Will PS4 be blown away this holiday without a 349 drop?

I think so.

But personally I think Sony is precisely planning to do just that this winter at the next PSX event. They are obviously planning on delivering some big info and they are avoiding the gamescon event all together to hold something to their chest for this even in October. It would be a genius move and a perfect timeline and platform to launch such an announcement.

Let's be honest here, PS4 has no big retail heavy hitters to derail a game like Halo 5 this holiday. To make matters worse MS will also probably continue their 349 bargain deal with the console plus game and at $400 PS4 won't be looking too pretty to impulse buyers who want to get a gift for this kids this holiday.

So what do you think? Do you think PS4 needs a $349 price reduction this holiday to not get slaughtered by xbox 1 in sales? Do you think, as I do, Sony will infact announce a WW $349 price reduction at the PSX event in October?

Sony could use more games, that might help.

So you don't think Sony could handle the hit of a price reduction without a complete redesign?

No, just a die shrink.

The chipset is currently 32nm I think? They could just shrink it to 22nm and keep the same case. They've done this with the Ps2 and Ps3 before introducing the slim. Every one of these companies does it.

But yeah, Sony can't afford to take any hit with hardware anymore.

lol, and MS could use more games to not get slaughtered by Sony for 7/8 of the year, that might help them. That said, this is a focused topic and both Sony and MS have games they are just not on the same schedule so your comment is not even relevant

FYI Sony has more games for PS4 than xbox one as it is, just not any big one to derail something like Halo 5 this holiday.

No real need, Halo will boost the Xbone, but PS4 will still be strong. For gamers sake I hope they do something at E3, but I don't think they will.

Sony had the GTA V/Last of Us bundle.

They could very well have a Star Wars/Battlefront bundle this holiday since that deal has marketing arrangements with Sony.

The fact that MS has to continue these bundles/discounts just to stay competitive shows their console is in trouble. It seems the current prices are not really enough for MS to gain market share, but if/when Sony slashed their price it would be even more one sided. Right now it seems Sony is enjoying raking in a little more profit per unit sold (which makes sense considering they importance any profits are from Playstation to them now).

They can still attend Gamescom (and make some announcements around that time). All they said is that that there won't be a press conference this time.

They are holding a presser at Paris Games Week in October - (it isn't PSX). The convention has been going on for 5 years and has gotten bigger each year. All eyes are going to be on Sony and David Cage's forehead.

They will drop at least $50 officially and that will be at Paris Games Week (or sooner). I'm sure they are expecting Microsoft to be $299 soon , and combine that with their lofty hardware sales expectations for their next fiscal ........ and boom , there it is.

Remasters might be in Sony's pocket this holiday along with some heavily marketed multiplats. They already have God of War 3 confirmed. An Uncharted remaster on top of that would do it. Especially if it's bundled.

Why would it? Unless X1 is lowered even more, X1 was already 349 last year.

I don't think its complacent so much as desperate. The Playstation division is one of their only majorly profitable divisions at the moment. They need that money to keep their head above the water.

All they need is a couple of decently priced Bundles and PS4 would still enjoy great sales during the holiday season.

Also I don't understand why Sony should be so worried about Halo5.. Most probably a large number of Halo fans have already bought the Xbox One... Halo 5 is not enough to change the current situation, but will surely give a decent boost in sales for a couple of months..

Considering a large demographic of the PlayStation 4 user base are previous Xbox users and obviously a large chunk of them were probably Halo players who love the franchise, I'd say that's a good reason to be worried, especially considering Sony has nothing to counter Halo 5.

However do not underestimate that a huge amount of Halo fans are avid Xbox fans, who probably got an X1 at launch or later.. I am not saying Halo5 won't boost sales but don't expect it to convince 8-12 million gamers into buying the X1..

Also if we go by your logic regarding demographics on user base, those same Xbox fans who shifted to PS4, were probably previously PS2 fans.. but here both of us are just assuming..

My idea here is that Halo 5 can boost sales temporarily but not a game changer when seeing the whole picture...

I think they could hold $400 and still do just as well as last holiday season. The machine is still selling like crazy and I don't think Halo has the same pull as it did when Halo 3 launched. It'll move some X1's but I don't think it's going to take too many sales from the PS4.

At the rate it's selling there is 0 reason for a price drop. Thats like a drug dealer selling it cheaper because his product is in high demand. The xbox one can't even match it at $50 cheaper including games.

As long as it keeps selling the way it is what would be the point of a price cut? The company is broke after all.

No, XB1 is getting worked over so badly right now that it wouldn't matter what happens this fall. Besides, Uncharted 4 is set for early 2016, and I'm sure Sony will have more announcements at E3.

PS4 is beating XB1 badly even with the price drop. XB1 is going to have to drop to $299 if they want to destroy PS4 this Christmas. Besides, I don't think Halo can save Xbox anymore, especially the way MCC was so broken last year.

Great for current "owners" of PS4 who were previously only PC/360 guys last gen who didn't have PS3, not so much for PS3 fans from last gen or people looking for reasons to buy a new system.

Old remasters aren't going to provoke people to buy current systems at this stage of the game, they are only good for current owners who never played those games last gen so those won't help the holiday to push PS4 consoles.

yeah xbone has had a lot of "tipping points" so far, mcc bundle, titanfall bundle, bla bla bundle, still getting destroyed, halo 5 won't change that, all lems on this board said the same when mcc was going to be released.

It's pretty obvious there's going to be a price cut this year, right? There appears to be a YoY slow-down in NPD at least. Not sure about other world markets. The scale of production on these things must certainly give them wiggle room for the manufactured unit price at this point. The market conditions are right for a price drop. Be it at E3 or later this year in time for the holidays.

If Sony is taking the US market seriously (and every indication seems to point to this being the case), they will know that MS might dip to $300 with Halo 5 for maximum impact these holidays. In truth, it may be quite advantageous for them to introduce a Slim PS4 around the holidays at $350 while selling through stock of the "fat" PS4 at $299 or $319. It would rain on the XBoxes parade maximum strength if they pull it off and market it. It stands to reason that a certain amount of current "fat" owners would upgrade to a slim model and also put cheap used units into circulation. This always has the grand effect of boosting software sales cyclically.

2015 may end up disastrous for the XBone. Like clockwork, their big lineup is front-loaded for the holidays this year and Sony could clock them. The opportunity is there.

There isn't going to be any price cut or revision any time soon. Revision will come once the PS4's APU is manufactured at 14nm instead of the current 28nm. This will happen next year so a revision will be released in the second half of 2016.

And people asking for a price cut are silly. The demand for PS4 is still super high. It would foolish to take a cut in profits or increase costs. And it doesn't matter if demand drops a little bit, it is still super high.

Wasn't the Xbone already $350 last Christmas with the AC bundle? I don't see it being a factor, since Sony will likely do a price drop bundle come holidays too.

As much as I wish it, Sony has nothing to fear from anybody. They won the media and public perception wars. Sony only needs to lower the price when the sales start falling, and that is looking unlikely anytime soon. I'm thinking that a price drop will happen next summer. And even then it might be unlikely. The X1 will have to do a miracle comeback to force Sony to do this.

@playharderfool: The PS4 is already selling rapidly at current prices even though it has next to no games worth a damn. Why bother price dropping it?
