So we used to get new gens about ever 5-6 years. Now its become more like ever 6-7. With covid and such will the next gen like ps6, xbox series 2 what ever its called take longer to get here? If you go by like the 6-7 years that would mean new gen in 2026-2027. Right now there is talk about chip shortage maybe going all the way to 2023. That would mean like 2+ years after release before a lot of people can get the system. Than you have the fact that just about ever game is being delayed at least once because of covid and work from home. GOW, GT7, Horizon FW, Kena, Ratchet and clank basically all got delayed at least once and its not just sony games but lots of mulitplatform games to. Heck Star Wars lego Skywalker saga went from late 2020 to early 2021 to spring 2021 to now still not having a release date yet. Its gotten to the point where I am expecting a game to get delayed untill I have it in my hands. Now you have some places starting to go back into a lock down again.

I beg for it to be no longer than 5 years, and i don't want any pro (slim is okay) versions either. In the first few months of the systems launch, we already have A LOT of settings from a bunch of games that run below the lowest available settings on pc. I don't even want to think what we've be having in 3 years from now (Switch performance🤣). I would absolutely hate it if this gen lasts 7 years. It would be so damn bad.

I won't be surprised if it lasts longer because of the shortages.

I think we're gonna see mid generation upgrades become the norm. I don't think last gen that was a one off, I think that's the new standard. Gamers are wanting new hardware updates earlier than 7-8 years and this gives companies an opportunity to do so without being a massive update. I think it'll be just as long as last gen too, closer to 6-7 years than 5-6 years.

I think all major releases will be playable on Ps5 and SeriesX for a looooong time. We may get sequels to them, but it will take very long before they are left behind. Maybe over 10 years.

With the new systems able to handle UE5, I don't see why they can't last a decade.

This. It's going to take a few years for people to even get the system they want, then it would end 2 years later? i'd say 7-8 years to be honest.

5 years is not that long and even more so if we are having shortages for the first like half of that 5 year time. The other thing is to because of work from home and covid games are taking longer to make than they would normally. That means several things. 1. Longer time before companies can make money for there games, 2 also means longer before they can start there next game. Say a company takes 4 years to make a game that would have taken 3 if not for covid. Well now that also means next game is like a year behind where it would have been if not for covid. 3 With way things are going we dont know if covid, lockdowns, work form home etc will be gone any time soon. I mean we have already been dealing with this for like 18 months and no real sign of things being back to normal any time soon. If things dont get back to normal any time soon I could see this being like a 9 year gen.

I think the mid gen was a 1 off and that we only got it because of 4k starting to take of more. 8k is more than like 2-3 years off from being able to be a console price. So I really dont see the need for a pro.

9year gen would be a tragedy.

This is going to be the stabilization generation. The generation that permanently kills off the concept of generations.

Seems that way to me. Shortages and the virus will hold another generation back. And then there's the level of graphics that's already so high, I don't know how much better they can get without costing a small fortune, and whether or not the average consumer would even want them.

High speed internet is arriving in harder to reach areas at a rapid pace, data limits are going away, and with that digital entertainment is already starting to dominate the market. Subscription services are becoming a thing, so it's likely that physical hardware and software will no longer be profitable or desired in the coming years.

Any of these hardware devices you can get your hands on now will be valuable museum relics by the year 2030.

If the generation only lasts a few years what's the point of getting a console? The great games won't even be out for a few more years.

I think this gen goes 7 years.

Perhaps but, cross gen is going last like 2-3+ years.

You can't release games that cost $150M+ on consoles that have just 20-30M units sold.

With game delays, prolong game development, games getting bigger and bigger, cross-generation games, all seems to be the norm, going by these consoles launch year, 2020, I think this generation will slowly creep into 8 years.

I might skip this gen get a PS6 if they can solve their shortages by then. I can't see this gen being very long they can't even get systems out.

I think traditional generations are becoming a thing of the past, but this gen will be as long if not longer that the previous 7 year gen. They'll still do the mid gen refresh (Microsoft's already working on theirs) but it will be longer, not shorter.

Think about it from the company's perspective. You spend millions on R&D and manufacturing only to sell a product at a loss, but you recoup that loss in software and subscription sales after selling the product. It's in the company's best interest to keep consumers on a product as long as possible to maximize profits, lock them into your ecosystem, avoid that R&D/manufacturing cost, and avoid a potential failed launch. Also, the longer the consumer is in your locked ecosystem, the higher probability they will feel a loss if they jump to a competitor next gen.
