When I was deciding which console to buy between 360/PS3 (that was late 2009 or early 2010), it was not much of a dilema to be honest. 360 was significantly cheaper back than, but that was about it.
I checked IGNs list of top 25 games on both consoles.
360 was something like this: Mass Effect (Ive already finished it on PC), Fallout 3 (already finished it on PC), Bioshock (I played it on PC and didnt like it), Oblivion (I played it on PC and didnt like it), and maybe Halo 3 (I played both Halo 1 and Halo 2 on PC and I didnt like them) and some other games that I either played on PC already or didnt want to play at all.
PS3 was something like this: Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, Little Big Planet, Infamous, Demons Souls, Warhawk, Resistance 2, Valkyria Chronicles, etc. etc. Great variety of excellent (back then generally brand new) games I couldnt ever play on my PC. And that was BEFORE Heavy Rain, God of War 3 and Killzone 3 came out. I was glad to pay the extra money for PS3 and I wouldnt change it since the difference is even bigger now than it was before. Even today I must say the best games Ive played on PS3 are all PS3 exclusives.

Games is what this is all about, TBH, MGS4 and Demon's Souls were the games why I bought a PS3, and as you say even the price difference wasn´t that much, back then you´ve got wi-fi, internal battery controllers, and online whereas my 360 didn´t have any of those, and 512mb of storage, but was like $100 cheaper (where live, not US).
Oh yeah, and until now, I still haven´t found such great games as MGS4, Demon's Souls, God of War 3, Uncharted 1 & 2 on the 360, so I agree here with you, PS3 exclusives have great quality in this gen. Too bad sales are not about quality :(
