Poll Would you rather take a Metroid 5 or a Metroid Prime 4? (81 votes)

Metroid 5 51%
Metroid Prime 4 49%

What's the difference?

  • Metroid 5 would be the next game in the narrative arc that covers Metroid, Metroid II: Return of Samus, Super Metroid, and Metroid Fusion. It would presumably be a 2D sidescroller Metroid game in the vein of Super Metroid or Zero Mission, and continue the story from where Fusion left off, with Samus going rogue.
  • Metroid Prime 4would presumably exist in the Metroid Prime continuity. It would be a first person action adventure shooter in the vein of the Metroid Prime trilogy. Presumably, the story continues on from the end of Metroid Prime 3.

The question boils down to whether you want to see a classic 2D style Metroid, or a first person action adventure shooter.

My answer is... I actually want Prime. Now while I know my answer will give old school Metroid fans like @darkspineslayer cancer, I can explain- I feel that the 2D Metroid template is perfected, and there is nowhere else to go with it. I also feel like with most independent games on the market attempting to emulate it, there's no shortage of fresh experiences of this ilk, should you want them.

Prime, on the other hand, is exceptionally unique- there is nothing else like it, no one else is doing anything like it, and the template itself has a lot of scope for iteration and evolution. It's not been perfected yet.

So my answer is Prime 4. What is yours?

I picked Prime, but I think a hybrid could work.

I don't know how I feel about a fully fledged 3D Metroid title from a third person view... Other M was virtually on rails the entire time. I definitely do not want a straight up 2D title.

Hmm. Even though I think that Super Merroid is the best in the series, I would love to see what they can do with a Merroid Prime on the Switch.

3rd person 3D Metroid. But between these two I'll go with Metroid 5. Super Metroid and Zero Mission are still the best in the series.

Metroid 5.

The Prime series is done. It's a relic of the past now, Metroid needs to move forwards not backwards.

Don't get me wrong, MP1 was an amazing game. The sequels were lacklustre but after years of it being first person and kind of slow and tanklike, Other M was exactly what the franchise needed. I would have loved a sequel to Other M but again, those days are gone now. We need a reboot. Like what Zelda got.

I'm with you, give us more Prime. I loved Super Metroid but there's a reason these are called old school. 2D is old. I get it indies are bringing that old 2D fun back. Leave it to them then. Metroid isn't an indie. Its a Nintendo franchise. Give it the modern treatment it deserves. Theres no shortage of 2D games to play.

Eh, I wouldn't let Other M's faults get in the way of what could be a good thing. Other M's various issues don't hinge on the fact that it was in third person. A third person 3d Metroid could definitely be great, there are so many other approaches that could be taken opposed to what Other M gave us.

And I'd say something similar to the Prime naysayers. A new first person Metroid doesn't necessarily need to feel like Prime. They could make Samus more agile while providing the spaces to accommodate. Gunplay and combat in general could be significantly improved as well. The slick action of the 2d Metroid titles could certainly be better translated to 3d space than what we've had so far.

Think movement and gunplay similar to Doom 4, but with the crazy power ups you'd expect from a Metroid game, all packed into the masterful level design you see in the series best outings. That'd be dope as ****.

Oh lord, I didn't even think about taking the Prime series and making it more fast paced like Doom 4. That'd be awesome.

Yeah, I didn't even consider it until I saw Sonic_Sparks post. Made me realize that a lot of us are looking at this too rigidly, as if the game will just be a certain way based on what they've done with these different perspectives in the past. But of course there's always room to deliver something fresh in something familiar. BotW just made that abundantly clear haha.

Now the problem is that I'll be bummed if we don't get a game like that lol. Just sounds so damn good.

I stand by that. I liked Prime but they made Samus feel like a tank, also they were a bit rehashed. Other M was the complete opposite.

Also credit to Team Ninja for making such a fantastic game with such a limited controller. No nunchuk required. Imagine what they could do with Metroid on a real console.

I like the Other M approach, blend of the 2D and 3D aspects of the series, the game played good too just most people took issue with the narrative elements, but those faults came from Sakamoto's meddling, not Team Ninja's involvement. Give them another shot. I mean, did they not make waves with Nioh?

I haven't played a Metroid game since Super Metroid. Axiom Verge gave me a S-E-R-I-O-U-S itch for more of that, though.

It was put on the Wii U (which is what I played it on), so a Switch version might not be out of the question.

Hoping for a new prime game. Generally not a fan of first person shooters, but since this series has a lot of exploring - I like it! Also would be some serious nice eye candy ;)

Prime Future for the love of god. Seriously surprised how many people want Nintendo to make SNES games in 2017. Come on, half the indie games out there are Metroidvania style. There's very few three dimensional AAA blockbuster ones, and the ones that we do get (like the Arkham games) are so bloody amazing.

2.5D Metroid 5 please. That would be the best outcome with a slightly open world format. Plus the art could be beautiful with the Switch GPU. All the better if it has a coherent story line to follow. Don't get me wrong, I love Prime. It has just run its course. It's time to return to form with some revamps to improve the fun and immersion.

"Half the games out there are Metroidvania style"

But none of them are Metroid or Castlavania.

And there is no way a first person game, no matter how well-designed, that could capture how agile and powerful Samus truly is. Screw Attack alone is impossible without switching to a non-first person camera.

That's nuts. Camera style has nothing to do with movement. You can have clunky 2d and agile first person games, easy.

I think you are having trouble understanding what I'm saying. You can't realize Samus' full potential in first person. It would give people motion sickness.

@mems_1224: How was Metroid Prime a bad game? I don't really see what they could have improved with a 3D first person Metroid game on the gamecube. If you were lead designer on Metroid prime in the early 2000s, how would you have made the game better than it currently is?

2d side scroller or some type of variant. Switch is perfect from them. I want them all back, Metroid 5, Contra, redo Super Star Wars and do the prequel and sequel trilogies. My Switch would never get put down!

A new Prime if as good or better than the first would be amazeballs, but I'm slightly worried they might be kinda milking it and don't have a real goal with it. Or maybe have some weird story or something. I've no idea which studio is making it, which isn't reassuring.

I do believe a new 2D Metroid or Other M style could still be cool and feel fresh, but I am a bit more eager for a new Prime right now.

I've never played a Metroid Prime game before. Is it an FPS? I always prefer KB/M controls for an FPS. If so, then I'd take a new Metroid game instead.

It's an FPS, but not of the variety that would necessarily need KB/M controls (though of course, it would probably be better with them)
