imo, i am doubting it... i believe the 'playstation' name- as powerful as it might be, might have run out of gas... do you think sony might be unveiling a new start as it were to the console industry by unveiling a new console at this or next years e3 with a completely different branding? if so, the psp2 wouldn't be called a psp... the wii has shown (thru sales) that consumers want something fresh- thus, sony might have a huge surprise for us all at e3... do u think it might happen?

Why would they name it something other than PlayStation - each time they've announced the same name with a new number attached, fanboys went crazy hyping it up as the next big thing. With that said, it doesn't matter what it's called, the exclusive games will determine if people are interested in owning it.

The simple fact that it doesn't do everything means they should be sued for false advertising.

Why not? People seem to like and/or are used to the name and all.

Obviously it will be called PS4. You are acting like the Playstation is now a bad name with 100's of millions and millions of users on PSP, PS2, and PS3 gaming today.

You must have missed out on 2008, 2009, and 2010's Playstation 3's performance. The PS3 is now 4.3 million away from the 360, with over 36 million PS3's out there and growing, the Playstation name is fine.

Yes, the PS brand took "massive damage" in comparison to the previous machines, but the PS3 is just fine.

The original Xbox sold over 12 million less than the PS3's install base and the PS3's lifecycle is only half done! Remember the original Xbox had the full benefit of a lifecycle we can look back at, whereas the this generation is still going and growing, the Nintendo Gamecube was arguably Nintendo's worst selling console (again, selling less than the PS3's install base at just this point), and those companies kept coming...this is a no brainer, PS4 is on the way, probably in two years.

This is a sales thread, so I get it, but it's up to Sony if they want to release another $500-$600 console, because that's the Number One reason the PS3 has struggled in comparison to the PS2 and PSOne.

I would think so since "Playstation" is a world-wide recognized brand.

Playstation is the mecca of console gaming, has been for almost 20 years and will continue for 20 years onward. The name isn't going anywhere and the assumption that it might provokes me to think you feel they are failing in some sort of way.

The more obvious question is whether Microsoft will stick with 'Xbox" as the past year has shown it is truly the inferior console.

IMO by the end of these consoles life spans the Ps3 will have surpassed the Xbox in sales which is honestly Microsofts only argument of superiority.

As others are saying, the playstation brand is not in trouble, if a system by any other name went started at $599, I don't think it would have survived. You could say the brand is stronger then ever because despite the suicidal l price tag the system survived. So no I doubt Sony is going to abnondond the Playstation name.

excatly. casual gamers who don't follow gaming news like most of us everyday, would have nearly no idea how good/bad a new console under a different name from Sony would be :P Playstation stands for quality hardware and a large range of names. Just like Maca stands for fast food :P

No, they'll call it something that no one will recognize because that's how branding works.

If you want to know whether they'll call it the Playstation 4, that's a different matter. I wouldn't be suprised if they had a sort of 'subtitle' instead of the number, like "Playstation Nova" or some dumb car model name like that.

Man ,I remember when I first got my PS3, how weird it sounded to actually say it at the time. After saying "PS2" for year, "PS3" sounded so alien. Now that I'm completely used to it, the thought of a "PS4" sounds alien to the ears... :?

And how do you know this?

The cheerleading in this post is just way over the top.

Anyway, as for the topic, of course it'll be called PlayStation 4 (it's pretty silly to suggest otherwise) and it might have the same controller as well.

PS4 and Playstation 4 don't sound very good. Plus, numbered naming schemes start to suggest stagnation after the third time. Calling it the PS4 would go against Sony's efforts to stop people from thinking of them as out-of-touch and arrogant; it would be smart of them to give the new console a 'fresh' image, and that could by all means start with the name.

That's a fair point, but do you really think Sony would go that route? I'm sure they still see the PlayStation name as carrying too much brand power to abandon?

Like I said in another post, they would be smart to go the 'subtitle' route and use a word in place of the 4, retaining the Playstation part.

You mean serious about the "everything" part? Companies have been sued for less.

If you think about it:

They advertised Linux support, people bought the system, they removed that feature.
They advertised backward-compatibility, first by hardware, then by software, then removed that feature completely.
They feature the store, Home, and online gaming, then limit users from going online unless they upgrade the system firmware.
They advertised web browsing, but it has limitations when it comes to Java and Flash.

There is no way Sony will drop the playstation brand name. However, I think they will drop the numbering system. I think their next console will have a subname instead of a number.
