Lets think. Yes graphics can be improved... but how much can they really be improved. Look at the HD cutscenes in FF13. They are amazing. Now look at a cutscene from FF10. I think we have made it to that point with ingame graphics now.

So lets say next "generation" we can actually have games with graphics as good as the cutscenes in Final Fantasy 13. (remember I'm talking about the HD out-of-game ones) I can't imagine going much farther than that in terms of graphics.

After the next consoles are released I cant really foresee another set of consoles for a LONG TIME. Like a long time. Computers will of course continue to get new graphics cards. but I mean it has to stop somewhere right?

After the next generation starts... will we move into things different than gaming consoles?? Like... VIRTUAL REALITY!! O_o _>

I'm in a very curious mood as you can tell.

Graphics are just one aspect. They can still improve AI, draw distance, amound of enemies, dismemberment among other things. Let's not forget that it will take longer than you think to get there. Consoles always have too crappy of hadware to do graphics as good as people think they can.

Hardware isn't only used to improve graphics.

A better question would be how long until the idea of a home console becomes obsolete?

I think the cost of development is the biggest hurdle for another gen.. I do think next gen might not focus on beefier hardware but peripherals. I hope I'm wrong. I'd love an affordable console with 2 gigs of RAM.

When video game graphics meet the quality of Pixar movies we will no longer need new generations.

no we have a long way to go. Games now have jaggies, low resolutions, bad textures, blocky models. Next gen will probably be cgi movies. Once everything looks lifelike then we will go beyond that by rendering individual cells, than molecules and atoms.

I think the next one will be the last major gen. we see for a while. By the time we actually get to it, blu-ray drives will be affordable enough, motion control, 3d, dlc, and the social features will be thoroughly tested and ready for a truly dedicated console.

That said, I doubt that it will be as large of a change as it was from ps1-ps2 or ps2-ps3. I also expect a way to upgrade the console in a simpiflied manner to cut initial costs and increase their lifetimes.

Graphics are still far off from being perfected. When the next gen comes, you'll look back at the current gen and realise what needed to be improved.

we might have the tech, now we gotta improve the efficiency. you know it takes a long time to make an HD game. i think with even better tech, it can be shortened

^This. I think that if every game next gen looked at least as good as UC2/GoW2 in 1080p and was cheaper/faster to make, I would be a happy gamer.

Until we have physics (and thus things such as lighting) calculated at the in-game quantum level, we can always improve.

Idk if we can go much farther with graphics, but gamingwill still go on. The future, however, will be indie developers. They are the ones with the creativity. In the end, people are gonna get tired of first person shooters, and HD graphics. They will need something new and fresh. They will need, indie games.
