As you know, Halo is the best first person shooter franchise ever. It is also the most popular. Before Halo, console FPS were laughed at - even Goldeneye was vastly inferior to what was on the PC during them. But then Halo: Combat Evolved came out and changed FPS forever, PC or console. FPS - a once PC-dominated genre - now had a home on consoles.

Halo Wars is coming out, and is being developed by a respected RTS developer (albeit now a dead one lol). Will Halo Wars pull a Halo: Combat Evolved and make RTS respectable on consoles? Microsoft is trying to push RTS on consoles with garbage ports like Supreme Commander and Warhammer (though C&C3 was an okay port), but I think with Halo Wars RTS will finally have a home on consoles.

With the exception of Rome: Total War (or any Total War game) and C&C, I am saying it right now: Halo Wars > PC RTS. Just like Halo > PC FPS.

considering it's not a port of a pc title, and is developed especially for the console, the controls should be better. It looks fairly decent too, but I'll probably wait to try it out. Maybe if there's a demo.

Here is where you lost your point.. It clearly shows how extremely bias you are.. Halo has never won GOTY here, nor did Halo 3 the best one, win Shooter of the year last year.. Crysis beat it..

That being said its doubtful.. Ensemble crashed and burned after Age of Mythology.. And I have seen nothing aside from the Halo name that makes it special.. I say it once, I'll say it again.. WHY ARN'T they doing more Turn based strategy games for the console.. The controlers doesn't need to be dumbed down because you don't have to be quick like a RTS.. I guess devs figure the majority of the console base must have attention spans of a small dog.

I believe that the combination of Halo Wars and Tom Clancy's EndWar will change how gamers view console RTS's.

They won't be on par or better than PC RTS games, but they aren't aiming for the same experience. I think both of these games are going to be fun to play, and thats all that matters. Take a look at Pikmin, a stratgy game, that aimed at a different audience and had a much different style of play then the norm. Yet it was an awesome game, so micromanagment and thousands of units on screen is not a necessity, it just depends on the style of game.

Besides, LOTR: BFME 2 and C&C 3 already proved that consoles are capable of having good RTS's available on them.

No way. Halo Wars will likely be a better console RTS than previous games, but it still won't be as good as a PC RTS.

Halo has easy, but deep gameplay, great weapons, great enemies, great main character (he's the Mario of FPS), great multiplayer, great vehicles... it's a household name. Name another FPS series that has hundreds of people waiting for it on launch day, breaking ENTERTAINMENT records (not just gaming records).

Halo 1 easily had great single player and multiplayer. Hours of fun there. But after its hike to success, Halo 2/3 are sort of a love-hate thing.
To be honest, I wasn't too impressed with Age of Empires 3, and I played Starcraft instead of Age of Empires 2. Halo Wars doesn't look amazing to me. Unless they fixed some clipping issues and combat is epic and intense, I'll concentrate on other titles first. Maybe I've just been too used to Company of Heroes, but AoE definitely feels wonky to me.

gameplay was nothing special in halo. I thought most of the game was very repetitive and diden't take atvantage of the large enviorments in Halo 1

I thought the weapeons were bad. I mean why is it the future and the assualt rifle has like 60 bullets but it can't hit **** because its mainly for close range I guess, makes no sence but im not going to go in depth with the others.

I have no complaint about the enemys.

How is the main character great? he has no great backstory in the game and hes more refered to as a "Badass" character. Really hes popular but I just cannot see why. Must be the suit.

multyplayer is great for consles no complaints.

I thought the vehicals were ok. Nothing great but they were kinda cool.

Halo is a casual game overall its not for the better people who played better games but it can still appeal to them overall if they like that space stuff.

And the First Halo has got to be the most overrated game I have ever played. the Ending IMO was one of the worst in gameing history and the weapeons, balence, gameplay was just awful. 5.5 score IMO.

Halo Wars should be considered the #1 upcoming RTS in terms of expectations. Ensemble Studios has had a stellar record of outstanding games on the PC. It seems pretty obvious to me that as a studio they were forced by their owner Microsoft into making a Halo-based RTS for a console instead of what they really wanted to work on.

That said, I hope Ensemble will rise to the challenge dumped in their laps and create something that can satisfy the legions of die-hard, loyal fans of their first-rate RTS games.

Great games usually remain popular, however. Take The Matrix - The Matrix 2 broke all sorts of records, but sucked. Thus, The Matrix 3 flopped. Halo 2 was fun and well liked, so Halo 3 was a success as well.

The weapons are great because they are fun to use. Technically you're right - the assault rifle has no distance, but it's still a fun, recognizable weapon. Master Chief is a great character because he is marketable, like Mario. Mario has almost no backstory but people like him too because he is a recognizable, iconic character. Gordon Freeman, Crysis dude, etc. etc. are okay characters but not as great as Master Chief.

Halo is fun. Technically it's not that great, but no other game lets you have hours of endless fun with buddies, the single player is actually pretty fun, and I think people purposely try to bring it down.

Nothing to me was more fun than having like 10 of my friends over, hooking up TVs in all the bedrooms, and going at it on Halo 2 for hours on end, then hitting it up on Xbox Live...

Halo is the best example of a fun FPS, which is what PC FPS lacked. Goldeneye was also a fun FPS which is why it was so successful.

Ms are jerks:(

they throw away ensemble studios away and their makeing a Halo game for them LOL!

but my expections are low. I mean ensemble dosen't have any consle experiance really and since MS dropped em I think Ensemble would want revenge.

I thought the first matrix was great:)

Mario was a very charming character. Hes set out their for the causals and made one of the greatist platformers ever.

I don't live near my firends so I disagree with the whole play with buddies thing. and with other online games I can play with my"buddies" as well.

I do bring down the single player experiance because it dosen't have a good story, is repetitive, and short.

why would you have 10 friends over at your house all playing halo 3 hooking up other Tv's in other bedrooms when you could be playing online? IDK it dosen't make sence IMO.

I disagree I think PC FPS are better. I mean at least a game like Crysis has everything you would want in a single player experiance. Great graphics, decent story, Epic action sequences, and FREEDOM in the way you play the game.

and I never played golden eye so I woulden't know.

Halo 1 didn't have online.... ahem.

Halo has easy, but deep gameplay, great weapons, great enemies, great main character (he's the Mario of FPS), great multiplayer, great vehicles... it's a household name. Name another FPS series that has hundreds of people waiting for it on launch day, breaking ENTERTAINMENT records (not just gaming records).

......Popularity doesn't equal quality.. I suppose by this logic I can make a convincing argument that McDonalds is some of the best food out there both taste and nutrition wise?

bleh why do people still eat their>_>

eating their food is just gonna make you fat and lazy:lol:

Halo Wars should be considered the #1 upcoming RTS in terms of expectations. Ensemble Studios has had a stellar record of outstanding games on the PC. It seems pretty obvious to me that as a studio they were forced by their owner Microsoft into making a Halo-based RTS for a console instead of what they really wanted to work on.

That said, I hope Ensemble will rise to the challenge dumped in their laps and create something that can satisfy the legions of die-hard, loyal fans of their first-rate RTS games.

JangoWuzHere

Ms are jerks:(

they throw away ensemble studios away and their makeing a Halo game for them LOL!

but my expections are low. I mean ensemble dosen't have any consle experiance really and since MS dropped em I think Ensemble would want revenge.

You don't think that MS will reallocate the employs of Ensemble Studios to different developers to create other games?

Its not like Ensemble Studios is gone, just the brand name.

AHUGECAT

Have you gotten back to reality yet? Or do need more time?

Halo Wars will sell because of it's name mostly. It's quality is rather skeptical because it's only offering an RTS formula, while new on consoles, is very very simple when compared to PC RTS games.

If you actually think Halo Wars is gonna be competing with the likes of Company of Heroes, Dawn of War 2 or Starcraft 2 then I must say you're most definately mistaken.

You also must be on something if you seriously think Halo is better than PC FPS games. That's just a pathetic attempt at trolling.

Halo has outscored every PC first person shooter, and Halo 2 outscored almost all of them as well. Halo 3 not only scored very well (new rating system makes it hard to outscore), but sold millions.

I expect Halo Wars to outscore and outsell Company of Heroes, Dawn of War 2 and Starcraft 2.

Sorry what? Esembles dont have a perfect track record, and havnt done this type of RTS before.

EA/Westwood have been doing C&C on consoles for years and Halo Wars doesnt look like it improves anything really.... over the C&C games... no more complexity ... just a different artstyle and set of interface principles.

Halo: Combat Evolved is an FPS made by BUNGIE, which is NOT ESEMBLE as you well know. THESE 2 GAMES OTHER THANK MILKING FRANCHISE NAMES have NOTHING in common ;)

You basically just admitted the fascination is all because its "HALO". other than the Ensemble bit....

Goldeneye and PD outscored Halo because they were the first of their kind, practically. But Goldeneye and Perfect Dark can't hold a candle to Halo.

Ensemble has a lot of history with great RTS'. Age of Mythology is a pretty good RTS. Halo Wars has the Halo brand name, thus giving it an extra 2 points in scores.

Doesn't need to be better, or improve. It needs to give console gamers a nice RTS game that will be the standard for future RTS games, so console users can finally get the only genre it hasn't dominated yet from the PC: Strategy games.

Halo was originally an RTS; what better way to go back to the roots than by giving the franchise to your number 1 (now dead lol!) RTS developer?

How is it ridiculous? There both casual games that people will blindly buy due to hype without caring about scores, awards or quality. They only buy whats popular and nothing else. All halo did was make console shooters mainstream. Halo is a decent fps but not that greatest one ever. And if I recall half life 1 for 50 GOTY awards

It's ridiculous because you are going to use that for every popular game, and you just can't. Halo is popular for a reason - because it is a good game. 50 Cent: Bulletproof as the 50 Cent brand name, thus it will sell, even if it is bad (and ever thought, maybe to 50 Cent's fanbase, it ISN'T a bad game?). Halo has to sell based on its merits because it is first and foremost a video game franchise.

Halo sells because it is a good, fun, simple yet deep game. High AAA scores everywhere support this fact. Not to mention most players love it.

Are you f-ing kidding me?

Please enlighten me on what Halo Wars does in an RTS that hasn't been done on PC? It will NOT outsell Starcraft 2 by any means. Hell SC2 is gonna be bought by all of Korea!

If you actually think a game that carries a simple RTS formula is going to outscore the ones I mentioned then you're more blind than Ray Charles.

As for FPS', explain why Halo 2, which you think is better than PC FPS games, only managed to get a 7 on the PC version? Do you actually think when critics reviewed the Halo games they were comparing it to all FPS' on every platform? Please.

Halo got its praise because of the standards of the Xbox. Besides with PC games scores rarely make the game.

Deus Ex gets an 8.2 here. I frequently hear from people that it's one of the greatest games in existance.

Halo 2 gets a 9.4 here and everyone with half a brain knows it doesn't hold a candle to Deus Ex.

If we compare them next to each other with the same types of games, I agree.

But then, you can bring in games like Pikmin that are strategy games but are completely different because they are designed for consoles. This is when things start to get more abstract, and it doesn't seem fair to compare the two. I think EndWar and Halo Wars will prove that, if approached properly, consoles can have their own style of RTS's. Avoiding the micromanagement is key.
