Poll Will Nintendo effectively rule this gen from now on? (91 votes)

Yes 34%
No 66%

When the Switch was announced everyone called it a gimmick, it had a terrible showing with a rather odd looking Japanese fellow shaking a joycon, blowing into it, and demonstrating ice.

Now it has the highest rated games, an apparently endless onslaught of potential blockbusters and it's even embarrassed Steam by giving indie developers the respect they deserve, out-selling the other platforms and Promised third party support, true to their word.

Would it be safe to presume that Nintendo has effectively outright won this gen for the foreseeable future? Microsoft releasing Early Access AAA price Sea Of Thieves? Sony going through the motions? Another God Of War? Another Last Of Us? etc...

Doesn't seem to be much to counter them.

I think the Switch has some good games, but 1 year in and it's clear that the Switch is primarily the system of last-gen ports and some exclusives.

You won't find many brand new 3rd-party games on the Switch because it can't run them, and Nintendo is still lightyears behind on UIs and Internet service.

And while the concept of the Switch is great, in execution it doesn't make a very good handheld.

Graphics and power, I don't think they are the most important part of a great game. But when it restricts you from playing games that are made for more modern hardware, that's still an issue.

@luxuryheart: I don't hate Nintendo the NES if my fav console of all time, ive still got a top loader with smb3 and Zelda.

A controller similar to the D-pad appeared in 1981 on a handheld game system: Cosmic Hunter on Milton Bradley's Microvision; it was operated using the thumb to manipulate the onscreen character in one of four directions.[5]

On July 5, 1996, Sega released Nights into Dreams... for their Saturn console in Japan; bundled with it was the Saturn 3D control pad which featured an analog pad intended to give the player more fluid control over that game's flight-based gameplay.
Which was release 3 weeks before n64.

I didn't lie at all. There's usually shitty versions before someone makes them great.

@npiet1: multiple examples here are very obviously wrong. Sony was definitely not the first to do disc, Sega CD for example.

Discounting the popularity of motion controls requires significant willful ignorance. Ps3 created move which they still try to use for the psvr and xbox had kinect last and this year. Not to mention the commonly used motion controls that are in ds4 controller and of course the motion controls on the switch.

First modern mainstream analog stick and rumble were both introduced by N64 also.

Not liking Nintendo games is understandable but discounting their contributions is simply wrong.

@magmadragoonx4: Okay I forgot about sega CD but you forgot about amiga cd32 but I'm not wrong about analog stick or ignorant I even sourced my info from wiki. Plus I never said anything about motion controls NES had motion controls with the power glove and it had VR it just sucked. Ive don't hate Nintendo at all, I've got all their console just nothing pass the Wii. I aint loyal to anyone just what ever I find the best. Like I said theres always someone who has done it first, then someone else makes it great.

I am as happy as the next guy that Nintendo is relevant again. But some you need to step away from the forums and go take your hand held, get in the back seat of your mom's mini van eat your bag of Cheerio's or orange slices, and play with your action figures on the way to the grocery store or soccer practice.

It's a great hand held and the go to console for parents that don't want kids playing violent video games PERIOD. You mad? go build a couch fort and grab your coloring books and be weird on your own.

@ShadowDeathX:

I see hardcore Nintendo fanboys claim this all the time. Then when I ask them to list all the supposed “amazing games” they purchased, they proceed to list 30 garbage games.

They list every single game released on switch. The Nintendo fanboy will buy every game on switch because it is a bad console and has no games. They are so desperate to play something, they lower their standards and buy everything.

You guys are not fooling anyone. The rest of us are laughing at you when you try and tell us 1,2 switch, Splatoon and a bunch of 360/PS3/Wii u ports are amazing.

Then you have the balls to hype garbage 3rd party games like Phoenix Wright, 999 And whatever niche Japanese games you list.

No one likes those games. Nintendo will always be the minority in the gaming industry. They have no say.

But that’s okay. You do you. If you enjoy spending $90 Canadian each for 30+ Switch games like 1,2 Switch, then just lol.

You nintendo fans sure do have a lot of money to burn. I have no idea how you guys plan on affording those $100 Cardboard sets but I can’t wait to lol some more.

They've ruled all gens with their games. I see no reason why they'd stop.

No, but they will dominate the uncontested handheld market, and possibly Japanese gaming since it's a natural place to make games, which could threaten much of Sony's advantage getting Japanese exclusive games by default, which is a major differentiating factor in their library versus Microsoft's.

To be fair it's still early days for the Switch. Look at shite the PS4 had in its first year. Infamous, Knack and KZSF all barging bin fodder.

What is this system? I haven't heard of it. Literal sites credit Nintendo with the gamepad and you have yet to prove them wrong. Sega released that AFTER Nintendo released the N64 controller. It was an answer to its iconic debut. Nintendo invented the analog stick for gaming and the D-pad.

You did lie. Sega released it after Nintendo and the handheld didn't have a D pad.

I actually don't think you hate Nintendo now. You're just so consumed with being right that you pull things out of your ass.

I don't get why people measure a console by its first year. They all suck in the first year as far as quantity. The best you'll get in the first year is a great launch title along with a few games.

> Sony is going through the motions by releasing new God of War and The Last of Us.

> Nintendo biggest releases this generation are Zelda and Mario, two 30 years old franchises.

Are you trolling?
