A window in time where people ignored graphic whores in favor of expanding the realm of interaction with a video game. Given gen 6 games are still being pushed out as new games with shiny coats of paint, I'd say that's about where it died for mainstream developers.

The "master race" has nothing to laugh out. Almost every genre they own is now the domain of consoles, including objectively superior genres such as FPS.

Aside from strategy titles, MMO's and smaller low budget titles, all the blockbusters, literally every one, is created first and foremost with either a Xbox or Playstation in mind.

It's like surviving Pearl Harbor and boasting 2 planes didn't get leveled.

Plus all the cool CRPGs we are getting is pretty reminiscent of the glory days of the early PC era. I think it's a great time to be a gamer on whatever platform.

I remember the days of when you bought a game and it was finished, bug free, and tested property. I remember the days of no DLC or Season pass bullshit. I remember the days of variety in gaming, lots of smaller dev houses pushing out interesting and new ideas to market, compared to today where we are down to a handful of makers all pushing out the same rehashes to games that already exist.

I remember the days of no long installs or patch times. I remember the days of couch coop. I remember the days of when E3 didn't suck and there was actual gameplay shown instead of trailers for games that might exist within three years. I remember the days when people used to care about awesome gameplay over counting pixels.

Wonder to what extent if any MS will sell them at a loss in recouping costs later through software sales, that can make a major difference on price point. Also curious if given the year+ between their E3 announcement and when it releases whether we'll get updates to its capabilities. Also worth considering MS every year has tens of billions of dollars to write off on taxes that they use to make major acquisitions or IP purchases and whatnot, they could just as easy tap into that total to write off investments like taking temporary losses on hardware and such. For instance MS with the Xbox 360 took a $1 billion loss initially just to double the RAM of the Xbox 360 because Epic Games convinced them it would have made a tremendous difference on Gears of War, they swallowed the cost themselves to keep the Xbox 360 price point down.

My glory days was when I withdrew $300 twice from an ATM and bought 2 STB Blackmagic Voodoo 2, cash at an EB store. The cashier had a wide open jaw as I left the store. Nowadays, it's nothing. But, back then? Oh, yeah.

Then, it was my turn to drool as I played Quake 2 uber schmooth at 1024x768. Still got the original CD. Still play the game on a netbook.

I will never be six years old again and have the same wonder and excitement that I felt back then but besides that I think games are the best they have ever been right now. I couldn't be happier.

I'm disappointed in this thread TC. I thought we were going to talk about games.

1. By the time the 360 was around PC prices already started to drop and you could easily have a higher grade system with 600 bucks. In fact at the time i had a better system from 2003 that cost 499 and a 199 video card i got a couple years later that put it above the 360.

Aside from the 90s and maybe a year or two into the 2000s, this whole "PCs are expensive" thing was mostly a myth and IMO it came from people who probably simply saw ads in gaming magazines for Alienware. Which was a very overpriced company. But by '02 AMD had started pushing chips 10-30% faster than Intel's at a fraction of the cost.

2. The Scorpio will not be 400 or 499, it will be well above this. IMO $699 is more realistic but also a low end given what they want to do.

3. Even if it was 499, you could definitely build a better PC that im sure will get higher and more stable FPS, at that price. My "internet browsing" PC i am currently on (that i also use as a test PC) is a low end quad core given to me by a friend who got a new PC and my only cost was adding a $29 SSD and $279 dollar GPU that can currently do better than the best expectations of the Scorpio.

I still have my AGP Voodoo 3/16megs. Ill never forget buying it at Staples of all places, this was back when they used to have a full wall of GPUs.

My upgraded GPU was a TNT2 ultra that pushed a killer 32megs.

And then came games like Battlefield 1942, MOH:AA, COD and i upgraded to a GeForce4 Ti 4800SE with uhhh... 128megs ram i think. Which i actually kept for quite a while. That thing was able to keep up with modern games for a good three years.

Glory days will return with Jet Moto 4 and Twisted Metal Black 2!!! And only if Singletrac makes 'em!!!!

You mean you want the Arcades to come back TC ? Those were wonderful days indeed, being a teenager during the arcade age was glorious, run to with a bunch of quarters in your bags ( here we didn't use quarters, we purchased quarter size coins ), you got three lives and that was it.

Even NES 8 bit games had bugs and glitches but they couldn't be fixed. Also games were way easier to debug as they were much simpler so bugs didn't always effect ones ability to beat it though some pretty much were due to them. Also graphics had always been a big seller with gamers, when Amiga games dropped jaws due to superiority over consoles. Why do you think Arcades were so popular then? They were the showcase for future graphics on consoles. Even 16 bit consoles couldn't get a 1:1 Arcade port unless it was from older hardware. Graphics were more important to hype back then than they are now and were very important to gamers.

It's noteworthy to mention how far different the global economy is and how it effects the gaming market. In that sense, it'll never be the same
