1080p is better then 720p, when the same game or video is being discussed. PERIOD. That's what he is saying. He is also saying that every time a console can do something in 1080p its mentioned as a benefit, yet played down when PC gamers bring it up as a positive against the consoles. This is all.

Metalscarz

lol the original post was asking how everyone was enjoying netflix upgrade and somehow people took offence to that simple question

Crysis 1080p with low resolutions/shadows/AA, etc looks worse than 720p with higher resolution/shadows/etc. If you can play a game at a better framerate at 720p over 1080p then its better at 720p. Resolution is not everything 1080p is not always definitively better than 720p in a lot more cases than you would expect

yes it is. Crysis Max settings 60 fps 1080p is better then Crysis Max settings 60 fps 720p. The Dark Knight 1080p is better then The Dark Knight 720p. Get it? You can't "gimp" comparisons just so you can say you are "right". Thats stuff my eight year old pulls.

And your assuming that every pc has the exact same hardware and can run every game smoothly and that there are no software compatability issues. Sure assuming everything is the same, then yes 1080p looks better than 720p, but that is not the case especially for pc users as stated before. For console users, there is monogomy amongst the hardware and sure 1080p dark knight looks better than 720p dark knight via netflix. now you introduced pc users which btw wasn't even mentioned in TC's post and want to claim automatic superiority. You cant, for every pc that can max crysis there are 20 others that cannot.

Everyone says omg look at crysis 1080p maxxed!!!! take taht same game with lower resolution/lighting/AA/etc but with 1080p and youll see that it really doesnt look the same.

The people saying 1080 will look better are WRONG, at least in regards to the thread title. Fact of the matter is that most (if not all) of these "HD" Netflix streams are not even mastered in 1080p. It's not like you are getting Blu Ray quality. I believe HD netflix is 720p--some are probably just upscaled dvd res--so upscaling the image from 720p to 1080p is NOT going to magically add more detail. If anything, it is going to create MORE artifacts.

Stop trying so hard just to say you are right.

The same ****ing source will always be better in a higher resolution. You even conceded that, so why the argument? Just so you can defend your consoles? Really?

It is hypocritical to list resolution as an advantage if your not going to allow resolution to be an advantage for the PC camp, even if it is not uniform. Why should I care what your PC can do? I know what mine as well as my consoles can.

Face it, you took offense over the console hypocrisy jab and tried in vain to paint the argument in a favorable light for your beloved consoles. Going as far as devolving a same source resolution comparison into the standard "is PC gaming worth it/better then console gaming" SW thread.

I still find it smoother, more user friendly, and overall a better setup on 360. The subtitles is a nice addition to the PS3, especially during those quieter scenes. 360 will be getting subtitles with the next dashboard update (Nov. 2 i think?) Not sure about the 1080p streaming, though mine is upscaled thru the console anyway.

I have both a PS3 and 360 hooked up to the same TV with Netflix ready on both. Load times and picture quality seem relatively the same after trying out several movies/TV shows.

The real differentiator for me is the search function on the PS3. That's something sorely needed on the 360.

I agree. The PS3 Netflix edges out the 360 with search feature and a bit better picture. I have tried and compared both. Until recently I only used my 360 but now that I don't need a disc in the PS3 it will be my main Netflix device.

That isn't the way it works. As I posted earlier, the source material is only upscaled to 1080p. In this instant, 720p may actually be preferable due to less artifacting.

If the source isn't already HD, then Netflix doesn't stream it in HD at all. Maybe they will actually use 1080p sources. They do have blu-rays to rent so... Do you have a link to show how the streams are mastered? You have piqued my interest.

like i care about who wins a pathetic "war" over material possessions. What I'm saying is that you shouldn't think automatically that console's are insuperior. There is a good cost-effective reason why peopl choose consoles over pc rigs. You should care what other people's pc's can do because guess what? They are the limiting factor when it comes to pc games. Do you think a company is going to make a 20 million dollar game and market it only to a small share of the market that can afford the newer pc parts, or do you think they are going to accomadate the game to varying levels of pc hardware? Its not consoles holding the pc back, its other pc's. If everyone owned the state of the art gaming computer, then devs would not need to worry about making game scale well and could focus on getting the best graphics they can. Why do you think the ps3 can pull off great graphics with dated hardware? Its because devs know what they have to work with and dont have to worry about the millions of different pc components that make up everyones pc, and they know that there is a market whereas graphically intesive games tend to not sell as well with smaller market. Why are you assuming that everything is homogenous, when for pc's its not? I can list more people with sub-par computers then I can people with high end rigs, so which then is the lowest common denominator? Then it becomes only the gaming pc's that are the only ones that can produce 1080p. Consoles then give a larger majority of the market the ability to play high resolution games and to experience high def tv. So now which is better, the inclusive pc which only caters to the smaller elite who can afford to stay current, or the console which delivers a similar if not better experience than its counter-part?

I have netflix on all three consoles. Although I know it isn't necessary, I figured it doesn't cost more to get it on more consoles, so why not try them all out. I found that since the PS3 version went disc free, it is the best of the three. It loads very fast compared to how it used to and compared to the other three consoles, and the picture quality is far superior to the Wii, and superior enough to the XBOX360 to make me prefer PS3 for my Netflix watching. And I did do the comparison on the same 46" 720p TV. I will say that I do still prefer the 360's interface, but everything else on the PS3 is superior enough to make me prefer it.

imagine how bad it is on the Wii? My poor girlfriend only has a Wii and they are stuck with that :o.JuggaloRandall

Actually, my friend used to watch netflix on my computer that is hooked right up to my router, but as soon as Netflix went disc-free on the Wii, he switched to the Wii in his room at my house that is using an unkown Wifi connection. Since he dropped good quality computer netflix streaming for Wii streaming, Im going to guess the quality isnt half bad.

How do you find out which content is offered in 1080p? (And by the way, the 360 gets it's new version of Netflix next week. And it will even let you scale 4:3 content to 16:9, which the PS3 will not.)

With them not having a non disc based option for a year it better be good. It would be quite sad if after they finally get a discless option it works worse then the discless option thats been availabile on the 360 since day one...As well the new upgrade in the 2010 dashboard update is great as well..but I give it about before the end of year that Microsoft gets the new ps3 version on the 360.

I have a PS3 in my living room and my Xbox in my bedroom. I've used instant stream on the Xbox 360 for awhile, and it's been quite good to me. But Netflix on the PS3 is great. The picture quality is better and some shows and movies load in under 2 seconds. Is anyone else here loving the new Netflix update?

Ummm what?

I have been using computers for over 20 years and building them for around 15 years.

Never had my mom buy me a computer even when I was a kid.

My point still stands that 1080P looks better than 720P when comparing the same product.

If I have the choice to play Dead Rising 2 at 720P or Dead Rising 2 at 1080P I will choose 1080P.

You are just trying to come up with some lame excuse.

It doesn't take much today to run 1080P multiplats. Heck 1050P is still much better than 720P.

A 450-500USD PC build is around 3x or more the power of a console.

Crytek, 4A games (Metro 2033), Bohemia Interactive Studios (ARMA II), Square-Enix (FFXIV), GSC Game World (Stalker SoC, CS and Pripyat), Futuremark (Shattered Horizon), The Creative Assembly (Total War series) are just a few devs who have tailored games toward higher-end machines.

The people saying 1080 will look better are WRONG, at least in regards to the thread title. Fact of the matter is that most (if not all) of these "HD" Netflix streams are not even mastered in 1080p. I believe HD netflix is 720p--some are probably just upscaled dvd res--so upscaling the image from 720p to 1080p is NOT going to magically add more detail. If anything, it is going to create MORE artifacts.

How do you know newer streams won't be mastered in 1080P?

Money. Movie studios would make more money if blu ray remained viable.

I didn't want speculation. What would be the point in going out of the way to mention that Netflix will stream 1080P if it only upstreamed 720P streams? The PS3 and 360 would already upscale it anyways - so what would be the point?
