Even as the 3DS moves from strength to strenght on the back of record breaking sales, incredible new AAA titles, both at retail and available digitally, new colors and bundles and increased third party support, the DS itself seems to be unwilling to die, and sells a respactable amount every month.

As a matter of fact, it seems to have found a new lease of life recently, what with the just released Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 and the announcement that the eagerly awaited Pokemon Black/White 2 will in fact be DS games and not 3DS, as expected.

Will the DS ever die? It seems that like the PS2, which was another incredible system, the handheld is just unwilling to fade into obscurity.

It'll only ever die when there's less demand for it.

It's obvious it's a good choice for people who can't afford a 3DS at the moment or want a portable that's inexpensive with great titles.

I wonder if the new Pokemon announcment will Canabalize 3DS sales like great games for the PS2 did for the PS3. I mean why buy a 3DS when all the good stuff is still coming out for the DS...

Definitely. It had the same absolute dominance, the same level of sales, support, quality games, and now, it seems, it has the same resilience that the PS2 did.

3DS is around the same price as a DSi XL. The only way you can get a DS cheap is via Kijiji, eBay or Craigslist.

A DS Lite is $99, and with a massive library of 5000+ titles, it's easy to see why it may be regarded as a cost effective investment

It's to early to say it's like the PS2. Though I hope you're not suggesting extended life support is a bad thing.

Not at all, this extended support for the DS makes me happy and tells me that Nintendo might be more willing to support its products beyond their regular lifespan.

The 3DS seems like such a no brainer at this point, considering you can't buy DS Lite new in stores anymore, and the price difference between 3DS and DSXL is like, what? Aren't they the same price? Add in the fact that the 3DS is backwards compatible with DS games, and it's a no brainer. It was perfect for me, because I didn't have a DS when I bought my 3DS.

The DS Lite is actually still manufactured and sold in the US and EU territories. It is only in Japan that it has been discontinued. And you are correct, there is no difference in the prices of a DSi XL and a 3DS.

That's strange. I went to like 5 different stores looking for a DSLite, and each of them told me they were discontinued and no longer in the systems. I wanted to get a DS Lite to play all the DS games, and I was going to get a 3DS later down the line. Once I found out (or was falsely informed of) that DSLite was no longer being carried, I just decided to get a 3DS, because it cost the same as the available DSi and DSXL models (Which I thought were the only available ones).

I have a bad feeling the DSi XL is stealing some sales from the 3DS due to naive parents buying their children the XL instead, and saying "Look Tommy, it's even BIGGER than the 3DS!"

You are... right? I just did a search of Walmart's, Best Buy's, Amazon's and Gamestop's websites, and they don't list new DS Lite units at all. Huh. When did this happen? As of May last year, the DS Lite was in full production, and being used by Nintendo to target the low spectrum of the handheld market.

I would buy a DSLite right now if I could. It is the best handheld ever made in my opinion. I have owned one, the Zelda model in fact. I was also a day 1 buyer of the DS fat, but the DS Lite, man, that is a great little system. The battery life alone is the reason I wanted it so badly. I have read reports saying that the DSi and DSXL just don't measure up to the DSLite in battery life.

You can still buy them on Amazon of course, I might do it. I just don't want a used one because the thing with handhelds, people wear them out usually. Just like used controllers, they get pretty beat up, and a handheld IS the controller, so wear and tear is usually pretty bad on them. I'll only buy a handheld new.

The XL approximates the DS Lite's battery life pretty well, but yes, I agree with you. The Lite is the greatest handheld ever. Perfect design, perfect battery life, the Lite hit the ball out the park on every parameter imaginable. If it didn't have those hinge cracking/faulty L button issues (the latter is a problem with mine), it would be perfect. Fun fact: at 95 million units sold, did you know that the DS Lite is the highest selling handheld hardware model ever? (As a matter off fact, it might be the highest selling video game hardware model ever, but we don't have data across SKUs and models for home consoles, so we can't guess).

It probably is the highest selling hardware ever, because the PS2 had a ton of different SKU's for both the fat and slim models.

The only correct answer for that statement is the PC

Not really, since it's severely lacking in the fighting and rhythm game genres. On the other hand, the only genre I can think of that the PS2 was weak in is maybe simulation?

I would say neither answer is 100% correct.

It will die--eventually, as with everything else. Just bought one off ebay earlier after I heard the Pokemon B/W 2 announcement. LOL. I just sold it three months ago for $70 and now I'm buying one back for $50. Hope the seller does send the system and hope it is as described. :D

This is where Nintendo bugs me. They know that the game will sell to both DS and 3DS ownders. What they aren't telling us is that a 3DS Pokemon is likely arriving in the fall of this year.

It will die faster than the PS2. The only reason PS2 lived was because it came out in countries where gaming isn't popular and piracy is widespread. The DS is not launching in this countries because Nintendo doesn't have a way to distribute them there.

The 3DS is also well on its way to be a true DS successor. PS3 is no such thing to the PS2. The PS1 lived because it was dirt cheap compared to PS2 $100 vs. $300.

It'll only ever die when there's less demand for it.

It's obvious it's a good choice for people who can't afford a 3DSat the moment or want a portable that's inexpensive with great titles.

DSi - $149.99

3DS - $169.99

[QUOTE="OB-47"]And in the end: Who cares about simulation

The entirety of SimHQ, for a start. Just because you don't care for hardcore racing and flight sims (of the sort you only find on PC) doesn't mean nobody does. Anyway, I was expecting this sort of longevity from the DS. Just look at the original Game Boy line.

And you are correct, there is no difference in the prices of a DSi XL and a 3DS.

well GS discontinued ds lites in our stores so im pretty sure nintnedo cancelled them everywhere else in the US you could only buy a ds lite used

2D DS games still hold up well. The 3D ones are pretty bad though , they look worse than PS1 games.

I think Mario Kart DS still looks pretty good.

I think Nintendo will phase out the DS sometime around next year, especially when rumors are hot and heavy for a 3DS redesign, which may likely be announced by E3. Phase out the DS, lower the 3DS original model, and get ready to showoff 3DSLite! or XL or whatever it will be called. :P It makes sense, and then watch Nintendo say DS games will possibly come downloadable next year, or maybe 3DS games...

If there is a 3ds revamp, it's going to be bigger. The 3DS is as small as it can get. In all honesty, unless there is a breakthrough in battery technology, the DS Lite battery life is as good as it gets.
