They kept on whining about losing $ on every unit sold like a little *bleep* with the PS3. Why even go custom made when the cell is NO more powerful than your average PC today infact it's alot worse. The PS3 cant even play Crysis and you'd think it would be able to as much as Sony hyped "THE CELL":lol:Michael324
The cell is actually pretty powerful, but all the other parts bottleneck it.
And every console this gen has a custom GPU.
Maybe next gen Sony should post their specs to the PC Hardware discussion before building a bottlenecked rig. :P

This
The Cell is substantially more powerful than most PCs...The reason it "can't even play Crysis" as you so elegantly put it, is because it has a pathetic amount of RAM and a Mediocre GPU.kieranb2000
Well, not exactly.
The cell is better than most Intel/AMD cpus in certain situations because it was designed specifically for those functions.
Intel/AMD Cpus are better for general use.
but yeah, it is bottlenecked.
The PS3 doesn't have a custom GPU (at least in the way you claim). Its an underclocked 7800s.loco145
If anything the 360 has the more unique GPU, it just happens to also be more powerful and just as easy to code for (thanks to DirectX libraries).
Well seeing that the RSX is made by Nividia...
I think they will rework their architecture. They had dedicated video ram and dedicated CPU ram, which ended up as a massive bottlneck. The RSX was also thrown in last minute, it wasn't really built along side of the Cell. Overal the system is very inefficent. The next one will be much better.

The GPU is simply a 7800 GTX 512mb with 256mb, so its hardly custom made:?-Pred-Alien-
It's not exactly the same, and it's actually a bit weaker.

it's gotta 128-bit databus instead of 256-bit. now that IS a bottleneck.[QUOTE="-Pred-Alien-"]The GPU is simply a 7800 GTX 512mb with 256mb, so its hardly custom made:?swazidoughman

Its actually like a 7800gs underclocked a bit. It was a last minute thing thrown in when they realized the cell processor that they were forced to use becuase of the cost was actually not powerful enough to handle both CPU calculations and graphic calculations. Cell processors in other computers (ones that haven't been stripped down) can actually handle both quite nicely.Well seeing that the RSX is made by Nividia...

And the fact that it was hyped to be a little bit MORE powerful than the GTX 256mb pretty much seals the deal. The PS3 doesn't have a custom GPU (at least in the way you claim). Nah, that rumor is false, I'll have to dig it up, but sony wants to be able to make money so the ps4 is going to be more of an incremental upgraded ps3, with a beefed up version of the cell and some other new things. But they don't want to have to rewrite the all the debugging tools for it and what not, so devs will be happy to make games for them.they've rumored to possibly have the larrabee on the ps4. that would be awesome if its true
z4twenny
Edit: http://www.videogamer.com/news/sony_ps4_talk_is_rumour.html this is also a rumor, but far more likely, i think the ps3 lack of success made sony a bit more humble.

it's gotta 128-bit databus instead of 256-bit. now that IS a bottleneck. that right there is ps3's worst nightmare, good point, same goes for 360 too but not as much due to edo ram on the gpu.The PS3 doesn't have a custom GPU (at least in the way you claim). Its an underclocked 7800s.loco145
The RSX, despite similarities to the higher end geforce 7000 series, is a custom GPU.
Also, many of your posts are filled with fanboyism. Watch what you say.
All three consoles have a PC company brand GPU, modified versions of PC GPU architecture like the G70.
It paints a picture of just how reliant on PC progress consoles are, if there was no PC gaming there wouldn't be a driving force to R&D new gaming orientated GPUs between console releases.
next consoles better have 4gigs of memory and at least 256 bit memory on the gpu.
i kind of knew way before 360 and ps3 were released that 512 mb of memory and 128bit gpu memory wasnt going to be good enough for HD.

Agreed.
However I think all platforms are a blast this gen.
With the amount of speculation going on in this thread regarding RSX; I figured before logging for the night that posting this would be useful.
Figures are taken from Wiki, RSX is essentially an overclocked 7800GTX with a smaller die and half the bus.

Thank you for posting those numbers. Much appreciated.
It still impresses me with how well it works with the rest of the PS3's specs.

rsx's architecture is based on 7800 gtx pc architecture 360 gpu is not based on any gpu on pc lolWith the amount of speculation going on in this thread regarding RSX; I figured before logging for the night that posting this would be useful.

pixel fill rate on the RSX is the lowest due to 128bit memory bus, Sony made a big mistake there. With the amount of speculation going on in this thread regarding RSX; I figured before logging for the night that posting this would be useful.

but its not though, just because yo uhave those numbers doesn't mean anything of the internal hardware, it just means the RSX is comparable performance to the 7800gtx, but take into account that it does have customs parts to it, interface with ps3s flex io bus and some other stuff, its still custom. also its a wiki and i could go on there in change it, I've read the ps3 has 2 vertex pipelines which is really small for a GPU but thats because sony new the cell would be able to do that part.[QUOTE="loco145"]The PS3 doesn't have a custom GPU (at least in the way you claim). Of course the Ps3 doesn't have a 7800s installed inside, but out of the 3 is the least custom GPU. That what i mean. (In the way that the OP was saying, the Ps3 is not custom). :roll:The developers don't have problems with the RSX, but with the cell.

No, it's called overclocking.

No, it's called overclocking.
Not really, overclocking simply involves pushing the same exact hardware. The GeForce 8 and 9 and even the current GTX 2xx series are all based off the same core, the difference is nVidia have found better ways of producing them and as a result at a lowered cost were able to increase their overall output. If you tweak a graphics card to get more out of it then it is now a custom card. No its called toying with an initial core, not customisation. You are tweaking it to meet your personal needs, how is that not customization?[QUOTE="Trmpt"][QUOTE="-Pred-Alien-"]I know, i changed the wheels on my cars, its so Pimp My Ride material:roll:-Pred-Alien-
