Dude, I'm not sure I understand the question unless your question is rhetorical. Branding is HUGE in marketing of any product. Would the PS2 have sold as well if it was just "gaming system"? Would Air Jordanssell as well if they were just "sweet looking bball shoes"? Would coach purses sell as well if they were "expensive leather purses"?

Building/cultivating/exploiting a brand is part of marketing and is done by all successful marketers.

[QUOTE="rpg9000owner"]

my faded memory of what i read on the first page told me that, what you actually said was that you thought it would of sold just as well .. the same amount .. suggesting the brand name didn't help it sell more than it could of sold without the Halo tag. Which i guess is quite similiar to what I claimed you said, that's the implication that I gathered anyway.

If i'm wrong then tell me what you really meant, then i'll stand corrected. If this is just more semantics then I'll conclude that this is just yet another frivolous SW disscussion.

Stevo_the_gamer

I've been consistently referring to the title of the game itself -- not the brand within the game. Meaning, I've been only referring to the NAME of the title itself. If the TITLE of the game was merely Spirit of Fire INSTEAD of Halo Wars, it would sell around the same amount.

I stand by this because of the advertising, the boxart, everything would be the same except the title of the game itself.

Edit: Afterall, I was only answering the TCs question -- since he offers no ellaboration on what he means, for I know, he could be referring to the title of the game itself only.

wow u actually taught he mean only the title being changed  even i know that he meant if instead of a game based on halo if you took the same gameplay but changed the models units and story line to not be from halo and had a different settings entirely would it have sold as well? the answer is no the halo brand propelled the game sales over other console rts.

[QUOTE="FloWeN-UK"][QUOTE="rpg9000owner"] Ok, this is where things begin to get fanboyish.

rpg9000owner

Not at all. Theres alot of casual gamers on the consoles and where theres easy to please casual gamers, theres money to be laundered. Face it when when all those HALO fanbois saw HALO Wars sitting on the shelves they didn't even give it a second thought. Insta sale right there and they probably don't even like the RTS genre.

The hardcore PC gamers don't represent the whole PC community, games like the Sims, Peggle, Dinner Dash and others still prove to be popular, there are undoubetly 'casual' gamers that game primarily on PC, after all, the PC is the biggest gaming platform for a reason, they surely must have some 'less smart' 'casual' gamers, right. Generalisations wont get you anywhere in an argument, especially when they smell of elitism.

Generalization huh? You think all casuals are the same? No their not. I'm talking about HALO fans in paticular, HALO is a very casual game for the FPS genre. PC gamers can easily see this. But to HALO fans HALO is god, theres no cause for debate here HALO Is the best FPS in existence and I will buy anything with the name HALO on it no questions asked. That is your average HALO fanboy. An that is why HALO Wars sold well, not because it has any redeeming qualitys. It's utter crap. Ofcourse halo fans will deny this because like most casual gamers they will buy anything regardless of quality. It's also why where getting milked to hell and back with DLC, online fees, short games, and onslaught of generic shooter titles. Blame it all on the casuals, the lesser beings of this planet.

Will gran turismo sell more just because of the name? Will final fantasy? etc etc..this is such a stupid argument and an utter excuse for a good game selling well. DeadMagazines

I agree with this. Haters act like Halo popularity is a bad thing :|

Halo games are popular because they are great and incredibly fun.

Did you now? I'm afraid I don't -- and can't -- read someone's mind. So, if he was referring to the game as a whole being completely and utterly different. Then maybe? It's not like the game sold like hot cakes, the game is just at around 1 million. There's plenty of games which reach that number.

What I mean is, would it have sold aswell if it had not been called Halo wars and not included noticeable refrences to the halo series, as if it were a completely new IP.

no, established franchises sell well, and unless there's lots of advertising, newer ips take longer to sell.

Of course not. The Halo IP sells games, strong IPs do that. Strategy games in general dont fare well on the console platform (compared to their PC counterparts), so such an IP was needed as a pull for the consumer. Honestly, if it *was not* a 'Halo' game how many people would actually pay attention, or care about it? Reality is not nearly as many.

A better question is: If the game didn't use the (massively successful) Halo IP, would the project have even been greenlighted for development?

Good question.

Most probably not.

It seems quite sure that Ensemble and Microsoft had quite allot riding on the IP when it was announced.

Saying that, to me Halo Wars felt as though it was more of a 'board room' idea of how to use such a franchise and development resources.

When the developers restated that 'Halo used to be an RTS when it was in development', it struck home this notion.

A game just called wars? not really, and it would still be the same game.... just halo wouldnt be in the name....

Jono789

Why not? There's a game called MAG, obviously generic names don't matter.

Oh and it still would've sold well but probably not as much as it did. You know there was a demo that was the most downloaded demo right? Obviously people liked it and didn't buy it just because it was Halo. I know plenty of people who love the Halo FPS but hate Halo Wars even though they've never played it.

My brother who loves RTS games but because of how PC games operate these days, he only plays the older ones like Star Craft n Age of Empire etc.. He bought Halo Wars and is actually loving it so I doubt this game is a bad game.

Although i did love the game i gotta say it more then likely would not of sold as much without the name. If you looked at videos on youtube on the game like after a week you would realise the amount of people that bought it and assumed it would be like the other halos.

The difference here is that Metal Gear Solid games do not suck... Halo Wars sucked but people STILL bought it because it had good games in the past with the word Halo attached to it. Funny Star Wars Empire at War sucked bad, but people still bought that too.

So, let me get this straight. Most people seem to agree that if Halo Wars didn't have "Halo" in the title, it wouldn't have sold well. But when I made a thread about Modern Warfare 2 saying how dropping the Call of Duty name could hinder sales (it will still sell very well of course), people thought that was crazy.

Well, no. That's why franchises are so sought after; they have massive consumer pulling power. You could say the same about any franchise. If 'God of War III' was called 'Kratos' Ultimate Revenge Quest' do you think it would sell anywhere near as well?

No. I'm sure casual gamers bought it because it featured "Halo" in the name. Most gamers don't do research on things they buy, it seems.

Joke thread. Obvious answer is obvious. Without Halo slapped on the box this would've probably sold less than that Tom Clancy End War.

This. In a way, it reminds me of movie-games.

If Sony called killzone 2 Halozone2 obviously it would of sold 8 million copies. In fact i think it's a safe bet to just stop making names and go the halo route. Gears of Halo, Halo kazooie, Hable 3, little big halo, motorhalo, metal gear halo.

Game industry saved.

i like your ideas for naming games.

we all know it would work though XD Instead of nicko being the main character of GTA4, just make it master chief... It would have doubled its record sales =P
