Dunno if its perceived as a crime but i have never played it or FF9 lol
Neither have I.
I've never beat the game, but loved the first disc (PS1). I think it deserves every bit of praise it gets.
Those that are wondering, I keep getting stuck at the start of the second disc where you are on the world map for the first time. Where the hell are you supposed to go?
There was some snowy village you had to go to I think. The place you were at at the end of disc 1 was supposed to lead you there.
I do not really remember specifics.
Its one of the most overrated games of all time, and in the end, the game was a pact with the devil. It resulted in short term JRPG success while in the long term, hurting it.
And really, the only revolutionary thing about the game was the graphics and technology...it was FFVI that changed the series.
SE has already determined themselves it's an overrated game. FFX get top priority apparently looking at Vita and PS3 HD versions.
Is that why they made a bunch of sequels and spin offs to seven? Why they milked the series to death? Or why they even made Lightning to be a female version of Cloud (Nomura's words) ?
No, SE keeps thinking that FF7 is a perfect 10 and thats the entire reason why they milked the series to death.
For starters FF7 is not overrated, nor is it the best FF (that goes to FF6). If you want to talk about actually FF games being overrated then by all means talk about FFX, the most overrated pos FF game ever created.
The game itself is overrated, FF6 was a better game.
The legacy it left on the industry, however, is not.
I thought it was crap back then, but I've always understood why it's so loved. Honestly, it reminds me a lot of Halo in the sense that it's a good game that does a lot of little things right, but more importantly, it came out in the right place and at the right time. So many people bought a ps1 and got into rpgs because of FFVII, and there's no denying that.
It's severely underrated. No one who has played all the FF games would say FFVII is the best but many, myself included, would say that it's their favorite.
@silversix_: No worse of a crime than never having played a single entry in the series.
I just bought FF6 to pop that cherry.
FFVI...such a great game.
FF7 is bogged down by over-ambitious mini-games and overdrawn animations. Still a great game but FF9 was much better.
FF7 is the best in the series. Even Square Enix says so.
"According to Andrisang, CEO Yoichi Wada explained during the company's annual shareholder meeting that it would not remake the legendary RPG until it makes a brand new Final Fantasy game that "exceeds the quality" of Final Fantasy 7"

You're making this topic now in 2014? Where were you a decade ago when gaming forums were always flooded with "FFVII is so overrated" topics?
Anyway, to answer your question: No, FFVII was not overrated for its time. If anything, FFVII seems to suffer from the "Seinfeld is Unfunny" syndrome:
"There are certain shows that you can safely assume most people have seen. These shows were considered fantastic when they first aired. Now, however, these shows have a Hype Backlash curse on them. Whenever we watch them, we'll cry, "That is so old" or "That is so overdone".
The sad irony? It wasn't old or overdone when they did it. But the things it created were so brilliant and popular, they became woven into the fabric of that show's genre. They ended up being taken for granted, copied and endlessly repeated. Although they often began by saying something new, they in turn became the status quo.
Named after the sitcom Seinfeld, which many people won't watch anymore because everything about it has been copied. Most likely will result in Fan Haters and accusations of Rule Abiding Rebels. This can also occur in countries that get the shows years after they originally come out."
Along with FFVII and Seinfeld, the same could also be said for Ocarina of Time, Star Wars, The Beatles, Citizen Kane, Shakespeare, etc. Works like these left such a huge lasting impact on their respective media/genres that it's now difficult to see what was so good about them in the first place, without understanding the context of what their media/genres were like before they came along.
I've been saying that on Gamespot for close to a decade now.
Still trying to find the image of the story from FFVI being "rewritten" to FFVII.
That was a golden image.
SE has already determined themselves it's an overrated game. FFX get top priority apparently looking at Vita and PS3 HD versions.
That probably has more to do with the fact that FFX would be a much easier game to remake. It not having blocky graphics and all.

Not hard at all. Modders already did it over a decade ago when the PC version first came out.
How is the biggest selling Final Fantasy game Overrated. It's the only one in it's series to pull in non RPG gamers, and since has never been able to really grip it's audience.
I hate this genre really and I'm not very focused but what Final Fantasy 7 did for me and probably many other gamers who aren't into the series or genre was it broadened it's approach giving me a really good immersive story and variety within the game, and for it worked and kept me playing till the very end, i tried playing FF8 and hated it, and i tried playing a few of the others but non of them caught me like FF7 did, and think thats what it was like for many gamers esp back then.
How is FF7 over rated it put jrpgs on the map and sold 9.72 million units. Also when the ff7 ps3 tech demo came out people lost their minds. Even now people talk about a ff7 remake. I for one would love to see a knights of the round summon in 1080p.
I'm not saying it's a bad game, in fact it's a great game, but it's not even the best Final Fantasy game, let alone the best game ever.
Sweenix
Out.
You have an opinion. Well good for you.
I've never beat the game, but loved the first disc (PS1). I think it deserves every bit of praise it gets.
Those that are wondering, I keep getting stuck at the start of the second disc where you are on the world map for the first time. Where the hell are you supposed to go?
Small town to the north east.
I wouldn't call it the greatest game/RPG in the history of gaming but there's an obvious reason as to why it was highly regarded.
Its brought RPG to America along with being a technical masterpiece at the time (we went from a small cartridge game to 3x disc with the first glimpse of true open 3D).
Its legacy and importance is why its considered one of the top 25 games ever made (bringing a large genre to the states and becoming the first big 3D game is a landmark achievement).
I guarantee you that 90+ percent of the people who bought the game in 1997 will tell you its one of there top 10 favorite games of all time.
I used to be on that bandwagon till I played the game in 2010 and it blew me away. Easily one of the best games I have played in my life even though I already knew most of the story before playing it. FF7 it's just so dark and interesting that is hard to resist. Not to mention the music it's super unique too. The game's a masterpiece really and I'm the type of guy that tends to hate on popular things.
The materia system, the ecological themes, love triangle, the super hard bosses, the side-quests (in particular the gold chocobo one, very long but very rewarding and even then you'll still have a hard time beating Ruby) this game is so fucking good. The industrial art gives it a very believable touch too... You can easily get lost in this world like in no other JRPG that I have ever played.
lol
Grandia is better. Seriously. Also for the later RPGs, everyone missed out on Breath of Fire IV, which was also more fun than the FF games around its time. I'm not saying FF is bad, but these games are more fun to play.
People have been making that claim for nearly two decades, what do you want? If it's for everyone to agree then forget it. And if you're just now playing it I'd like to remind you that while it still stands up pretty well today that it's still a nearly twenty year old game.
If you're going to talk about a game being over rated at least pick one that people still pretty frequently tumpet on about... Like Uncharted 2, dear lord is that game over rated. But I haven't heard anyone go on about how great Final Fantasy VII was since I was in high school right before Advent Children came out and anime and japanese games were dominating the gaming scene
SE has already determined themselves it's an overrated game. FFX get top priority apparently looking at Vita and PS3 HD versions.
Or it could just be because they don't have to rebuild Final Fantasy X from the ground up for it's HD version. Doing a straight HD port of VII makes about as much sense as doing as straight HD conversion of a highly compressed .jpeg image.
Doing a remake of Final Fantasy VII would be a daunting task. They'd have to change so much and there are so many ways they could screw it up it's not even funny. In terms of expense it'd be like creating an entirely new game with the only reusable assets maybe being concept art and the script which would still probably have to probably be partially rewritten and new content added
