Because really it's all the console has going for it up until March 2008 or Late 2007.
And pretty much everywhere this game will "move PS3 units". Generally.
I have a PS3 already but I don't really care about any other game besides MGS4.

It's an important game for the system (especially assuming it remains exclusive), but, I wouldn't categorize the MGS series as "system sellers".
i could see MGS being a system seller in the past, altho it's never been called one...
however being a system seller for a$600 system, that's hard to do...

I am in the same boat. I bought my PS3 almost exclusively for MGS4, well that and FF13. I am looking forward to Lair, LBP, and Uncharted as well, although they are low on my list.

MGS is one of the biggest system sellers there are. I don't know wh people think that it isn't.
ps1: MGS was the seventh best selling game for the ps1, with 6.6 million copies.
ps2: MGS2 was the fifth best selling gamefor the ps2, with 7 million copies, and MGS3 was the eighth best selling game for the system with 3.7 million copies sold.. MGS 2 in specific relates to this, because it was released about 12 months after the ps2's launch and debatably got it rolling.
The MGS series, along with FF, GT, GTA, Halo, KH, Dragon Quest, Mario, Zelda, GeOW, GOW is a huge, huge system seller.
I personally believe that with a 600 price, many consumers will hesitate to purchase the console for one game. It wil be a huge benefit to Sony.
Oh and MGS is only guaranteed to be released by March 31st, 2008. Could still be 07, but we don't know for sure.

Trouble is that, compared to the real top sellers and system sellers (FF7 on the PS1, GT3, GTA3, and FF10 on the PS2), 3-7 million is a joke. When a console has a lot of games and a huge install base, expect a small attach rate.jsnepoIf it was a true system seller, it would create its own attach rate. GT3, the #1 seller last gen, has a little over a 10% attach rate.
mgs will be big no doubt but its not the only system sell...a big one for me is warhawk because its so much like starwars battlefront...one of my fav ps2 games.....its all about taste

MGS is only a system seller for the hardcore.
I think the only people who will buy a PS3 for MGS4 are the ones who are already fans of the franchise.
If I had to pick a system seller this generation, it would definitely be Wii Sports....by far.

Agreed.
Wii Sports alonehas sold the Wii to many of my friends (most of them are family people too).

System Seller for Hardcore GAmers? Yes
System Seller forCasual GAmers? No - Just look at MGS3's worldwide sales....pathetic for a system with a 110+mil userbase
LosDaddie
LOL with that logic then no PS2 game was a system seller. Even GTA Vice city which was the highest selling PS2 game only sold around 14 or so million. That is only a 12% attach rate. Variety was key last gen., not one game or franchise.

So you think a game with about 3% attach rate is a system seller?

No game will push the PS3 until there is a major price cut for the mass market consumer. Once they cut the price by $200, then you will see games actually impact the ps3.

I don't understand your logic. The MGS series have all bee in the top ten selling games on their systems. FFVII sold 9.8 million, and MGS sold 6.6. Big difference, true, but they are comparable. I don't see the 8th best selling game for a console like the ps2 being pathetic in any way.

Yeah, I already agreed MGS4 is a system seller. Just not one to push the PS3 over the x360 in sales.
In fact, I don't believe any game will push the PS3 over the x360 in sales while the PS3 remains above $400.

MGS3 sold less than MGS2 and had less than a 5% attach rate for the console. You call that great? You call that a system seller for the casual gamer?

Number one, I am not a cow, number two if 3% equals 4 million sold then yes its a big selling game. It sold more then the third highest Xbox game, which is the only to non halo game, SC. My point is you can hide any games success by using its large fanbase and % as an excuse. The PS2 had a ton of games and huge variety. It didnt need to have a game with 33% of its console fanbase buying it like Halo and SSB.

no PS2 game had a huge attach rate. Nothing even got close to 20%. That doesnt mean their sales are bad, it just means people had choices. When MGS2 came out there were few PS2 games available and it had a ton of hype. MGS3 came out near the end of the PS2 lifecycle and had stiff competition.
It is a niche game that sells to its fans. It sells systems to the fans but it is not by the standard definition, a "system seller."foxhound_fox
Yeah i think so to, i love MGS and will buy Ps3 just for that game and sure ps3 will get more good games but that is just a bonus :)

NOt a cow... Keep saying that to yourself, bud.
Try to stay on topic rather than defend the PS3.
The question at hand is MGS4 a systemseller. I don't believe it is a system seller to casuals. MGS3's sales alone, IMO, prove that.
All you have is excuses.

More excuses!
MGS3 had less sales than MGS2. That means the franchise has lost some of it's fanbase and yet cows think MGS4 is a system seller for casual gamers?
