The Wii has outsold both the 360 and PS3 with sales topping 70 million units worldwide. Does this proove that Nintendo is king of the console realm? If not, how is the Wii so popular?

King of hardware sales maybe. They are already laughing... I don't think they care if they have the last one or not.
It'll be a nervous laughter while they watch out for what Apple has in store for them on the handheld front and maybe if Dance Central / Kinect will lessen their popular some.
3DS is in no way threatened by iPhone. iPhone is a phone first, a PMP second, a PDA third, and a gaming console fifth or fourth at best. It has no buttons, it has no first party support, it has no physical media, and is has very sparse third party support from major publishers. That, and most of the time popular iPhone games get ported to other systems anyway (Angry Birds, etc). Nintendo 3DS is, I believe, designed specifically to show what is possible on a dedicated gaming handheld. It has a d-pad, it has buttons, it has a stereoscopic 3D screen, it has great battery life, it has an analog stick, it's fully backwards compatible with DS software, it has tilt/accelerometers/gyro, it has a 3D camera, it has a microphone, and it has a touch screen. iPhone has a 2D camera, a touch screen, a mic, and an accelerometer, sure. But it still doesn't offer a complete gaming experience like 3DS will. Further, we're seeing more support for 3DS than we ever have for a console that doesn't even have a price or release date yet. We already know it's getting Dead or Alive, Sonic, Animal Crossing, Assassin's Creed, Kid Icarus, Metal Gear Solid, Saints Row, BloodRayne, A Boy and His Blob, Bomberman, Contra, Chocobo Racing, Dragon Ball, DJ Hero, Driver, Dynasty Warriors, FIFA, Etrian Odyssey, Harvest Moon, Frogger, Kingdom Hearts, Zelda, Madden, Mario Kart, Ninja Gaiden, Nintendogs, Street Fighter, Paper Mario, Pilotwings, Professor Layton, Pro Evolution, 3 Shin Megami Tensei titles, Samurai Warriors, Sims 3, Ridge Racer, Super Monkey Ball, Steel Diver, Star Fox, Ghost Recon, and Splinter Cell among others. That's an insane lineup, and while iPhone may have a few games from a few of those franchises, the vast majority of them are stripped down significantly. It'll be a nervous laughter while they watch out for what Apple has in store for them on the handheld front and maybe if Dance Central / Kinect will lessen their popular some.

They created a platform and software for people that don't usually like or play video games, there's more of them than us so its a lot more popular. Its certainly not its games that make it lead the sales.
These people don't buy the Wii for Zelda or Metroid, they never did before those are for the already initiated gamer. They buy it for Wii Fit/Sports and Just Dance. Mario crosses all divisions, he's like the pope or Mickey Mouse.
They have been laughing ever since they lauched the Wii..and DS...and 3DS wehn it comes..
They will keep laughing for years to come.

Since kinect basically doesn't work, I kinda doubt it.
No because as both Nintendo and Sony proved in the past. No one stays at the top in this industry for long.
Shadow2k6
Not forever, no. Though Sony stood on top of the industry for about a decade and Nintendo stood on top for about a decade before them.

2 gens is a pretty long time though. That's a decade.
PS2 won last gen by far.Well considering the combination of the DS and Wii sales I think they have been laughing for sometime. If Nintendo cared a great deal about directly competing with Sony and Microsoft, they could very well laugh last, but since they created a different platform, and went for a different audience, I don't think it applies.
For better or worse, Nintendo has struck a separate path, and if they laugh about anything, it's about being able to bring in a new audience first, before Sony and Microsoft tried it (speaking of casual, motion-control gaming).
i think nintendo needs a "next gen" console to really have the last laugh. i mean wii is cool, but time for an upgrade or a whole new start-from-scratch consolebrown_flameDo u not realize that all consoles are just trying to be a PC, and atleast Wii tried to take a step in gaming(motion controls) and even the other console makes see that because they about to realease their own. If anything, nintendo should be praised for being a great dev and innovator in the gaming world, not trashed on because they didnt make a wateredown pc console(xbox/ps)

I would still be just playing online PC games if it wasn't for the Wii. And now the 3DS beckons with more innovation.
If the next Nintendo console offers PC quality visuals and a control scheme that is as natural as KBM, with support from Valve then I might give up PC gaming for good. :-)
