No way. A successful consoles life is pretty much 5 years, give or take. NES = 1987-1992. SNES = 1992-1997. N64 = 1997-2002. PS1 = 1997-2002. PS2 = 2002-2007. etc. So the PS3 has to sell about 94 million in the next 4 years to match the PS1 and PS2 success. :o

clearly that's my theory of what could happen. i didn't state it as a fact (hence the I don't think). but at it's current rate that's how things look. you might think differently but i'd like to see what you base it on.
From a manufacturing standpoint, it's certainly possible. The original PlayStation lasted from 1995 to 2006, plus the PlayStation 2 is still going strong in its seventh year. But a console's life span is only as good as its third party support. Sony will need to start raking in developers who are willing to keep the machine going for years to come, otherwise there will be no incentive to pick one up. That was the main problem with the Xbox and GameCube... they ran out of steam in favor of the newer generation..

Has anyone officially ever said this? I reckon as technology moves so fast these days a console's lifespan is probably 5-7 years maximum. If your rival brings out a new console well before you they would have a huge march on number developers etc, especially if it was completely backwards compatible which I'm sure future consoles will be.
I wouldn't mind spending $400 every 5 years if there was a big enough leap in technology to warrant it, particularly if the periphierals are compatible - thats a huge difference if you're buying 3 or 4 new controllers each gen!
i'd say that its very possible... the predecessor has been out for 7 years now, and are still coming out with some must have titles. also, if you take into account what more the ps3 can do than its predecessor (comparing to the original ps2) - working web browser, stream content from your pc such as pics, clips, and music, psp remote functionality, built in ethernet and wireless, built in hDD, blu-ray player (which will become more and more desired as time passes), its almost a definite

ps2 actually sold well. in fact it's sales in the first 6 months in japan are only slightly lower than ps3's worldwide sales for it's first 6 months.
Think Long Term, when all consoles have had there price drops and casuals and fence sitters are in the fray.
2-3 years from now.
in 2 -3 years the war will be decided. devs aren't going to waste 2-3 years on a console that's more expensive to develop for and has less sales. we're seeing them already declare that. if it takes 2-3 years for the ps3 to drop to around $200 then the wii will have been at 150 for over a year and cleaning up. don't think that only the ps3 can price drop. it's got a much longer way to go with that than either of it's rivals. and it'll be losing support all along the way too.

yeah i sold good because there wasn't competition. as soon as the ps2 came out in the US sales tanked. that seemed like a good indicator or things to come don't you think?

I'm not discrediting that fact because of course the PS3 will still be around...it's been that way every generation but it won't be a main contender anymore just like the ps2 isn't now nor is the xbox or gc.
This generation is going to be no different than past generations (I mean that in terms of trends and lifespans not sales)
The PS3 could actually last longer than 10 years because of the way they are able to update so much just by a firmware update.
The Blue-Ray is getting stronger just about every week now. The game developers are now wanting to start using the extra space on the Blue-Ray disc. This will make the Blue-Ray a standard in due time. The Blue-Tooth will in time become another standard because there are more and more devises begining to use this technology.
