Just read this article in which the author predicts that Activision will start charging for online play with the next COD game. I know its just a simple prediction, but it got me to thinking about whether or not I'd be willing to pay it or not if it did happen. In what ways could it be good or bad for the franchise or gaming in general? How many people would actually pay for it? Would you guys pay for it? Why? What're your thoughts on this? Keep in mind I'm not asking about the prediction itself, but about a hypothetical siituation in which the prediction proves to be correct.

The prediction in question:

"Prediction 3: You will have to pay for some aspects of multiplayer in Modern Warfare 3. According to Activision, Project Beachhead will be integrated into the next CoD game, which is presumed to be Modern Warfare 3. In the past, Activision has said that Project Beachhead will provide "premium, value added"content that is exclusive. According to industry analyst Michael Pachter and I, this means you'll be paying a fee to play Modern Warfare 3. How much you'll pay, and what you'll get for your subscription remains to be seen, but if I had to guess, I'd say some small fee (like $5 a month) will give you a lot of content -- maps, weapons, customization options and more. This will make it seem like a bargain and people will be happy to pay for it."

I wouldn't even dare rent the game if MP is pay to play. If they do put that feature in then I lost all hope for anyone that plays it. But thats just me :P

Did you even read the article? Activision is not charging a monthly fee for the next Call of Duty. What they are doing is releasing a MMO in Asia that will support micro-transactions. However here in the West they will not be charging extra to play online.

It depends on what they give us for that. If it meant constant patching of unbalanced elements and free maps and content down the line ala World of Warcraft, I could dig it. If it was just a retread of BC2's alright patching and VIP maps, but for a cost, then no.

No. As much as I love Call of Duty multiplayer, there is not enough content to justify a subscription-based model.

Well, I know what the obvious answer would be for most of us, but its pretty obvious that the rest of the world doesn't feel the same way most of us do about COD. And since this is a hypothetical scenario we could bring up various things that may make a subscription worth it. I can't think of anything, though. lol

As I said. I'm not asking about the likeliness of the prediction being correct. I'm asking about how you'd feel in a hypothetical situation where it was correct. If you read my post you should realize that Pachter and the author's credibility to make such predictions were never in question and not meant to be a part of this discussion.

Actually in Japan select games such as Monster Hunter are pay to play online and Nintendo has (or did) considered bringing this system to the US.

Activision should do it just to make CoD even more of a joke. Do it! Never payed a monthly fee and will never do (even 1$ per month). XBL is enough of a ripoff for me.

I don't even pay for XBL Gold, why in hell would I even bother?

If this becomes the standard for MP gaming, I might as well toss my systems out the window and quit gaming all together.

I don't even pay M$ a yearly fee for XBL. I wouldn't spend a dime on CoD's crappy MP.

Although if a service like CoD legacy were released where you payed 15$ a month and got to play every CoD's MP mode with Map packs and add ons that would be worth paying for.

I wouldn't and I just know this business model would fail considering how many shooter games like COD come out each year.

Activision already knows this and they wouldn't ever dare do it.

They already make tons off of DLC. They sold 1.4 Million in the first 24 hours of First Strikes release! At this right dlc will be a bigger source of income. and unfortunately theyn will release less maps included in the game.

No I wouldn't. Seeing as I already pay for Xbox Live, why would I have to pay for COD? COD isn't even worth paying for monthly.

No. The only games I have ever played with a monthly free/subscription are WoW and Eve. The only game of those I would consider going back to is eve. If the next cod has a system where subscribers get extra content such as better guns/maps/modes etc, it would be horrible, more horrible then the game just being COD. I will never buy another cod game, let alone one with a subscription, based on what I have seen from the last 2, I can't imagine the series somehow redeeming itself.

Activision has yet to make their current iterations of CoD worth their price tag, so I doubt they'd be able to figure out how to justify charging a monthly fee. Knowing Activision, the game would still use peer to peer.

Nope. If that happens, i'll just wait until I can find it on eBay for 20-30ish bucks, experience the campaign (i've really enjoyed all the CoD campaigns this gen besides Black Ops) then swap it to a friend.

The core featureset that has been established is always going to be free. But Activision charging for online features/services added on top of that seems extremely likely given recent actions and statements by Activision. There is money to be made here, Activision likes money, and is pretty obviously gearing up for it.

Whether or not this premium service will be worth it will be decided by the market it is targeting.

I think I would not pay for it. I'm not sure I'm even going to buy the game in the first place. For the past three years I haven't found enough appeal in CoD to splurge full price, and these games remain that way until the next one is almost out. The last CoD I bought is Modern Warfare. Before that, Call of Duty.

Besides Xbox Live? No. They'd lose money on that because Microsoft doesn't allow aditional playing fees next to Xbox Live Gold.

Didn't everyone think that would happen in Black Ops and then it totally didn't? And then Kotick said it never would? They wouldn't split their market like that, not in a million years. Maybe with a spin-off, but not with the main Modern Warfare brand.

Absolutely not. I would only consider it though if the game featured dedicated servers, but even then, I still doubt I would pay.

I would very much like to see them implement a monthly fee. I firmly believe that fans would complain about it and then hand over the dollars. COD: C.R.E.A.M.

I don't think there will be a fee just for online play, but I'm sure there will be a monthly fee to acquire guns, maps, etc. It really isn't much more of a ripoff than what they are already doing, and I fully expect people to continue to buy it. I really can't believe they are still retailing it for just $60. The way it sells, I think $70-80 would be more profitable.
