wii-mote works just fine, but it's not precise enough for my tastes. That and anything involving lots of menu's (RPGs especially) would be a huge pain.KodiakGTS

How the hell is what is effectively a 3D mouse a pain for playing RPG's? anybody that has used the Wii channel menu should know the controller could potentially work great for an RPG if the console ever gets a decent one.

Wiimote works well with EVERY genre except for fighting. It even works well with Mario Kart. You really think Microsoft and Sony will just upgrade graphics next gen, and still have the standard controller with tiny moderations? 360 has the best standard controller I've ever used, yet Microsoft is LOSING to Nintendo in the console war. Sony is losing to Nintendo in the console war. And they damn well know it is because a lot of people are buying Wii because of the Wiimote. Sony and Microsoft know they have to do something next gen to try to regain the top spot. It is just like what happened to Gamecube. Other than the small discs, the Gamecube was really no different than PS2 and Xbox, yet it didn't sell well at all. So, Nintendo had to do something drastic, and it is working. You think Sony and Microsoft aren't paying attention to this?

Except its complete bs when it comes to shooters.

Mouse aiming >>>>> Wii aiming anyday

Same with anything that involves some sort of menu, or RTS games.

100000

i think that goes without saying.....but against the PS3 or 360 controller i think the TC was talking about.

so really its a case of

Mouse aiming>>>>> wii aiming>>>>> 360/PS3 aiming.

same with rts games. the wiimote is effectively a motion sensing mouse and the nunchuck just adds loads of extra function.

Yes. It makes almost ever genre easier.

Platformers/adventures - no change

Shooters - IR aiming

Racers - tilt control

RPGs - IR menu

RTS - IR pointer

Puzzles - Same, but IR can be used for many

Party games - obvious

Sports - feel more into game with actual passing, or an IR based gameplay like pro evo.

Fighters - standard pad is better.

LordQuorthon

you're kidding right

No. If you had played games that use the Wiimote correctly, you'd notice that he's right about everything.

even RTS

I'd go back to PC gaming, I'd rather have the hassle of that than the gimmicky dumbed down casual games, yes yes i know it has some "hardcore" games as well but there lacking.
