The Wii is a casual system no doubt about it. Yes it has Metroid, Resident Evil Red Steel and others. But the bulk of its library is games like cooking mama, and Wii fitness. Wii fitness sold over 10 millinon copies 1/3 of all Wii owners have this game Metroid aprox one million less than 3%. Wii adds grandprents and families of 4 or more playing wii sports. That is hard core like a Disney movie. The Nintendo press confrence stated that their focus is not people who already play gmes the hardcore but people would try a game casual. Nintendo is not focused on the hardcore. Just because a girl wears a tank top and cuts her hair short does not mean she is a man. prove me wrong.

Nintendo could not stand losing for a third time catering to self proclaimed "hardcore" gamers. So, they took a page out of Sony's playbook and succeeded.

Nintendo DID focus on the core gamer when I had my NES, SNES, N64 but the cube was the start of this fall from gaming grace and the new Nintendo is a stranger to me. I still own a Wii but it gets very little play. I go months without touching it. no nintendo system has every done this to me. Nintendo does no speak to me like it use to. Im not hardcore Im a gamaing addict. Evry open to all kinds of games. some of my favorite games of last gen was Mr. Misquito, REZ, GTA san andres, and MGS3. Metroid was good, SMG was great but those were the only games that I played heavily on the Wii. Trauma Center is cool but Red Steel sucked, Call of Duty Wii sucked, Wii fitness sucked.

Wii snatched up half the PS2's fan base, added it to the Nintendo fanbase, and then set course for the retirement homes this generation.

Wii is definitely casual friendly, but there's some gems, and especially this year a LOT of good looking games are coming out.

Everyone is their target. All the video game consoles are targeted at everyone because everyone has money.

Nintendo started with the grab the casual (mii, wii play) and then make the hardcore happy, while Microsoft went the other route (wait a bit and then Avatars, and family games like UNO and Scene It). They are both selling very well now, so both are doing a great job for their shareholders.

Nintendo caters to both demographics. And honestly, games like Halo 3, GTAIV, Call of Duty 4: MW - can all be classified as "casual" games.

Since you used Disney as an Example does that mean that the Pixar movies are not "real" movies and only for kids? Even though they are among the most popular, critically acclaimed, and watched movies year after year?

Just like the Wii, there are hardcore games and there are casual games. The Wii is probably the most mainstream console to have come out since the Playstation, and this is the only choice Nintendo have to regain that lost popularity, and you know what, they succeeded. Call them casual, but Sony did it first, and denying it would only make it worse.

sorta, I think that calling games exclusivly hardcore is stupid, but calling games casual in some cases is appropriatete (IE: Wii Play.) I mean true you can play all games any way that you want, but I think that some games have a higher chance of being played hardcore (IE: Killzone 2, Gears of War) and some were more focused to be played by casual gamers(ie: Wii Play) it just depends on what demographic the developer is catering towards in the game.

HAHAHA you called GTA IV and Halo 3 hardcore!!!!! Those are two and in GTA's case the most casualized franchises on the market. Universal appeal, high sales from folks who don;t follow video games, just the latest "trends" Yep they;re casual.

well this whole thread is based on opinion, and yes Id say that GTA and Halo francchises are both mainly catered towards hardcore gamers, I am not going to call them exclusivly hardcore because no game is.

Esplain to me how a game like Tetris, or even some of the games in Wii Play are Casual, When they take years to master, can be played at an elite level, and are all about mastering your skill and attaining a higher score. And a game Like Halo and GTA IV are hardcore, when you complete a story mode that you can't ever fail at and once that's over, move on t an online mulstiplayer mode, where you will eventually attain a high level of experience and rank no matter your skill level.

I think it entirely depends on the player, not the game.

Anyone can play say, Final Fantasy III for a number of hours, and it can be a "hardcore" game, I guess.

Then you can have people play shorter session once or twice a week, then it could be considered "casual" in the same sense.

Personally, I don't think too much about it - I just play whatever I want, regardless of what stupid labels people give them.

I never claimed that tetris was casual, the topic says Wii, not all of Nintendo, and Wii play is most definetly catered towards casual audiences, it is five min games that with the possible exception of the tank game are all able to be beaten in under 5 minutes. YOu are just rambling on, you can lose at Halo and GTA, while yeah there are no game overs that force you to restartor anything, there is none of that in the wiis larger titles either, they all have save systems, so by saying that games like Halo and GTA are mainly catered towards the casual you are also claiming that games on Wii like Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Twilight PRincess etc. all are as well.

Pretty much yeah they are. Zelda is probably Wii's most casual franchise, since it takes no skill or ability to compete, just progress. The original Donkey Kong is probably the most hardcore game I've ever seen. Watch the Documentary "King of Kong" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMJZ-_bJKdI It will change the way perceive the concept of hardcore and casual. Those guys are real gamers

I will agree with you that older games are a lot more hardcore then the games now, but I dont really associate hardcore with difficulty, I more associate it with depth and amount of time required playing, and how long you play it. (like it isnt just a pick up and play, you devote several hours to it.)

I can agree to disagree with that. I just bristle at the idea of games like GTA being called hardcore when they have such broad appeal due to their casualization. I prefer skill based games that require time and investment. Not just "turn you brain off and push buttons" although they are fun and certainly have their place. Afterall I love me some COD

yeh, lets just agree to disagree then, this argument is going nowhere, and the last thing system wars needs is another pointless argument :P
