As long as their games continue to be released into tight packages, they will be the #1 company. It seems rather rare these days when a game gets universal praise like mario galaxy
F-Zero and Star Fox are largely irrelevant. Metroid is on the verge.foxhound_foxNot Metroid!!!
It is impossible for Nintendo to become irrelevent since they are one of the major fore-fathers of the modern gaming we know today. Nintendo is what made owning home console in the 80's viable.wolfbmHistorically that doesn't hold up that well. Most of the large electronic companies are young companies save a few.
Yeah they practically are since most of them have just been recycled stuff that we've seen over the past decade. Hopefully that will change with their new system...
They are already irrelevant. Bread_or_DecideOnly to you and everyone else who holds them to impossible standards.
Wii -- 90m / NSMBW -- 22m
DS -- 150m / NSMB -- 26m
It's like a soft reset of NES. Mario and Nintendo are names that are still relevant for kids today.
Why?
That question has many answers. For me, it's the consistent high quality games. I consider Wii to be the perfect realization of the term "modern Nintendo", especially the direction their franchises has taken this gen. They had abit of an identity crisis last gen, I really disliked the PS2/Xbox/GC kind of gaming, one that PS3/360 continued to evolve. Not for me.
They won't be relevant when they aren't good anymore.
BTW, anyone who thinks Metroid is dead, or in the verge of dying is delusional, Nintendo knows is a niche franchse with a small but strong fan base, Other M was a strong departure from the traditional series hence the low succes, but with HD graphics and the new controller Nintendo would be dumb to not maka a new Metroid and i'm sure we will se a new one despite what Nintendo said, maybe not as many as last gen or this gen, but we will have one.

The companies may be young. But, I'll bet a large part of their programmer workforce are veterans from the older companies.

Very true...Personally, I hope Kid Icarus becomes one of Nintendo's big franchises.
As for Nintendo franchises ever becoming irrelevant, I believe the likes of Mario and Zelda will never become irrelevant. Though I hope the likes of Donkey Kong and Metroid continue to remain relavant (hopefully we see some Metroid at E3 2012)
Nintendo franchises such as F-Zero and Pikmin need new installments already (or in the case of F-Zero, a reboot, though I personally loved F-Zero GX). Hopefully we see some of F-Zero and Pikmin at E3 too.
No clue, last time i actually was addicted to a nintendo game was during the gameboy color days when i was a kid and played pokemon non-stop, i moved on from nintendo and their in my eyes ( translation personally ) just a game company that make games for children, cant see myself playing pokemon, mario or any of the stuff they have which been on for over 20 years as TC mentioned. probably cuz i grew up more with playstation who knows but thats a whole diffrent story lol
Despite what people say on forums Nintendo reinvents their IPs without destroying their core foundation
They refuse to turn Legend of Zelda into Zelda's Creed: Oblivion Princess. But they will borrow elements (platforming from Assassin's Creed) and upgrades (RPGs) and make a nice, Nintendo-ish package.
I mean, they made Metroid friggin' Prime. Pikmin. Animal Crossing. They are always coming up with new ideas. And when they can't get their new ideas to be successful (Xenoblade, Diasaster, Endless Ocean) then they can revamp older IPs without recent installments (Donkey Kong Country, Punch Out, Fire Emblem, Excite Bike)
Fact is, they wouldn't still be relevant if they didn't still make pretty good games
[QUOTE="Bread_or_Decide"]They are already irrelevant. foxhound_foxOnly to you and everyone else who holds them to impossible standards.
(slow clap) thank you Foxhound Fox.
Thank you.
So long as people keep reproducing, there will always be little kids and so Nintendo will stay relevant :PTykainYou know whats the ironic thing? More kids play COD then they do Nintendo, and more Adults play Ninty games then kids do. So... very ironic... can it be? The mature games are kiddy and Ninty make proper games for adults?
IMO i think the nintendo franchise will never be irrelevant, i mean just look at those games like mario, mario kart, kirby, donkey kong, zelda, thses franchises at least will keep nintendo very very much alive.
Seeing how younger players don't care for Nintendo games and only nostalgia blind gamers praise every new Nintendo game like the second comming, I can see the nostalgia guys dying away with the time
ArchoNils2
Hmmm interesting. I really have a hard time following the Nintendo hate train here.
See if you talk to one guy, Nintendo is only for little kids. Then a guy like you says its nothing but a bunch of old school guys that are blinded by nostalgia. Which one is it?
And why is it that I see people of all ages enjoying Nintendo games? And being an older guy myself, I wonder about the nostalgia claim?
Sonic used to be one of my favorites back in the day. After the massive drop in quality I quit caring (though Sonic has been getting better).
I started playing Metal Gear not long after Mario. Yet after MGS4 and Portable Ops I lost interest in the series.
I've been a fan of Ninja Gaiden since the original, but everything since NGB has been heading downhill and I have little interest in NG3.
I was a fan of Castlevania since the beginning. Not too big on CV anymore.
The Final Fantasy series is home to a few of my favorite games of all time. Some of my best childhood gaming memories come from that series. Now I think the series is a steaming turd.
I could go on and on, but I'm sure you can understand what I'm saying. There are plenty of game series that I loved when I was younger that are still around, but I no longer care for them. Why doesnt nostalgia work its magic there?
I still enjoy Nintendo games because Nintendo still makes top notch games. Thats all there is to it.

To top it all off, a lot of these guys that work on these "mature" games are huge Nintendo fans. Sony Santa Monica of GoW fame? Biggest bunch of Nintendo fans you would ever meet. Kojima Productions? Directors, producers and artists all Nintendo fans. I know the character and environmental artists from the GeoW series are Nintendo fans. Hell, if I remember correctly Gabe and some of the other guys at valve are fans of Nintendo as well.
Funny that the same guys creating some of these "mature" experiences happen to enjoy Nintendos "kiddy" games.
I think they need to release 1 or 2 mature franchises, When nintendo first game around average gamer age was probably 15, now its like upper 20s.
Or they can make the metriod series darker, but please, not like other M lol.
I think nintendo internal development team is very talented, its a shame that many modern gamers dismiss mario and zelda cause they look kiddish,
I think that if they just keep adding new ideas their games will be here to stay. Look how far Mario has come.
[QUOTE="Bread_or_Decide"]They are already irrelevant. charizard1605No they're not  I think he's confusing his personal preference with irrelevance.
Nintendo is a joke. Their games are the exact same thing with minor alterations that I've been playing YEARS ago, with SMG as an exception. Zelda, boring. Mario Kart, boring. Metroid, non-existent. Starfox? 3DS? Oh boy. No new IPs in ages. You can keep supporting Nintendo, I just hope you realize you're the problem. Hope you're content with having the OoT, SS formula 20 years from now.

No? Tell me what's so different aside from implementation of motion controls? I hear there's even less exploration than previous games, and even more fetch quests. What, on a fundamental level, has been changed from what we've been playing for years now?

It's more linear for the better. All of the overworld sections feel tighter and more refined, like dungeons within themselves, and tons of new concepts are added in terms of puzzles. But go ahead and keep on blindly bashing[QUOTE="MirkoS77"][QUOTE="Shinobishyguy"] as someone who has logged in about 20 Skyward Sword, I can tell you first hand that's BSShinobishyguy

I've been tired of the Zelda series for a long time now, and becoming tired that people have become so complacent with the same thing time and time again. Zelda needs to evolve. Apparently I'm not the only one who feels this way either, so it's not just me. Keep being a Zelda fan and telling yourself it's enough. As I said, I hope you're content playing the same game 20 years from now that you are today. Think I'm joking? We'll see.
And to the person above who asked what series has fundamentally changed? Um.....Super Mario Galaxy?? That game introduced drastic changes being in space and the possibilities it afforded. Metroid Prime? Do you really need to ask?

But the fundamental aspect of it hasn't changed. MP, you're still exploring a non linear environment. SMG, you're still just jumping around.

Whatever. I don't really feel like getting into this, I'm not in the mood. As the years pass and nothing changes, people will (hopefully) come to understand what I'm saying.

The only thing I agree with is that they don't invest enough in new IPs. But then do they need to? Do you really want them to follow the trend of cinematic and realistic-looking games that's prevalent these days? Should they just try to compete with Sony and MS and make there games full of QTEs, scripted events and a movie-like presentation? I do not want that.
[QUOTE="foxhound_fox"]F-Zero and Star Fox are largely irrelevant. Pokemon? Kirby? Donkey Kong? Super Smash Bros? I would add the traditional Donkey Kong to that list.

What the hell are you talking about?? If you can't see the difference gravity drastically affected the gameplay in Mario Galaxy as opposed to its predecessor you're just blind or not wanting to see it, no offense. It took platforming to an entirely different level.
