NPD Numbers Are In: Xbox 360 Leads Industry

By: César A. Berardini - "Cesar"Share This Article Jan. 17th, 2008 5:11 pm We received NPD's 2007 U.S. video game industry sales report less than an hour ago and it took Microsoft only a few minutes to send their comments on the subject:

Xbox 360 Drives the Video Game Console Industry in 2007: NPD data released today confirms consumers spent more dollars on Xbox 360 in 2007, with more than $13.7 billion in total consumer spending. Xbox 360 won 2007 with $4.8 billion in total consumer spend compared to Wii with $3.5 billion and PlayStation 3 with $2.2 billion. This wraps up a historic year, with NPD reporting consumers have spent nearly 45 percent of total industry figures on Xbox 360.

Here is a quick snapshot of what is driving revenue for Xbox 360, based on the latest reports from NPD and Microsoft data:

  • XBOX 360 WIDENS THE GAP OVER PS3 WITH CONSOLE SALES: According to NPD, Xbox 360 sold 1.3 million consoles in December alone, and has steadily widened the gap between Sony's PlayStation 3 console sales. In December, NPD stated that Sony sold 798,000 PS3 hardware units. Since PS3's launch in November 2006, Xbox 360 has outsold PS3 by nearly 2:1 on average, bringing a total U.S. Xbox 360 install base of 9.2 million consoles, compared to and installed base of 7.4 million Wii consoles and 3.3 million PS3 consoles.

  • GAMES DRIVE INDUSTRY GROWTH: Xbox 360 robust games portfolio spans across the highest-ranked AAA titles to the largest collection of "Everyone" and "Teen" rated games. According to NPD, of the top 20 best-selling titles in 2007 for this generation, 11 were on Xbox 360; while only seven were sold on the Wii and two sold on the PS3.

    • NPD reported that this holiday's leading multiplatform blockbusters continue to sell better on Xbox 360:
      • "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" for Xbox 360 was the leading game last month with 1.5 million copies sold, outselling the PS3 version nearly 3:1.
      • "Assassin's Creed" for Xbox 360 was the fourth best selling title, having sold 894,000 units. It outsold the PS3 version more than 2:1.
      • "Guitar Hero III" outsold the PS3 nearly 2:1, having sold 625,000 copies.
      • "Rockband" continues to rock the charts, selling 463,000 units for the Xbox 360 platform, compared to 174,000 units for the PS3
    • To date, 33 third party games on Xbox 360 hit the top 10 list across all consoles compared to five third party games on PS3, and four on Wii. These results confirm that third party partners create better games and reap more sales on Xbox 360 than any other platform.
    • In its fourth month on the market, Halo 3 continued its strong performance and was the sixth best selling title in December, selling another 742,000. In 2007, NPD projects that Halo 3 has sold 4.8 million units in the U.S. since its launch in September.
    • Xbox 360 continues to lead in number of games sold per console, setting another record with an attach rate of 7.0 games per console.

  • XBOX LIVE SETS NEW HEIGHTS: Xbox LIVE's network is 10 million members strong and growing, achieving membership goals six months ahead of schedule. Only on Xbox LIVE can members experience the largest catalog of on-demand, high-definition content in the U.S., including movies and television shows from our most recent partners: Disney-ABC Television Group and MGM Studios.

We're not slowing down in 2008. The next versions of powerhouse franchises like "Grand Theft Auto," "Resident Evil" and sports games like "Madden", "FIFA", and "Pro Evolution Soccer" open up a new arena for game play on Xbox 360. This year we will make great strides toward improving our brand appeal to consumers interested in more physical game play. With titles like "Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock," "Rock Band" and "Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action" we're creating interactive experiences on Xbox 360 for the entire family.

Wow....just wow!!

I think to show the impact of the attach rate you'd have to compare it to both Wii and PS3's ataach rate and compare the three and than find out if the 360's attach rate is truly that staggering.

I also doubt RE5 coming in 2008.

Wow, what propaganda. It's a marketing pep rally from an XBox fansite (terms like "open up a new arena for game play" spring to mind). What did you expect to see?

I like that every single title listed at the bottom of the article aside from "Scene It" is available on the PS3.

I am not surprised by this, I have all three consoles and have 3 time as many 360 games as ps3 and wii game combined. Its not necessarily that the exclusives are better on the 360 but I think people prefer multiplats on 360 because of LIVE and achievements,

Funny how some of you were just saying that Nintendo fanboys were all about sales and lo and behold, you MS fanboys are talking about sales.

Just goes to show that even though you argue about games, sales are just as important.

A good attach rate and a solid online community go hand in hand. It improves the gaming experience. That's the only reason I care. Now cheer up buttercup! :)

That paragraph pretty much sums up who will be gettting the best third party support. Developers go with the money, like it or not, that's how it is.

Ignore him. He thinks anything that any product that Microsoft has a hand in brings the world one step closer to the apocalypse, and it and its users should be treated as such. It doesn't matter what the topic is, he will make some anti-360 statement. I'm jsut glad he doesn't represent all Sheep...

Hey, if Sony fans want something to brag about, they have complete control over attach rates. They just have to put their money where their mouth is and buy every title on the shelf. Let's see how committed they are to this premise. )

Seriously, though, what do you expect when the day brings more good news for Nintendo and MS and more bad news for Sony? Selling 7 games for each console out the door is just insane - I know some people that buy a console and only get 7 games for it, EVER. The "game of the month" phenomenon is alive and well on 360 - I know I go through 1-2 games a month on it, and I'm not the only one.

I'm side-stepping it because I don't buy it. I'd like to know how they calculate their attach rate, and what they include in it. The 2 games that come with it? The 5 games bundled with the arcade unit? How is it a "record"? Which record did it break? Highest attach rate ever, highest attach rate in shortest timeframe, highest attach rate this gen?

That whole article sounds like it could be a memo from XBox PR department. "Keep up the good work guys!" It just sounds like marketing spiel to me, which is why I disregard it. It's kind of like the stickers at 360 demo kiosks that say "Play the greatest games lineup ever!" Am I to believe the 360's first year line-up is better than the lineups of the SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1, Dreamcast, PS2 line-ups over their entire lifespan? It just sounds like BS to me.

The difference is software sales is better because it shows developers there is a huge attach rate they can rely on. The hardware sales the sheep constantly show off gave developers a false impression. They thought it meant all gamers were moving to Wii. It turns out casuals are buying the system but are not buying that many games. They played Wii Sports until the novelty wore off, played a couple more games, and to the closet it goes. The devs made Wii games but the games didnt sell like they sold on the Xbox 360. So this means the Xbox 360 might have a better future in 2008/2009 with third-party while Nintendo will continue to suffer with 3rd Party (like always)

Ignore him. He thinks anything that any product that Microsoft has a hand in brings the world one step closer to the apocalypse, and it and its users should be treated as such. It doesn't matter what the topic is, he will make some anti-360 statement. I'm jsut glad he doesn't represent all Sheep...

Wow, where did I ever say that MS would bring the world one step closer to the apocalypse? And isn't what I say true? You MS fanboys always say that sales don't matter, but when the sales game is in your corner, it's hooray for MS and MS is about to bring heaven down to earth. Seriously, stop being hypocrites.

All one has to do is look at your posting history to see that you view the 360 as the anti-christ. And there you go again. First, you accuse a person who owns an Atari 2600, NES, SNES, N64, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, a DS Lite, and a rather dusty PSP a 'Microsoft fanboy', but you go on and make false claims that said fangroup constantly say that sales don't matter, except in this case. Seriously, try to be a Wii supporter, as apposed to an anti-microsoft biggot.

Funny how some of you were just saying that Nintendo fanboys were all about sales and lo and behold, you MS fanboys are talking about sales.

Just goes to show that even though you argue about games, sales are just as important.

flashattackfina

Link? and not just a few instances of people trashing sales. I want you to provide proof that MOST lemmins put down sales.

I see. So basically you're saying that when others talk about sales, it's LOL at them, but when you talk about sales, it's time to flex your muscles. Very nice. Keep at it :)

Wow...you sound bitter and a tad jaded. Chill buddy....this is a time to celebrate!

I just find it hilariously hypocritical of MS fanboys to be cheering for sales when they put down the sales of the other consoles. Me bitter? Hardly :)

Link? I want to see where all these lemmings are that are "putting down" sales. lol.

dude there are tons of lemmings putting down sales of another console think about

That's the thing though. The way they word it, it sounds like they are talking about the number of total games sold and total 360's sold and some sort of division. It's all so vague, which is why I don't give it much credence.

I work in a big retailer that sells a ton of consoles, and even big spenders aren't walking out with 7 games, there is absolutely no way that is the average of everyone that buys a console. That's saying that for every few people that walk out of a store with just Halo and Madden, there is some other guy walking out with a dozen games. That's just not happening. I want to know how they calculated that number before I get all excited about it.

If you want to play list wars, then I own an Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, GC, DS Lite, and a Wii. Keep your accusations to yourself as well.

As for MS, I'm just annoyed at all the MS fanboys who keep overhyping and overrating it. I guess I'm just trying to balance out things a bit, although I'm doing it mostly to poke fun at people more than I'm being serious. Plus, you still have no argument about what I said and continue to attack me.

I've made an argument trwice. It's not that hard to read. You can make unbacked claims about 360 owners constantly saying sales don't matter, so why can't I make claims that Wii owners only adopted the 'sales matter' vibe when their console of choice started dominating in said field?

A attach rate of seven means that for evryone that owns the console they have an average of seven games for it. Not that they bought them all at the exact same time they purchased the console.

Not a single thread made by an MS fan stating that sales don't matter. And one thread doesn't count as evidence that the entire fanbase has such a mentality. You may accuse me of 'turning a blind eye', but maybe you should question whether you are in fact seeing things that aren't even there.

PhoebusFlows

Ya you can't make **** up. You don't know how much Wii owners are playing. Maybe they playing Wii Sports every day. Or RE4 or GH3 or Ninty games. Which have all sold fantastically well.

I want to know how they calculated that number before I get all excited about it.

This is how they do it.

First, they are counting games that are bundled in with the Xbox. This includes all the Forza 2 and Marvel (I belive it was this game) bundles. The Halo 3 bundle also counts. This inflates the numbers.

Secondly, the install base is not growing as fast. This is not to say they aren't selling anything. This increases the attach ratio. For example, in Japan, they've only sold 500k consoles, but the attach rate is about 5.6 or so. Those who have a console will continue to buy games. If there are no infusion of new console purchasers, then the attach rate will remain pretty high.

Lastly, they do have a user base that buys a lot of games. That does help the attach rate. However, if they had more casuals, the attach rate would fall. They haven't captured that market yet and it's the one they really want to capture.

One thing they don't count is arcade games. So if anyone says this, then they are wrong.

Wow, what propaganda. It's a marketing pep rally from an XBox fansite (terms like "open up a new arena for game play" spring to mind). What did you expect to see?

I like that every single title listed at the bottom of the article aside from "Scene It" is available on the PS3.

excelR83

Yet they are being bought for the 360. Maybe konami and square should take notes as to which platform is the prefered gaming. I also like how the site that provides good Sony news is valid, yet the site that shows good MS nes is spreading propoganda...

They aren't saying that people are buying the console with seven games. The attach rate means that each 360 owner has purchased seven games on average.

It can be calculated pretty easily, I'd think. Just take the total 360 software sales, and divide it by the total 360 hardware sales. Bam, attach rate.

I mean, this is marketing stuff, so there's definitely a lot of hyberbole, but the numbers themselves are probably accurate.

Hey, since you like looking at history, maybe you can do a search for other threads since there have been plenty of times that MS fanboys have attacked sales. Arguments such as:

"You can't play sales"

"Sales don't determine the best"

Etc.

Plenty of these arguments have been used. Like I said, I'm nobody's personal Google. I'm just too apathetic about doing any searching right now :)

And I can find posts of Wii fans saying that game quality doesn't matter. I guess I'll start filling every pro-Wii topic about how Wii owners don't care about games, because clearly the voices of a few equate tot he voices of all the fanbase. ^_^
