Mmh, I would say no.
The Witcher so far have been far closer to its RPG roots then Mass Effect ever was. Which is offputting to pretty much all people WHO are not into RPGs.
Preperation, the act of conversation and thinking ahead will tend to wield results in the witcher, I would argue that the player is more then just incuraged to do so.
ME after 1 was prtty much just third person shooters, easy to grasp, little thinking involved. It is nice Black and White in terms of right and wrong (I would argue that you can ONLY be a hero in mass effect, just between the by the books one, and the badass one).
In Mass effect you are always pointed to the exact place where you need to go, the witcher games have been far less handheldy (althrough TW 2 took a big step into that direction)
And there is the fact that The witcher has some of the most mature themes in games (there ARE other games that deals in it just as well or better, but TW is in the general area, although sometimes in an almost childish way).
Basicly the average gamer is a couch potato they want to use as Little thought as possible, the story to be straight farwards and simple, they want choices that reflects on the imidiate reward, not what happens 10 hours Down the line.
So no the witcher does have a niché audience, TW 3 has th advantage of it being one of the first and prettiest RPGs to come out on the new systems, so it will sell. People will also flock to the "bigger then skyrim" which sadly makes people Draw the conclusion that this is LIKE Skyrim, which it is not. It really is close to the classical RPGs with choice and consequence overshadows what build order you have and what you min max.
