yup 14 million copies lost and probably 80 million untis gained (by the wii titles that the zelda teams made instead of zelda TP, phantom hourglass and spirit tracks)[QUOTE="farnham"][QUOTE="Thunderdrone"]
The audience for Zelda games is not the same one that bought all those Wii Fits. The only thing nintendo would be doing by killing the Zelda franchise is turning down the opportunity to sell around 14 million copies of fully priced software, roughly the amount of copies TP and the two DS entries sold so far.
What are you exactly trying to do here?
sonic_spark
Now you're saying that the people who bought Zelda could've been people buying more Wii titles. Then Nintendo should only make Wii titles and not make anything else right?
Seriously, you're running around in circles.
yes thats what im saying. nintendo EAD at this point should only make nintendogs, brain training, 2D mario, mario kart and wii sports. thats the games that people wantAdvance wars and Fire emblem is an intelligent systems game Kirby is a HAL game Golden Sun is Camelot Metroid is Retro, Nintendo SPD1 Sin and Punishment is Treasure Nintendo is publishing those titles. but they are not their main focus out of the games you only listed one EAD game. and that one is in a long long hiatus. also why do you say i should ask myself if sony or ms should kill franchises that sell below their standards. they actively do. Where is jumping flash, where is grabbed by the ghoulies 2, where is blinx 3, where is vib ribbon 3 ? games that dont sell all that well get axed by any company. and yes 5 million is a high number. but the fact that the EAD team can make a lot more money right now by making Wii.. titles makes developing zelda look less and less attractive.. that said. are you trying to say nintendo is delegating zelda to another developer then EAD?[QUOTE="farnham"][QUOTE="caryslan2"]
Why would Nintendo ditch Zelda when they spend resources to develop Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Kirby, Pikmin, Golden Sun, Metroid, and Sin and Punishment games? All of those series sell well below Zelda's standards, and yet Nintendo keeps developing those titles.
Ask yourself this, should Sony kill off any franchise that sells below the standards of Gran Trusimo? Should Microsoft kill off any franchise that sells below Halo's standards?
Even if Zelda Wii sold only 5 million units, that's still far more sales then most games will ever see and would be considered successful. Zelda is one of Nintendo's key franchises, which means the only way the franchise would die is if the next games sells very poorly.
caryslan2
Intellegent Systems, Hal, Retro, and Nintendo SPD are developers that are owned by Nintendo, which means the success of their games impacts Nintendo. Nintendo also has much to lose when a game they publish fails to sale. And I did not mean obscure Sony and Microsoft franchises when I was using my example. I was talking about franchises like God of War, Uncharted, Killzone, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Gears of War, Fable, and Forza.
Zelda earns Nintendo lots of money, so it would be foolish to say that they should kill the franchise just because it may earn less money then Mario, Pokemon, and Wii series titles. You're missing the point that Zelda is a key Nintendo franchise, that has always proven successful. Most of the Wii series titles sell because they are bundled with the Wii or additional hardware. Zelda has always sold well on its own accord.
Plus lets be honest here, none of Zelda's compertiors are proven franchises that have not even appraoched the sales of most Zelda games. Zelda is far from a dying franchise that it going to be dethroned.
yes it earns them a lot of money. but they can much much more money by making other games.although i might agree that nintendo should just hire a second tier nintendo developer to make zelda games from now on. while nintendo EAD makes Wii.. games and nintendogs
[QUOTE="sonic_spark"]
[QUOTE="farnham"] My argument is pretty simple The Wii.. line is a lot cheaper to make and sells a lot more. The zelda genre is getting more and more competition which means the zelda games are getting harder and harder to make..farnham
Inconsistent arguments.
Zelda games take time. The Zelda team isn't the same team that works on the Wii titles. So your point is null and void.
yup thats where you are wrong. the zelda team actually is the same team that works on the Wii.. titles. ITs called nintendo EAD. outside of EAD tokio (which is a seperate team) it is basically one big team with various groups being built around key members (for example hideki konno or eiji aonuma)The Zelda team is different than the Wii team. The EAD has a multitude of different development teams. Wii games are made by development group 2. That is not the same group as the Zelda team.
Yes, both are made in Nintendo's own in house development headquarters, but different teams make different games. If only 1 team was operating, Nintendo could not possibly produce that many games.

In 2003, Nintendo announced that a newZeldagame was underway for the GameCube,[21]developed by the same team that created thecel-shadedThe Wind Waker. In four months, Aonuma's team managed to present realistic-looking horseback riding,[25]which Nintendo later revealed to the public with atraileratE32004

They also buy systems. If Nintendo stops pumping out core franchises they'll lose that percent of their consumer base.
Think about it this way, Nintendo might not be as successful next gen. By getting rid of their dedicated Nintendo fan base would be bad business. Because the core base is who is going to buy your system generation after generation. And that core group expects their Zelda.
[QUOTE="Thunderdrone"][QUOTE="farnham"] yup 14 million copies lost and probably 80 million untis gained (by the wii titles that the zelda teams made instead of zelda TP, phantom hourglass and spirit tracks)farnhamZelda team making "Wii titles"? I know this is a joke thread but do you have a clue how big the Zelda team is, and how small the "Wii titles" crew is by comparsion? And do you honestly believe that nintendo would make more money if the Zelda team developed 5 Wii____ instead of Zelda Wii? I'm not even taking basic stuff like multiple market focus and the necessity of creating a healthy catalogue of different products in mind when i say this, but there is a reason nintendo spaces out the releases of these Wii titles. They have long legs and instead of saturating the market with dozens of games, they keep promoting the same handfull of titles for a longer period of time. Hmm lets see according to the credits around 60 people worked on wii sports i am kinda to lazy to count the zelda credits but here you go http://www.mobygames.com/game/wii/legend-of-zelda-twilight-princess/credits

Wii Sports was the game that would make or break the Wii and the first to implement an untested and financially unsafe main method of controls.
It probably cost a ton of R&D money too but that hardly indicates the manpower needed for these kind of games.

So they have several developers jump from team to team? Point being is that both Wii games, Zelda, Mario etc. are being made all at the same time by DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT TEAMS. All other major companies move personnel around. So why should Nintendo lock a developer into one team. Maybe his part was done who knows?
Bottom line...
1. Zelda does not affect the production of Wii brand titles.
2. Zelda sells big.
3. Nintendo needs to be able to satisfy different markets, which includes their core, who want Zelda.
4. Zelda games are no harder to make now than they were 20 years ago. The same tender love and care go into each title.
5. No other action/adventure even comes close to Zelda.
6. Zelda is guaranteed to sell big regardless.
7. The more development of Wii brand titles will over saturate the market.
8. Zelda will never die.
"nintendogs outsells zelda" yeah but as a hardcore game, zelda is doing great. The thing is, you can't just make one type of game, it's more profitable to balance casual/ hardcore games than just make 1 type of games because
a) you run out of fresh ideas
b) people don't want to buy games within small intervals, even it out with hardcore and casual games + spread them evenly in time is ideal I guess.
Excellent Zelda clones? Ha. 2D zelda(3d dot game heroes) isn't exactly a zelda "clone" when it doesn't represent the modern zelda gameplay(3D). Darksiders just sucked ass all around, it was a poor mix of god of war style combat and zelda puzzles. Okami's combat sucked, and the sequel is going to be on the DS. What does that say.
Zelda is still king.
bad logic is very very bad....
basically what youre saying is "zelda doesnt sell as well as wii___, so nintendo should kill zelda, thus eliminating any money they would have gained from it.. and that = more profit!" did i get that right?
"With all these excellent Zelda clones. Will the Zelda series finally die?"
I guess those Zelda clones aren't all that great if you hate The Legend of Zelda.
so this is where the mario hype thread went.
If Nintendo wants to appeal to all people, they have to make zelda games just as much as they have to make "wii" games. They haven't even made a nintendogs for the Wii yet, which is smart, because a game about dogs should remain a handheld game so you can take it with you. Or... one where you can transfer your dog to your handheld.
Nintendo is smart, they know what they are doing. Please, just leave it to them. These Zelda clones do not match Zelda's fine-tuned gameplay.
who considers darksiders to be better then zelda?
you may have a point with Okamidon
and there hasnt been a zelda with a 3D dot game hero styIegameplay since the ones on the original Gameboy
I think the TC is trying to show us that nintendo isn't just about making money and is making zelda games and others out of the goodness of thier hearts.
I doubt its quite like that. nintendo knows that gamers still will buy zelda games, and will probably want to for a long time, and so by releasing zelda games periodically, they are actually protecting their investment because if they took too long, and developed nothing but Wii Fit games, and then that type of game fades away, people may have moved on from zelda to other games.
all this really proves is that nintendo still has a shred of common sense and aren't completely irresponsiple regarding their classic franchises most of the time. big deal.

next to the people who claim that wii has nothing but shovelware, is the worst console ever, and is made by a company that has completely turned to utter failure.
he puts these people into the limelight, and then SW calms him down with reasonable responses.
So really TC has succeeded in making SW look like a reasonable place.
Which really works against sheep because, here on SW, Wii gets bashed most.

I did mean the SW totem pole.
I'm currently enjoying the **** out of 3DDGH,and I liked darksiders....but I would laugh in anyone's face if they think for a second that these two games or most other clones could kill Zelda...(although I do *personally* feel Alundra was a tad superior to LTTP).
Besides TC....back in the day ,there were millions upon millions of successful Zelda clones. With your logic, the Zelda franchise should've died back then.
