Poll Will Nintendo effectively rule this gen from now on? (91 votes)

Yes 34%
No 66%

When the Switch was announced everyone called it a gimmick, it had a terrible showing with a rather odd looking Japanese fellow shaking a joycon, blowing into it, and demonstrating ice.

Now it has the highest rated games, an apparently endless onslaught of potential blockbusters and it's even embarrassed Steam by giving indie developers the respect they deserve, out-selling the other platforms and Promised third party support, true to their word.

Would it be safe to presume that Nintendo has effectively outright won this gen for the foreseeable future? Microsoft releasing Early Access AAA price Sea Of Thieves? Sony going through the motions? Another God Of War? Another Last Of Us? etc...

Doesn't seem to be much to counter them.

I expect they will come in second place this gen, unless they kill it with Pokémon Switch and hail mary this gen with the handheld/console angle... but to effectively do that they have to let the 3DS die an honourable death, quick.

They made a couple of good updates to their two most classical franchises (Mario, Zelda). That's pretty much it. Meh.

Sony on the other hand continues to push the medium with brilliant new experiences.

Only reason Nintendo is getting so much good press is because most journalists are in their mid thirties and grew up with Nintendo. Replaying, what is essentially the same games again, makes them feel nostalgic and joyful. That's fine, but it's not representative of what's going on in gaming.

Considering they came in third place in sales again last month, despite their rival's consoles being out for over 4 years ..... No.

Nope. But man they are great. Without Nintendo I would be bored console makers. Xbone/Ps4 are and will always be more of the same. You never know what Nintendo is gonna do and I love that.

Yes, that's exactly what's going on! What's more is that you continue to spew forth bile based on this assumption, as if you proved it to be true.

If by "rule this gen" you mean all the 8 year old kids that talked their parents into a Switch at Christmas, I still say no. They'll grow out of Nintendo.

No!

And this is because of Nintendo's most glaring and long established issue with their flag-ship systems.

Too many droughts between big gamereleases!

Nintendo is a great gaming company and will always be a player as long as they want to be, but until they do something about their game droughts it will be difficult for them to dominate the market especially with weaker hardware and less 3rd party support than the HD twins.

NES and SNES WERE a lot different.

Tons of games released for those systems of high quality and on a consistent basis every year.

I don't ever remember every having to wait for a year or more before the next quality game came out for those systems.

To be fair that goes for most games being released today but it seems to be a more glaring problem for Nintendo because of their lack of 3rd party support due to weaker hardware, though Switch seems to be doing a bit better in that department then N's last 2 consoles.

I don't give a damn what damage control you use here to defend these systems. It still doesn't stop the fact that the NES and SNES, like the future consoles after them, FOLLOWING with some of them having the same damage control excuses, had the same "kiddie" reception back then, which is what I was saying with Toddow's "point".

Besides, how old were you when the NES and SNES came out?

The premise of this thread is flawed because the Switch is on a different timeline. It will compete against PS4/XB1 for the first half of its life cycle and the next Sony/MS systems for the second half of its life cycle.

But at least it brought out the entertaining theory that only kids buy Nintendo systems yet somehow their success is also only due to nostalgia.

No Nintendo will probably never get back the glory years of the NES/SNES but as long as they sell they will be fine.

This is a terrific thread.

I love Switch- it's Nintendo's best offering since the Gamecube, and for once it's a platform I could solely own and be happy with- I'd miss a few games but not too many and plenty of offerings on Switch.

No they didn't. That was only on the NPD. World Wide, they came in second place. Also, Pokemon, Labo, and Smash Bros are expected to be big hits. I don't think they're slowing down anytime soon. Even after they come out, there is Mario Kart 9, Animal Crossing, Mario Bros., etc.

At least they are getting a decent selection of games together on the Switch making it a great handheld but beyond that no, they won't be ruling anything. Apart from a few great first party titles all the other stuff is better on other consoles.

That is what makes Nintendo so great. They do not have to simply be clones. My Switch is simply amazing right next to my Ps4. Last thing I need is another clone.

I was reliably informed by screeching fanboys that the WiiU with it's heaps of 5 year old X360 ports was an "8th gen system". That would make the Switch the first and only 9th gen system and thus, automatic winner of it's gen. Of course, Switch still gets many an X360 port ;)

Nintendo never HAD that mantle to begin with. Point to whatever game from the SNES library you want, it still doesn't stop the fact that, like every other Nintendo console, the SNES was received as kiddy. Even SEGA was practically riding off that sentiment in their adds.

Boy if you don't get! Hardcore male gamers have become this delusional guys...

Nintendo has set multiple trends in the industry. The home console, analog stick, handheld console, their iconic games, the Wii, and now the Switch. What trends has Microsoft and Sony set? They pretty much follow the same benchmark of "upgrade the console and try to get games for the system."

@luxuryheart: Atari set the trend for the home console, could argue the analog stick but PS1 had it first by a couple of months, Atari had the lynx first if you don't count the game'n'watch. Nintendo hasn't set as much trends as you might think. The switch would of done better as a proper console instead of a hybrid and they stuck with a handheld and console. MS set the trend for FPS and many more game types because they were only playable on DOS back in the day. Sony set the trend for using Disc over carts. The Wii was great in theory but it got old fast. If they didn't have their iconic games Nintendo would of died. What trends would you like them to set now? Everything has been done but VR and that's coming soon, who makes it Affordable and good wins.

Depends on what they do going forward. I wanna see them sell maybe 35 million switches and increase third party support. They have to make switch appealing enough that devs won't put off the release of switch iterations of games till way later.

The Atari still had that arcade like controller thingy when it first launched, not the analog stick. There 'analog' stick was big and uncomfortable. It makes sense because they came out when arcades where still all the rage in gaming. The first home console to have it was the N64. It was also the first case of comfort (now the controller was a different story...) Also, the PS1 didn't have an analog stick, just the D pad (which Nintendo invented). The PS1 added the L2 and R2 buttons though, so I do have to give Sony props for that; I can't believe I forgot that because I used to make fun of how many buttons they had, mostly out of frustration with the learning curve.

Nintendo of course had the handheld and started dominating. They even made the dual screens. Then Nintendo had motion controls, and now they have a hybrid console.

I laugh so much when I see the delusional Nintendo fans out there.

You know, Nintendo Remasterswitch is not going to dominate anything and will barely survive the jump to 4K in the early 2020.

Not embarrassing myself at all. With Nintendo you really do not know what will be coming out. Look at the hardware. Not one saw the Wii coming, or the DS, or the Switch. When Nintendo releases new hardware it really could be anything. (We always know what the next PlayStation will do cause they are all the same and I own them all) Also on software they get weird to a lot of the times. Look at Wii sports, Splatoon, Arms, and Labo. Do not even act as if you saw Labo coming (no one did).

If you do not think that Nintendo is less predicable than the other two, you have not really been playing attention.

Nintendo gets weird. Sony and Microsoft always play it safe.

Then Nintendo has made new IPs. I hate this lie being repeated. They made new IPs since the Wii alone: Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Play, Xenoblade, Splatoon, Arms, and 1 2 Switch. These are the more famous ones that aren't made by others and this doesn't include the handhelds. Now when will they get onto Microsoft for lack of exclusives or new IPs?

@luxuryheart: Analog thumbsticks first were on Amiga Saturn, and the first analog stick was on a flight arcade, the dpad was also on the microvision. the history of Nintendo during the 80/90's was what can we steal and make it better. The handheld consoles was also microvision. tho when the first dualshock came out it hard as hell to learn. my dad went from avid gamer to nothing except fighting games.

I looked up Amiga Saturn controller and didn't see it or an analog stick. Sega added an analog stick for the Sega Saturn after Nintendo released the N64 controller for 3D gaming. The Microvision did not have a D Pad. What are you on about? Nintendo also made: the idea of saving game progress, along with L and R buttons (though Sony doubled them later on).

Geez, imagine hating Nintendo so much that you'll lie about obscure technology to avoid giving credit where it's due?
