Monopolies are awesome for the video game industry.

The PS2 is still considered the best console of all time because every game was on the system and Sony Dominated.

Why wouldn’t you guys want all the games on 1 system?

I would love if Microsoft/Nintendo quit making consoles and only made games for PS5.

This would solve all the problems. PS5 would sell 300 Million consoles worldwide and none of us would have to worry about crossplay and all that BS.

Developers would save tons of money and make massive profits.

It is a huge win for everyone.

I like simplification, so I don’t mind having a console market dominated primarily by one player. At one point, I had to own an Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP, PS2 and gaming PC just to play all the major games released between 2004 and 2012. Right now, I’m enjoying a simple market that only requires me to own a Switch, PS4 and PC. Less clutter on my shelves, less money spent on throwaway systems just because I wanted the ability/option to play AAA exclusives.

That said, as long as Microsoft releases all their major games on PC, I don’t mind them sticking around the console space - I know a lot of people are loyal to the Xbox brand and its superior controller. Nintendo is unrivaled in the portable hardware sphere and I think they will remain dominant from here on out. None of their competitors have a power-efficient device on the market, and even if they did they’re not capable of competing with Nintendo’s top shelf software. I think Nintendo and Sony have found their groove and are now sticking with their strengths, one in affordable but powerful consoles, the other in affordable but powerful handheld/console fusion devices.

It’s a really great market right now, IMO, diverse but not overwhelmingly so, and the major players have clear visions for what they want to be.

Yeah sure, thanks mostly to indie and Japanese third party developers though. It never received the same first party love from Sony, that Nintendo provided the Wii U with. They dropped it like an anchor.

Well that's certainly true, Sony stuck with the PS3 through some tough times. I won't dispute that Sony are very impressive in the way they support their home consoles, all I was saying is that their handhelds are a much different story. You should give credit to indie developers and jrpg developers such as Atlus for keeping the Vita alive in Japan, certainly not Sony. The Vita hasn't had any first party releases in years. They pretty much have been pretending it never existed at the last few E3s. Compare that to the 3DS, which itself still has both first and third party support in 2018, even though both handhelds released at roughly the same time.

Even the Wii U, which admittedly was as much of a flop as the Vita, still got a solid 4 years of support from Nintendo themselves. The Wii was around for 6 years before the Wii U came out, so that's not a bad console lifespan. You are right though, it is ultimately silly to compare the two companies. Sony is the king of home consoles, and Nintendo is dominant in the handheld market. Also like you mentioned, Sony is a big electronics company with many different divisions, so can afford to take a hit or two in it's gaming division. Nintendo on the other hand live and die depending on how well they do with their consoles. The Wii U was a painful moment for Nintendo, and they may well have SEGA'd themselves if the Switch didn't turn out to be as successful as it is now.

Well said though i remember sheep telling me are upset with Wii way earlier than its sixth year in the market. Noone wants Nintendo to go away by the way, is one of the best out there for what they do but one of the worst how they doing it.

Yup I don't doubt it, Nintendo leaned more towards the casual gamers with the Wii, which angered a lot of the hardcore fans for sure. I think the Wii U was their attempt at trying to appeal to both, but the marketing was awful haha. Mhm, I appreciate the way Nintendo pushes forward innovation, even if it is hit or miss from time to time with motion controls, LABO etc.

And hey don't get me wrong, I'm not a Sony handheld hater. The PSP was awesome, and I would love to see Sony make another one. They just need to fully commit to it, be more consumer friendly with things like standardised memory cards, and I believe they could honestly rival Nintendo. PSP 2 makes more sense than VR imo.

Think about it for a second how many times have you gone to a city with only 1 gas station and paid 4 to 5 dollars a gallon then find out when you get to a bigger city w multiple gas station you'll see a vast difference in price of gas?

No sony has a barrage of division with its own people,sony music was a totally different branch of sony to SCE,and sony pictures and so on,so was its computer division which the SOLD in fact they could sell the PS division and still sony music would have shit to do with that.

i mean on the one hand it would be nice to only have to get one platform to get games from everyone. but with no competition sony, like any company, would turn very very nasty over time. they would have their customers over a barrel.

the ideal situation is that exclusives dont exist. the console market is essentially treated like the DVD player market. everyone can make hardware to a certain standard. developers develop games to those standards. the same services are available on any device that meets those standards. so i can buy the gameXtreme station from panasonic, login to xbox live and play super smash bros with friends before playing god of war.

its a pipe dream though. vendor lock in is big business. its all about the eco system and exclusives are a big part of attracting people into an eco system. what we have now is not ideal but its still better than a monopoly.

I don't see PC gaming going anywhere. As for would I be happy...well...I do own four Sony consoles, Almost owned six different ones at one time, but no, I wouldn't be happy.
