What do you think is the balancing point for these systems? Look at how the population took to the expensive and powerful PS Vita for instance. Don't think companies won't notice things like that.

Can they really expect to do well with powerful systems that cost upwards of $400 - $500?

Look at the economy, the lack of jobs, the wages that aren't going up with the price of inflation. Look at how successful Kinect has become for Microsoft. Look at how successful the Wii was earlier in the generation. Look at the success of the weaker 3DS handheld.

It's looking like once again Nintendo, with a preemptive strike of the Wii U, will secure another easy victory by finding the sweet spot between power and price like they did with the 3DS.

How do you guys think Sony and Microsoft will handle things next generation?

I'm assuming they'll be semi powerful with a lighter price tag than last gen.

Pretty much this. They can't release a console at $500 and expect it to sell like hotcakes. Nintendo's gonna sell the Wii U at $350(If rumors are true), the MAX I think MS and Sony should go is $400....

Can they make systems @ no more than $400 AND be vastly superior in power than Wii U? Methinks not. I also don't think any console will sell well if it's a dime over $400.

well, I think the 360 is a good indicator of how MS can deliver for it's time, state of the art console VG tech, at launch, sell at a loss whilst making bank on Software & XBL fees and eventually sell the HW at a profit.

We'll just need to wait and see what the next gen strategy from the Big three is I guess - E3 could shed some light. :o :D

Light and cheap, because going more powerful will drive development costs and that may cause higer prices in games and hardware.

Of course they can, it's called 'taking a loss'.

The 360's gpu alone was worth several hundred $ for the consumer equivalent

The consoles have to be expensive and power full as long as developers and publishers want to continue with releasing multiplat on pc.
It's important to realize that the lifespan of a console is quite long, developing a console that isn't on par with the pc at start will be horribly behind in a few years. To only exception to that is releasing a console with gimmicks in order to target a different audience, however competing with 2 others in a market like that is a waste of time and money. Considering that I believe that there will be at least 1 console going all powerfull and heavy prized.

Microsoft had a whole different plan back then before the Kinect era. That's like saying Sony will pull another $599 again. Nobody is gonna pull that boner again.

One thing is sure, they'll not be just for gaming considering the popularity of Netflix on 360. I wouldn't be surprised if the next xbox runs windows RT, the same windows that will run on tablets and windows phone 8.

Better start telling all Lemmings & Cows about it. The only next gen console that's guaranteed to recieve a PS2 to PS3 jump in power & graphics is the Wii U.

Microsoft & Sony are only going to try to either match or just go slightly above the Wii U in power & graphics. That means that PS4 & Xbox 720 won't recieve another huge PS2 to PS3 jump like 360, PS3, & Wii U would.

Microsoft and Sony can't continue just being dumbed down PCs, it doesn't work. Sony definitely cannot take a hit on the PS4 and Microsoft probably won't be willing to do so as well.

I'm expecting them all to be slightly above what we have this generation, with PC having a lead from the beginning.

There's a very real possibility that the Wii U could get left in this gen with the 360/PS3 as far a 3rd-party support goes. Not expecting much more than a juiced-up 360 in terms of power.

you need to remember that Nintendo always sells at a profit while MS and Sony does not. If anything the Wii U will be vastly underpowered compared to next gen consoles. I mean, didn't we learn already with the Wii and 3DS? Are these 2 vastly more powerful than the first Xbox and PsP? No.

Wii U will not be much more powerful than current gen consoles, mark my words. Even the Zelda tech demo was locked at 30 frames with 720p. And not to mention that the controller itself will be pretty expensive.

Highly doubt that will happen this time. 3rd party developers can't afford to ignore the Wii U like most of them did with Wii. Plus neither PS4 or Xbox 720 are guaranteed to recieve another PS2 to PS3 graphics & power leap like with PS2 to PS3 & Xbox to Xbox 360.

I'm expecting much less of a leap in power compared to the last gen - current gen leap. Sony certainly wont repeat the ps3 price mistake, and MS seems to want to copy the Wii's success

Xbox 720 is already confirmed to be a huge monster with 16 cores and some super powerfull GPU array

Also it is supposed to be made to last 10+ years, which means it will have many slim revisions from the initial huge box it will come in

I expect a 500-600$ at launch, with 2 SKUs

That depends on how long MS/Sony wait to release new consoles. I mean they may want to wait long enough so that they can make a significant leap while still being affordable. Releasing consoles that are too close to todays standard is also dangerous. They should be able to stand the Mom test as Cliff puts it.

Nothing has been confirmed, but we can guess that soccer moms wont want to spend 600 bucks on a kinect box.

The nextbox will be very low powered indeed.

2 SKUs I agree. 16 cores is a rumor, super powerful GPU is also rumor. $500-$600 cannot be the initial price for the SKUs it's too much in today's casual cheap market.

Nextbox will be a beast, and cost $499, taking a loss of $100-$200 each

It will have Blu-Ray to keep piracy down, and use DX11

Expecting full HD @ 30 frames (60fps for some games, 30fps for cinematic games)

Built-in Kinect that works at closer range and can detect fingers, and less laggy.

PS4 will be slightly less beast, costing $499 and taking maybe a $50-$100 loss

Will use DirectX (maybe 9 but probably 11)

Full HD @ 30 frames will be the standard, along with 3DTV output

Bluray for anti-pi

WiiU will be around the same as PS3 for performance and sell for $399

Will use BluRay for anti-pi

Most likely will use openGL

They will start to focus more in online gaming.

For one of the 3 companies, next gen will be their last as a console manufacturer.

I don't think console power matters anymore. They have to do something else to entice buyers. If I want a powerful machine, why would I play on consoles to begin with? A PC is a wiser investment, especially for a technology freak like me - It's a computer, gaming machine and a multimedia machine. It does everything a console does and it does it better.

There's a reason why I'm interested in the Wii U. Nintendo's attempting to do something different the console, and I much like the approach Nintendo has been taking since the DS. I'll wait a year to see if there are any games that use the controller to my liking, then I'll budge.Having a differentiation factor is essential to stand out.Right now, the PS3 and 360 don't stand out from what else is on market. It took half the generation for Microsoft to stand out with Kinect and Sony has no more 'we're a blu-ray player' advantage, it's everywhere now.

If Microsoft and Sony just do console power, count me out for those two. I've been more than willing to buy their consoles in the past (PS1, PS2, Xbox360) - but they're going to have to do something different to attract me. Nintendo does that pretty well, if Sony and Microsoft do something smart that I like, I'll be on board.

I wouldn't count on that happening. Microsoft is going to go for profit this time around. That means no more using cutting edge tech.

Built-in Kinect that works at closer range and can detect fingers, and less laggy.Shinobi120

I wouldn't count on that happening. Microsoft is going to go for profit this time around. That means no more using cutting edge tech.

The only cutting edge tech MS used this generation is Kinect. I'm going with a Blu-Ray player add-on next gen...

Sony will go the PS2 route, modest hardware and lots of core games.

MS is on their own this gen, no one to copy off of, Nintendo and Sony likely doing the exact opposite of MS, so it will be interesting to see MS try and go through a gen by themselves for once.

I don't really want a next gen yet, 360 might be maxed out but PS3 still has plenty of power left. And like you said in this economy I doubt many people would be willing to drop a bunch of money on a new system, hopefully Sony doesn't do the 600 bones route again, even though the 360 ended up costing the same amount of money (WIFI adapter, XBL fees ect...).

But we know nothing about next gen systems, so this is all pointless.

Even if PS3 isn't maxed out, the Wii U will already beat the PS3 in power & graphics.

too bad there have been developers who have said the exact opposite.

Yeah, anonymous devs. I rather listen to actual developers.

Can they make systems @ no more than $400 AND be vastly superior in power than Wii U? Methinks not. I also don't think any console will sell well if it's a dime over $400.

Inconsistancy

Of course they can, it's called 'taking a loss'.

The 360's gpu alone was worth several hundred $ for the consumer equivalent

Exactky, the X1900 XT was $500, yet Microsoft was paying $145 for the 360 GPU at launch. By now it's probably down to $30
