Wolfenstein II Marketing Campaign is Upsetting People

Bethesda has recently came out with a new short ad for Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, with the catch phrase "Make America Nazi-Free Again."

This immediately resulted in a backlash from actual Nazis alt-right groups, claiming it was an attack on them and those who support Donald Trump, as seen in the link below.

You can't make this shit up.

Bethesda responded with: "We don't feel it's a reach for us to say Nazis are bad and un-American, and we're not worried about being on the right side of history here."

It's really telling how being against Nazis has become a polarizing debate here in America all of a sudden.

I mean "Make America Nazi-Free Again." is obviously a play on "Make America great again". So they are definitely linking nazis to the Trump campaign. I think it's a bit unnecessary of them to be honest. I don't think it's productive to call everyone "nazis", which has been a tendency lately. The vast majority of Trump supporters are not nazis. There's definitely a race component to the movement, but they are not nazis. Bethesda know what they are doing here. They want to create some social media attention and they are obviously getting it, because the internet is so predictable. I don't think it's a good thing.

I'm not a Trump supporter btw, don't even live in America. Just think the public conversation needs to be a bit less angry with a bit less namecalling, that's all.

I'm not offended at all. All I see is Bethesda is confident in their game, came up with some smart marketing and it'll likely outsell the last one and we'll probably get a Wolfenstein III on next gen.

Also let's not forget Far Cry 5 also got a lot of backlash just for it's announcement alone with no marketing campaign, just a fully announce game and that was also stupid.

smart advertising if you ask me, I think they wanted to provoke outrage, which is like more free advertisement and one where a majority of people are going to side with the game publisher
