Would you buy a console just for the controller?

Because that's almost where I am with the X1 and PS4. The DS4 feels much better then the DS3 but the X1 controller is just so.. natural and feels amazing in the hands..

I play a lot of multiplats and not too many exclusives excite me besides halo.. yeah i know typical. I had a ps3 and 360 this gen but I'm going to limit myself to one console (for awhile anyway) this gen. The main reason I'm going X1 is because of the controller.

Anyone else ever buy a system because of the way the controller feels?

I cant stand the sony controllers. The symmetrical sticks feel just awful to me. Bought an extra x1 controller yesterday, and it feels fantastic. Maybe even a little too light, but overall great. It does factor into the decision of what console I prefer, but I am also a fan of the services that live is offereing over psn. The ps4 seems good for nothing except for playing games, while the x1 offers so much more. Im sure sony will copy eventually to catch up, but they are too far behind to match it.

Yes. The controller has a huge factor in my decision.

I don't like the PS controller. I prefer the Xbox controller, the same as many PC gamers prefer it.

When I get my PS4, I'm going to look for a third-party Xbox One controller that will be compatible with the PS4. I'll only get the PS4 when that comes out.

There won't be one unless that controller has a the touchpad.

The touchpad features have not even been used that much in the games for PS4 as of now. A I don't believe that a touchpad is required, just an extra.

The touchpad is supposed to act like a start button. Maybe a third party controller can just put a start button, then use the sticks in order to move the cursor around. Or they can just implement a touchpad on an Xbox One controller.

But if they do make an Xbox One controller for PS4, that is when I will buy it.

Well no, the options button is the start button. Killzone uses it for directing your owl, AC uses it for opening and navigating the map.

But yeah, controller preference can get real for some people I guess. The DS4 is great, why don't you like it if you don't mind me asking?

Is it just the symmetrical placement of the sticks?

You could just buy the controller to use on the PC...

@good_sk8er7:

Yes, the symmetrical placement of the sticks and I find the Dualshock just too small. Not sure with the DS4 though. The DS3 was absolutely terrible for me, it was just too small for my hands and it felt uncomfortable. Sony actually considered placing the sticks at the same position of the Xbox controllers because they thought that it would be the best setup for shooters.

Toshimasa Aoki

"For the analog sticks, we did test having the analog sticks on top, since the Xbox has the left side on top [above the D-pad]," he said. "Especially from the shooter teams — we got feedback that that’s what they wanted. They knew that consumers liked the 360 for shooters."

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/10/22/original-ps4-controller-analog-stick-layout-similar-to-xbox-360

But I believe it all boils down to personal preference. I've never touched the DS4, and I've been gaming with an Xbox Controller since 2006, so naturally I'd prefer the Xbox controller over the PS controller.

You should stop by a gamestore and try it out. It's much larger than the DS3. If the symmetrical analogs are a deal breaker than I don't think anything will change that, but the DS4 really feels leaps and bounds above the current gen controllers.

I read that article awhile ago, or a different artical about the same thing. I like the symmetrical, but that's also just a personal preference. EDIT: Likewise, I've been using the DS controller since the late 90's, so yeah. BUT it is really different. You might actually like it!

I guess I should, I read somewhere that the DS4 is actually very similar to the Xbox controller, the only thing that I might not like is the symmetrical sticks.

It would probably take some getting used to, but it's very comfortable. A really substantial improvement. There should be kiosks like everywhere now, wouldn't hurt to try I'd wager.

No, in fact, the controller had no play when I was picking between the PS3 and Xbox 360. I picked the PS3 for the exclusives, but I actually like the 360 controller more. How would I know which I liked only owning the PS3? Because I have a 360 controller for my PC. Even with me buying the PS4 and not the X1, I will buy an X1 controller for my PC.

I prefer the symmetry of the DualShock controller. It's not the only reason I prefer PlayStation.

No, because I just bought a DS4. PS4 has nothing that appeals to me at the moment, but DS4 will be useful for my PS3 and Dark Souls on PC.

it's not about the controller between X1 and PS4. they are close enough.

if either one of the consoles would sell with something like WiiMote, then it would be insta-no.

It's more of a buying multiplats for a specific console because of the controller rather than buying the console because of the controller.

So the console with the inferior controller end up losing on multiplat sales.

It's never "THE" reason, but it does play a huge role.
