How is it ridiculous? There both casual games that people will blindly buy due to hype without caring about scores, awards or quality. They only buy whats popular and nothing else. All halo did was make console shooters mainstream. Halo is a decent fps but not that greatest one ever. And if I recall half life 1 for 50 GOTY awardsAHUGECAT

It's ridiculous because you are going to use that for every popular game, and you just can't. Halo is popular for a reason - because it is a good game. 50 Cent: Bulletproof as the 50 Cent brand name, thus it will sell, even if it is bad (and ever thought, maybe to 50 Cent's fanbase, it ISN'T a bad game?). Halo has to sell based on its merits because it is first and foremost a video game franchise.

Halo sells because it is a good, fun, simple yet deep game. High AAA scores everywhere support this fact. Not to mention most players love it.

So that means its the greatest FPS ever made? halo is a good but average game

I think saying Halo Wars > PC rts is way off. Have you ever played Dawn of War or Company of Heroes? From the videos shown off so far, Halo Wars is about a decade behind games like that. They've gone for such a generic set up; acquire a resource, use resource to make buildings, use buildings to make units, fight enemy with said units.

No proper squad system. No cover. No morale. No assault or long-range. All of the videos just show one army of covenant standing still, firing at an army of marines standing still.

How can it be good but average? That's like saying a game is great but mediocre. :?

As you know, Halo is the best first person shooter franchise ever. It is also the most popular. Before Halo, console FPS were laughed at - even Goldeneye was vastly inferior to what was on the PC during them. But then Halo: Combat Evolved came out and changed FPS forever, PC or console. FPS - a once PC-dominated genre - now had a home on consoles.

Halo Wars is coming out, and is being developed by a respected RTS developer (albeit now a dead one lol). Will Halo Wars pull a Halo: Combat Evolved and make RTS respectable on consoles? Microsoft is trying to push RTS on consoles with garbage ports like Supreme Commander and Warhammer (though C&C3 was an okay port), but I think with Halo Wars RTS will finally have a home on consoles.

With the exception of Rome: Total War (or any Total War game) and C&C, I am saying it right now: Halo Wars > PC RTS. Just like Halo > PC FPS.

mo0ksi

Have you gotten back to reality yet? Or do need more time?

Halo Wars will sell because of it's name mostly. It's quality is rather skeptical because it's only offering an RTS formula, while new on consoles, is very very simple when compared to PC RTS games.

If you actually think Halo Wars is gonna be competing with the likes of Company of Heroes, Dawn of War 2 or Starcraft 2 then I must say you're most definately mistaken.

You also must be on something if you seriously think Halo is better than PC FPS games. That's just a pathetic attempt at trolling.

Halo has outscored every PC first person shooter, and Halo 2 outscored almost all of them as well. Halo 3 not only scored very well (new rating system makes it hard to outscore), but sold millions.

I expect Halo Wars to outscore and outsell Company of Heroes, Dawn of War 2 and Starcraft 2.

Are you f-ing kidding me?

Please enlighten me on what Halo Wars does in an RTS that hasn't been done on PC? It will NOT outsell Starcraft 2 by any means. Hell SC2 is gonna be bought by all of Korea!

If you actually think a game that carries a simple RTS formula is going to outscore the ones I mentioned then you're more blind than Ray Charles.

As for FPS', explain why Halo 2, which you think is better than PC FPS games, only managed to get a 7 on the PC version? Do you actually think when critics reviewed the Halo games they were comparing it to all FPS' on every platform? Please.

Halo got its praise because of the standards of the Xbox. Besides with PC games scores rarely make the game.

Deus Ex gets an 8.2 here. I frequently hear from people that it's one of the greatest games in existance.

Halo 2 gets a 9.4 here and everyone with half a brain knows it doesn't hold a candle to Deus Ex.

Halo has better gameplay, is funner, better story, etc. etc. than Deus Ex and this is coming from someone likes Deus Ex. Halo is just superior.

I have said many times that Perfect Dark is one of my favourite games of all time; but seriously, better than Halo? How? Have you watched the recent Yahtzee vid about nostalgia, because it applies here. Perfect Dark was amazing at the time, but go and play it now. The controls are awful, the graphics suck and the AI is non-existant.

I dont understand why people hate on Halo.

Halo is the reason the Xbox is still here. There is no other game franchise that can claim they helped a system from doom. Halo is the reason the Xbox outsold the PS2 for a holiday season (which was thought to be impossible). Halo gets people hyped up - people wrap around retail stores to buy it on day 1. It has a 50% attach ratio. Only GTA can claim the things Halo claims.

Halo is popular because it is the best franchise ever.

This thread shows both ends of the extremes, if you ask me. On one hand we have Halo Wars being better than Starcraft 2. On the other, we have Halo having the worst ending in gaming history, and being given a 5.5 score.

I ask frequently why people hate on Halo, but i think it's a counter to the people who go over the top with love. It's an amazing game, and a AAA franchise. All three games managed to be brilliant, which is quite rare. Developers usually mess it up with sequels.

But to say it's the greatest game ever made is almost as bad as to say it's one of the worst, or to say that it's anything less than an awesome franchise, which it so obviously is. Sure it might not suit your personal preference, but it's obviously a great game so why hate? :?

I think Halo is the best FPS on consoles, by a pretty decent margin. It's certainly fair to say it's one of the best shooters of all time, but not THE best. I think games like Half-Life and Crysis (especially warhead) beat it out on that one.

But I like Perfect Dark better. I can live with its problems, because I like the multitude of options that it gives me. Halo is a lot better in terms of presentation and Ai and controls, but it does not offer me the same things Pd does. I prefer Perfect Dark anyday.

In fact, if I were to hack into my cartridge and port it over to my PC, I would honestly quit gaming. I'd be done. But that's just me. I am an original Perfect Dark fanboy.

Starcraft II and Dawn of War II say hi! The chances that Halo Wars is going to be better then both are slim. Have you even seen videos of SCII and DoWII? Both look amazing. And if you are talking about PC RTS overall, then . Not saying Halo Wars is going to bad, but I doubt it going to be as good as many PC RTS.

As for Halo, it was a great game, but slightly overrated, and there are better FPS games IMO, like Call of Duty 2 and Timesplitters 2. The story was good, the gameplay is pretty good, but a lot of the levels weren't great.

Ninja-Hippo

They are customizable in different ways. It really depends on what you're looking for. I like to go nuts with a couple of Dark sims and a couple of meat sims on a map with crossbows, dragons, and combat knives. That combat scenareo is really uncomparable with anything else. I have never played a game that comes close to giving me that kind of insanity. Timesplitters comes close (bricks only matches are insane), but no other shooter gives me that kind of customization.

For example. I get shot by a crossbow and I can't see anything. I am out of ammo, so I go to that nice machine gun lying on the ground. Guess what? That is a Dragon's proxy mine. Honeslty, that kind of madness is something that is unique to me. Halo doesn't have that kind of madness.

That's not the fault of Halo. It doesn't try to be like Perfect Dark. Halo has it's own madness which is fun in it's own way. And that's fantastic. But that same madness that Halo has, I can find in other shooters (battlefield 2, UT2K4). Not so with Perfect Dark. Like I said, Timesplitters comes close, but it goes in a wackier direction. What Perfect Dark offers me, I cannot find in any other FPS. Trust me, I've been trying.

I tell you, if Perfect Dark comes to the XBA, I will buy an xbox, just for that. case closed. My gaming life would be complete. Being able to play 4 player split screen with all bots and all explosives with no slowdown and dual analogue controls would destroy any other FPS in my opinion.

The fanboyism and circular logic in this thread is lolworthy.

Halo: Combat Evolved may be a great game, but it is neither the greatest FPS ever made nor the most popular one. Ensemble have gone from making great games (in the eye of gamers) to RTSs that are at best, good.

To argue that the simplistic, generic and uninspired formula that Halo Wars will be using will even so much as let it be superior to what Dawn of War II, Starcraft II and Empire: Total War have to offer in terms of progression, advancement and polish in the same year is blatant stupidity. Period.

For the record, Total War is easily a contender for "Best RTS series" by today's standards. Command and Conquer, on the other hand....

Its the most overrated game of all time IMO. its medicore overall I just don't like alot of the stuff in it and im a sci-fi fan so most of the time I do like that kinda stuff. AAA I woulden't give it. Games got good multyplayer but the other half I really wan to play is the singleplayer. I thought the game was very repetitve in single player. you are never doing anything new in the game besides shooting and killing. I also have to question why Halo 1 was a bit open ended but Halo 2 and 3 weren't

Another thing I hated about halo was the damn flood. they were cool at first but then theygot really annoying. really they swarm you constaintly with great numbers makeing them way to hard to avoid.

I also diden't like Plazma grenades. Im doing well in the game untill a grunt throws a sticky like grenade and blows me up in 2 secs. I find this unfair and stupid overall its just a 1 hit kill thats unavoidable at times.

I could go on nitpicking this game to death but then I would run out of things to pick about and once I picked everything I hated about the game theirs nothing really left for me

There are respectable console strategy games, they are just turn based or have the name pikmin. A classical RTS format just won't cut it without a keyboard and mouse. Even if it is decent, I guarantee it will still feel second rate in comparison.

P.S. Halo is fun, but overrated for what it really offers. Goldeneye is to console FPS what Jimi Hendrix is to guitar playing, fyi.

1. Dude, I respect your passion, but look around yourself and face a reality - yeah Halo is great. It's even awesome. It is the best. But only on consoles. There are way too many better first person shooters on PC that Halo just can't compete with.

2. Microsoft certainly will popularize RTS games on 360 with the releasing of Halo Wars.

3. Again, I respect your passion, but let's get some facts straight:

- let's even assume that Halo Wars, in its current state is so great, even GOD himself would envy it. But you don't know it yet, 'cause IT AINT OUT YET.

- StarCraft. Yeah, I know. Everyone uses StarCraft in order to rub it on someone's face. But, it's a damned sport and a most popular RTS game on a planet. Ever. How the hell could Halo Wars even try to compete with that?

4. Regarding your sig: I'm using Vista Home Premium for two years and it crashed once - about half an hour I installed it and realised I installed the wrong sound drivers. It took me about 2 minutes to solve the problem. Learn to use your damned PC.

Well Advanced Wars is fantastic (docked about 100 hours in AW DS).

Though that is a handheld console.

I doubt Halo wars is going to have an impact.

Besides console FPS has always been very popular, and Halo certainly didnt popularise or level console up to the PC standard. Goldeneye 64 and Perfect Dark were easily up there with PC shooters of their respective times.
Halo was just a great console shooter that pushed itself up to the PC standard - many of those being technicals (like vehicles, a.i. and map design).

Other than that "Halo Wars > PC RTS. Just like Halo > PC FPS." is the most idiotic thing I have read all day.
Even for its time Halo didn't stride over PC titles... hell games like Flashpoint and Tribes 2 were already ahead in their respective areas before the game was released.

Halo 1 didn't have online.... ahem.

Halo has easy, but deep gameplay, great weapons, great enemies, great main character (he's the Mario of FPS), great multiplayer, great vehicles... it's a household name. Name another FPS series that has hundreds of people waiting for it on launch day, breaking ENTERTAINMENT records (not just gaming records).

AHUGECAT

No, no, no, no.

And you would think the most heavily marketed game in history would break sales records, and be well known by gamers - wouldn't you...

Logic like yours seems to scream that you haven't played a good range of shooters at all.

Halo 1 was a good game, and great for console platforms. It didnt pioneer anything or break boundaries, but it was very well polished and had a solid singleplayer and a great multiplayer. For console gamers this was a very noteable step fowards.

However the PC gaming spectrum at the time was a whole different story.

Jeesh I was one of the people hyping Halo before its release - and had gone from a Nintendo fanboy (and PC gamer) to an Xbox fanboy (and PC gamer) - at the time. Difference was that I was also sinking my teeth into everything on PC at the time... which was loads and loads of shooters (and RTSs)

To the hermits (like our crysis guy) this: halo review from gamespot: Not only is this easily the best of the Xbox launch games, but it's easily one of the best shooters ever, ON ANY PLATFORM!

It's all opinion which is the best FPSseries but you guy's always say it is average comparred to a PC-FPS! i played half-life, half-life 2, far cry, doom, quacke, ... and halo was still awsome and one of the best FPshooters i ever played! So stop it! It got an 9.7, it"s 7 years ago!

O, and i remind you about goldeneye and perfect dark!! Two of the greatsest FPS ever... and they are on a console!!!! WOW

Now, about RTS... it will never be better on a console than on the pc, simple as that!

To the lemmings: halo 2 review from gamespot: The PC has more than its fair share of amazing shooters that blow Halo 2 away in every possible way.

Euhm! Did i ever said something about halo 2? Halo:ce is far better then halo 2! you can mock halo 2 and 3 all you want, but halo:ce was amazing

From the review of halo:ce pc: Halo is still a tremendously entertaining game on its own merits, and it can easily be placed in the same category as other all-time greatest shooters, like Doom and Half-Life.

There are many 'great FPS of all time'.

Yes Halo is one of the great FPSs, as is Goldenye and Perfect Dark.

The thing is -they are console games in a list flooded with PC shooters - so somehow they stand head and shoulders above greats like System Shock 2?

The gamespot hall of fame is any indication.

As a Halo Fan myself...why did you have to come of so blatantly bias.

Halo isn't the BEST FPS ever...and neither will the RTS>

THe FPS games by bungie were just really great games all around....

The RTS by ensemble should be good overall, I just don't think it will be on par with a game like Dawn of War 2.

With the exception of Rome: Total War (or any Total War game) and C&C, I am saying it right now: Halo Wars > PC RTS. Just like Halo > PC FPS.

You think Halo Wars will be better than Starcraf2 and Dawn of War 2? Really? :D :D :D

Now I would love to see a Halo RTS built striclty for the PC in mind and made by Relic....

But i might as well wait for hell to freeze over before microsoft honestly lets a GREAT Halo RTS ever get made.

Halo Wars isn't gonna make console RTS's "respectable" but it is gonna set a precedent for them, Microsoft is trying to perfect C-RTS controls in order to encourage dev.'s to make more of them on the 360, thus giving them an edge on that market and an advantage on Sony and Nintendo. or at least that's what they're trying.

while i believe that halo wars might bring console RTS to new standards it will most likely be regarded as a "dumbed down" experience when compared to PC RTS'

But i don't want to say it's the best FPS! I just want some respect for halo:ce! It gets bashed all the time and i hate it! ass for the hall of fame, i'm sure that halo will be recognised in it! It takes time for a game before it gets in there! gta3 got in it last year ( didn't look for a long time )! i can be wrong on that one

I don't say it's better then the PC shooters , but i think it"s heavily underrated by alot of people ( not by critics )

The console isn't going to be respected for it's RTS games, I'm sorry but it's true. That's like saying that PC will be respected for it's platformers. That doesn't mean there wont be good RTS on consoles; in fact, I thought Battle for Middle Earth 2 was fantastic on the 360, but it feels much better with a mouse just like you'd rather play Psychonauts on your XBox even though you can hook up your controller to the PC.

Viable? Maybe.

Respected? lulz.

I watched one of the earlier interviews and the developers talked about how they had to get rid of all this stuff they wanted and were generally constrained because they had to work everything around a controller.

Dude. Halo did not change FPS gaming forever. I wouldn't even say Halo was innovative. I think they combined run of the mill FPS action to make a fun game. But don't go off on a tangent saying it changed FPS gaming forever. That resposibility lies in the hands of a little game I like to call Counter-Strike 1.6

Also, in regards to the post topic, I think the new Cid Mier (spelling?) Civilization game just got pretty good reviews as a console RTS. I played the demo and enjoyed it.

RTS games without a mouse simply do not work. They end up clunky, slower than their PC counterparts and much less satisfying, I've also become somewhat bored of RTS and FPS, personally. And Halo is not that great a shooter try halflife both 1 and 2, hell i'd take doom 3 over halo.
