Considering Bioware (can they even make a bad game?) is at the same level if not better then Blizzard, this game has a credible shot at being something very special. It may be even so good that it steals away subscribers from WoW.

This thread is useless.

How can we predict it? And no....WoW will still have a huge userbase regardles of how well SW does.

If it has low system requirements like WoW and is accessible enough for new players, I could see it replacing WoW. While Warcraft is a huge gaming franchise, it looks small under the Star Wars brand.

An MMO doesn't get killed. It eventually implodes.

Bioware has the most chops so far. But I subscribe to the theory that WoW will have to trip over its own feet before any game will kill it.

Well according to VGchartz the original WoW sold 12m copies, BC at 6.5m and WotLK sold 5.25m. At least you can compare them relatively and as you can see WoW is dying in that sense, they probably still rake in the money with all these new payment features.

WoW is definitely getting less and less people for every new expansion, I seriously doubt Cataclysm is going to change the direction in which it is heading towards atm.

Star Wars MMO, maybe not as hot sounding as Pokemon MMO, but yeah it's still cool.

Lets see how it all plays out.

I think it'll carve out a nice little foothold for itself. And if a few more games do that, then maybe WoW will "die."

Think about the fanbase of WoW. How many of those casuals do you think actually knows SW:TOR exists? And, of those that do how many would feel alienated by the Star Wars franchise? Not everyone is a fan

I assume if all goes well all TOR will do is add to the population of MMO gamers out there. It won't take (m)any from WoW, nor will it take (m)any from all those niche Korean MMOs. It'll just be it's own seperate thing I'm sure.

treedoor

The number of people who like Star Wars is most likely larger than the number of people who even know what Warcraft is outside of WoW.

The SW license will actually do something meaningful for TOR.

I'm sure it is, but that doesn't translate to it being the most dominant MMO. As you can clearly tell regardless of the license, Star Wars is not the most popular brand in video games.

I guarantee that the majority of WoW players, and I can't imagine I'm exaggerating by throwing out a number like 90%, don't know what TOR is. They don't know who Bioware is, they don't know what TOR is, and chances are they don't even play video games outside of WoW. I've met a bazillion WoW players in my day, and I used to play it myself. It's just it's own seperate corner of the market. Nobody disturbs it, and nothing it does echoes out into the rest of the market.

The thinga bout WoW is that it can pretty much run on anything. However, im pretty sure TOR will need a beefy PC in order to run. That might hurt it.

Nope, not even it. It's not meant to compete with WoW, and I'm sure it'll be something radically different from typical MMOs, or even typical Blizzard. The Old Republic will compete with WoW, but I doubt it'll do that much damage to WoW. WoW is far too iconic.

Why? The graphics aren't particularly impressive, and I'm sure Bioware understands that an MMO needs to have a low barrier for entry.

What do you guys think?

I was WoW hardcore gamer since EU beta , ive quit 2 times for various reasons ( mostly when game felt old like AQ patch , BC after we defeat Illidan and after a year in WoTLK. ( an almost a year farimng naxxramas was toooo boring and then i lost interested though i did a raid or 2 with my Friends priest to arthas ). First of all we have to admit ( oldschool WoW and mmorpg veterans will agree with me ) that WoW was THE most solid MMORPG ever introduced on its time VS ANY other mmorpg. And no im not talking about superior graphics , physics. Im talking about the overall feeling of the game. GREAT geometry open world like no other mmorpg , solid art , great mounts ( who didnt run a whole day with his first 100% mount back in release?!! haha ) , great story ( based on Warcraft afterall ) , great mechanics , intensive battles ( PvPers know what i mean ) great responsive controls ( yeah , even with the annoying jumpers ) , very nice skills execution , great in game characters , great regions ( how many times we wowed when we entered a new region ) and i can go on till tommorow why WoW had and it has this succeed. Now ill ask you this TC. Will TOR offer and will it make it to wow mmorpgers ? I doubt it. Game is only a year or less for release , nothing wowed gamers atm , only the heavy name and the very solid CGI trailer. Nothing more. Lets be honest. We havent seen ANYTHING spectacular atm to get excited about , we based on hype and mini trailers. Same we did with WAR online and in the end the in game was lacking too much. Back then everyone said the same. WOW killer. well WAR online is nearly dead. Im not saying wont be good game , im just saying wont be anything out of this world like WoW felt when it first came. Classes look unexciting , skills one of the same , explosions are the same in every explosion you see in game , even swords are not flashy enough. Fights are not intensinve at all , animations are ...clumsy to say the least . Armors etc are not "shiny" enough etc etc etc... If we add that TOR will have to compete with game as BLADE and SOUL DRAGON NEST DIABLO 3 GUILD WARS 2 TERA TORCHLIGHT ONLINE CATACLYSM ( wow exp ) VINDICTUS FF 14 You see the competition is so high and wow is keep goin so strong where TOR to kill wow should have been soooooo solid and exciting and excel in everything in order to kill it , not to say give it a little competition the least. Well guess what , that wont happen. Even IGN editors that played TOR said it wasnt exciting enough and better fix some things before release. So wasnt my thought only afterall. So , WoW get killed? we heard it 4-5 times now. WAR online - Aion etc. Never happened and in fact , it didnt even affect it. TOR will do that? No way , game is not on another lvl to do so. Quote this "" TOR will do just ok just because is a popular SW product and because Bioware "" . Quote this for further discussion if you want. Game is not so good as you sound TC. TBH i think it looks bad. For a bioware 2011 game that is. And compare it to wow , gives wow kudos instead. Well future will say. Im not a WoW fan btw ( well i used to be tbh with you the first 2 years of the game when it was interesting and was feeling fresh) , my quits can say that clearly. And no i dont think ill go back to Cataclysm ( because theres nothing new or anything worth imho)

TOR will add nothing to the MMO landscape. Having a moral choice system in an MMO makes no sense, since you choose whether you're a Jedi or a Sith at the beginning of the game. As such, there will likely be no real choice system. Bioware is officially garbage in my book. KOTOR 3 on with current gen graphics, physics and a whole new cast of characters would've been awesome, but no, they had to make some generic MMO. **** you, Bioware.

WoW is here to stay until Blizzard pulls the plug, which will be in a few milleniums most likely.

at any rate, I for one will be playing TOR from open Beta to launch, and God willing, remain my MMO for several years.

what i'm mad about is the combat system dosn't seem to us ethe D20 (20 sided Dice) style that KOTOR had, and the leveling seems too similar to WoW, i mean all Bioware had to do was look at the old Mechanics for KOTOR 1 (KOTOR 2 has a better system overall, but none the less KOTOR 1 was solid). but I'll hold judgement untill we near release.

I guarantee the expansion sells are closer to the original game sells. Several people bought it online.

As for my opinion, I say no. Not as enthusiastically as your poll might suggest but still no.

I had high hopes for SWTOR, but after watching several videos it pretty much just looks like WoW in a star wars universe. New MMOs need to stop trying to beat WoW in its own game. As many have said, WoW will die when Blizzard decides to kill it not when another game comes along to kill it.

Here is the thing. Everyone that knows and likes the Warcraft universe is a gamer. Everyone who knows and likes SW is not necesairly a gamer. KOTORs fans for the most part dont like the idea of the sequel being an mmo. SW games have had many ups and downs while the Warcraft games and Blizz games overall have been a steady stream of higly rated and acclaimed games that had an impact on gaming. I do not see SW getting anywhere close to WoWs numbers then again I am also a firm believer that WoW is the exception not the rule for succesful mmos. I do not think there ever will be an mmo that comes close to WoWs population and thats in part to the changing mmo genre. At E3 there were something like 30+ mmos. Simply put there is variety that did not exist when WoW was launching.

It has a chance, but WoW allready has a huge established community, those 11.5 millions won't quit because of just one game. When WAR, AoC, Aion and a few others released, most of WoW players left to try them out, only to come back in a month. For example, WAR was super fun, but it is a highly orientated PvP game, which means no community = no PvP, and people who left WoW for WAR returned shortly.

We havnt seen anything on its PvP or Proper MMO based content yet. so how can anyone come to that conclusion? At the moment they are focusing on solo story content which is pointless in an MMO imo, or at least, should rightfully not have MORE attention than MULTIPLAYER itself.

People fail to understand how successfull wow really is compared to every other MMO No other subscription based MMO even has 1.5 million active players on it right now aside from Wow. So before Wow came out and even now really if new MMOs even hit 500 k plus that is still a big success (sustained memebers that is) A good example is Square Enix with Final Fantasy 11. It makes a ton of money still to this day for SE but it only has 500 k players.

My point is SWTOR will be a big success and it does not need to sell 10 million to be a big success, but anyone that thinks that it will take out Wow is just killing themsleves. Wow is like the Walmart of MMO games. Wow is very easy, low system specs, and the regular monsters in the game almost can't kill you. That given wow is here to stay.

I think its a good thing becuase all the casuals will stay on wow and more hardcore players will go to SWTOR, and FF 14. Just the way I like it.

Would be cool if it was that good, but I really doubt it. I don't think Bioware could make a successful MMO. They're great story tellers but I'm just not sure if they can do the other parts of an MMO correctly. We'll see.
