Did you not appreciate the freedom? The scenery? Jeremy Soule's score was impressive, did you not like the soundtrack, even though you thought it got repetitive? Did you not like stumbling across small encampments in the woods? Or becoming a thief? Or a silent assasin? Did you sit down and just watch the sun go up, with some of the wildlife running around, and people waking up from their houses to begin their day? This game, while not perfect, is realy a living, breathing world where you can do whatever you want, any way you want. That's the addiction. If you want a linear story with a very clear way to go at all times, play Kingdom Hearts 2 again.TheCrazed420

The only thing I enjoyed about the game was the Dark Brotherhood, Daedric side quests, "Into a Nightmare Darkly," "A Brush With Death," and the mods... the glorious, glorious mods...

I think I spent so much of my time playing the game because I was fascinated with the Tamriellic lore and mythology. Which is why I need to get Morrowind.

Oh yes... and IIRC, the plots progression does not change. They always stay the same. And most actions in one quest never have any effect on others.

wow, thats seriously one of the most biased things I have ever read.

One who lives in a glass house generally doesn't throw stones.

dont start that crap again, i never said anything bad about any systems, said good things about ps3 and everyone points at me, system wars is halarious

this has nothing to do with the PS3. the game is multiplat.

and don't make me dig up your old posts -- trust me, i've been here much longer than you could imagine and my memory is quite good ;)

No, it's next-gen. ( well, not really, because many games have done that before). But it is overall more immersive because of it.

I decided to rent Oblivion this weekend to see what all the hoopala was about. All I have to say is wow . . . my first foray into Western RPG's was a forgettable one. This game is soooo boring. I felt like I was getting no where and running in the wilderness with nothing to fight for 20 minutes between each place. The graphics are ok but nothing special (nothing like resistance or gears). The story does not draw me in in the least and the physics are terrible. When I run sideways the guy still has the running foward animation. Combat is terrible and the game glitches and jumps all the time. The music also starts over constantly. There are also tons of repeated NPC's and each time I went into Oblivion to close a portal it seemed like the exact same tower. How did this game get game of the year? This is seriously one of the worst games I have ever played. Am I really alone on this? May be I am just playing the broken PS3 version, but seriously, you guys actually like this? The most fun I had was killing towns people and then resisting arrest or stealing horses and running. And the menus are overwhelming and annoying. I would say that this should stay on PC, but I don't think it should stay anywhere. I can not bring myself to even turn it on again . . . Does anyone agree? What does everyone else see that I don't?Imallvol7

I agree with you. its not a terrable game its just really really boring to me. i have three friends that have put well over 200 hours into the game and one has almost beating shivering isles. Honestly though this game is just not that amusing to me its like another hack and slash game but slower paced, and not as exciting.

It's appreciating the nuances and quality of the game, and admiring the things it does that other games don't. Apparently you don't like a game where you aren't killing something every two minutes, by the way you described it in your original post.

You really do need to get Morrowind, its without doubt one of the best games ever IMO, although i'd imagine it'll be quite hard to start playing it now as the graphics and combat system dont hold up to Oblivions, but the lore and freedom is much better in MW ;)

to really understand where he's coming from you have to understand who he is. search his posts, read them - i'm sure it'll become clear.

some people are dyed-in-the-wool fans of consoles, i'm sure you're all aware of this -- fact is TC is a hardcore cow that is used to a very specific type of game, linear-action-adventure. i don't mean this as an insult - just an observation, some people like a very specific type of game and after they get used to it it's probably hard to enjoy and experience something new and different.

personally i'll always buy a console when it's released - and ill judge it personally on its merits (games / accesorries / etc.). i'm always open to new game experiences, and i guess that's why i appreciate oblivion.

and that is so evident by how you stated resistance could have been done on ps2.  Yes, you are a perfect manticore and a leet gamer.

give up on hunting my posts then? you really like to act like a big shot around here. But yes, I do love games like socom, halo, god of war, ninja gaiden, final fantasy, jak and daxter, mario, and ssb , ohh ssb . . . need me some online brawl sooo bad.

you do go far beyond defending it -- attacking other consoles is not defending. despite owning all 3 you do show definite signs of fanboyishness. otherwise i wouldn't be writing this right now, lol. anyways - system ways, not fanboy wars... carry on.

Oblivion was Morrowind with training wheels.  If the level system didn't insult veteran RPGers enough, it was the map travel (you play an RPG for immersion!).

I don't hunt your posts - maybe I just catch you at your worst. you have to admit that given your Topic and inital statement this thread does come off as some serious flamebait. I mean you know the game is appreciated by a wide variety of people - but you're trashing it like you haven't given the game an honest go. Sometimes I find it hard to switch from one 'gaming mode' to the next, maybe you just have to play it a bit more -- there's some excellent gaming in there, trust me.

now to more serious matters --- the new SSB better come out soon and kick some serious ass, i've been hankering for it since it was announced.

exactly, if it was flamebait i wouldnt have asked people for their opinions and explain to me why they like it, and alot of people did. I get what they like and i understand why some people like it. I also wanted to know why oblivion is allowed to get away with so many problems, but i still dont get that. And yes, the new ssb better be awesome. The thing i want to do most though is break the targets. I am sorry to say though i go rid of my wii and will play it on my room mates wii.

You really do need to get Morrowind, its without doubt one of the best games ever IMO, although i'd imagine it'll be quite hard to start playing it now as the graphics and combat system dont hold up to Oblivions, but the lore and freedom is much better in MW ;) Snugenz

I played about 10 hours of the Xbox version and have no quandaries with the graphics... mind you... I really do not care much about graphics. I care about fun games. And from what I experienced in Morrowind was fun. I desperately wanted to get into the Morag Tong but my lock pick skill was nowhere near high enough.

[QUOTE="3picuri3"][QUOTE="Imallvol7"][QUOTE="3picuri3"]

to really understand where he's coming from you have to understand who he is. search his posts, read them - i'm sure it'll become clear.

some people are dyed-in-the-wool fans of consoles, i'm sure you're all aware of this -- fact is TC is a hardcore cow that is used to a very specific type of game, linear-action-adventure. i don't mean this as an insult - just an observation, some people like a very specific type of game and after they get used to it it's probably hard to enjoy and experience something new and different.

personally i'll always buy a console when it's released - and ill judge it personally on its merits (games / accesorries / etc.). i'm always open to new game experiences, and i guess that's why i appreciate oblivion.

Imallvol7

give up on hunting my posts then? you really like to act like a big shot around here. But yes, I do love games like socom, halo, god of war, ninja gaiden, final fantasy, jak and daxter, mario, and ssb , ohh ssb . . . need me some online brawl sooo bad.

I am sorry to say though i go rid of my wii and will play it on my room mates wii.

well you did change the topic -- so i'm guessing you felt it was a bit on the side of flamebait ;)

oblivion does have it's issues, but most good / great games do. i have a feeling you just haven't experienced any cool moments yet in Oblivion -- but sometimes it takes people a long time to get in to it. one of my best friends only just started giving it a serious chance and 10 hours in he bought all the additional content. i dunno, to each their own -- personally i hate the FF and MGS series, and I know people will hammer me for that too, so it's all good (but i've played well over 10 hours of each series, heh.. i love early FF, but hate the new.. mgs has always been meh for me).

no, i just could believe how glitchy and blotchy it was and how i just ran around with nothing to do for a long time. It just isnt my cup of tea.  I mean just trying to navigate the horse around objects got tedious at times.  I will try to give it more time.

I know how you feel man, I was in the same sense with this game. The way I got into was by doing quest. You should have found the fighters guild or Mages guild and signed up, they wouldve sent you on quests and paid you. You would've learnt a great deal about the type of game it is...Its not one of those games where the action is just there like GOW2, where the action is there for you. This game takes brains and patience, so if your not that type of person, this game isn't for you....Overall its a good for the 10-11hrs of been playin it...though gamespot definetly overrates it. Because like you said the glitches and the running animations are horrible

I kinda feel the same way, the game didn't really have the fun factor, more the addiction factor of wanting to complete every quest and being the most powerful being in the world, much like world of warcraft.  I did like some aspects of oblivion like freedom to do whatever you choose but too much freedom just made me roam around aimlessly wondering what to do next after you've done the main quest line, I really felt no need to go on even though I did anyway and it got boring fast. Found myself just playing the game just for xbox live achievements after the main story.

Honestly though this game is just not that amusing to me its like another hack and slash game but slower paced, and not as exciting.ANti_RiCeR

Another hack and slash game? How did yu get this confused with other hack and slash games? And, more importantly, what games do you play where Oblivion is considered a hack and slash games? 'Cause I wanna be playing whatever your playing, if you catch my drift.

I agree 100%.  Our stories are very similar except for the fact that I actually bought it like an idiot believing it was going to be one hellava good RPG  I was only able to take about 4 hours of it before I decided it was nothing but a load of BS!  I still have the game... waiting for my friend who wants to buy a 360 so that I can sell it to him since i'll get more out of it.  i told him it's a crap game in my opinion but he wants to have it anyway... yay for him i guess... but ya, i agree that this game was totally overated.. the last good western rpg/s was fallout 1/2 in my opinion...

This is why games like Morrowmind and Kotor don't sell well. They get high ratings because they do have nice graphics, and very deep gameplay, but the games is just too nerdy. Most Wrpgs are. Just a theory.shungokustasu

KOTOR sold close to 2mln copies and Morrowind sold 4mln on both Pc and xbox combined. Anyway I'm not a big fan of Oblivion ( even from 2006 I prefered NWN2 and Gothic3), it's very dumbed down and the gameplay is a bit broken. Still, with numerous patches I had quite enjoyable time playing it Thief-like (Oscuro+Thieves Arsenal+improved stealth mods+natural enviorements+quarl textures= twice as good Oblivion :) )

I don't own a 360 yet so I can't comment on Oblivion, but I had the same feeling about Morrowind.

Everybody seems to love it, but I just can't seem to find anything I like about it.

I think it's because I need to put more time in it but for me to do that it would have to become more fun than it is now. (to me)

Maybe it's just not my kind of game.

Oblivion is awesome and this is coming from someone who isn't that big an RPG fan. The graphics and sound make this game from a presentation standpoint astounding not to mention the sheer size of the game. Just the amount of stuff to do in the game makes it amazing not to mention the story is pretty interesting as well. Certainly one of the best games of last year along with Gears, Zelda and Company of Heroes.

Its a game that takes a while to get into. Try renting Morrowind I beleive that is a better example of that type of WRPG.

I'm shocked to find out that not every game made is suited for everyone, even if it scores very high.

Oblivion was Morrowind with training wheels. If the level system didn't insult veteran RPGers enough, it was the map travel (you play an RPG for immersion!). Pintbitter
Winner! Really, this game is such garbage- not because it's not like JRPGs, but for the simple fact that it's NOT an RPG. There is no role for you to play. Want to solve quests without violence/death? Good luck! Then, you get these nubcakes telling you that you're just "not levelling your character correctly." Really? For such an "open" game, I didn't realize that there was a strict way you have to level to enjoy the game. So the game is NOT open or free at all- it's about as much of an RPG as GTA3 was. Yes, you can go wherever you want, but there's really only one solution to the problem (which is violent). Now, I grant that not EVERY quest can be this way, but if I need to obtain a key from someone, why can't I persuade them into giving it to me? (and don't get me started on the minigames!) The lack of choices in the game are what killed it (probably because most casuals can't handle REAL choices). Suppose a character asks you to steal a book from someone else in a guild and to not tell the guildmaster. Your quest giver needn't fear- you don't even have the ability to tell the guildmaster, no matter how much you may want to do the right thing (perhaps you're playing an extremely moral character). Your choice is limited to a) accept the quest, and do exactly what they want, or b) don't do the quest. Ooo, the choices! My head is spinning from sifting through the options. I could keep going with all the other flaws in the game, but I'll stop here.

yes you summed it up quite nicely. People should also read the site about the stupid AI in Oblivion as well (Forgot the URL maybe someone can post it).

I was only a casual fan of oblivion until shivering Isles, now for some reason, I don't want to go back to the original oblivion world when I'm in shivering Isles.
