What do you prefer, and why?
I think this gen WRPGs have been a lot better than JRPGs, and overall I prefer them.
This topic is locked from further discussion.
Overal I enjoy them equally, but many recent (1998+) WRPGs aren't what I'd call fun.

Mass Effect and Dragon Age aren't fun?

Mass Effect and Dragon Age aren't fun?
Dragon Age (on the PS3) wasn't fun at all, and I haven't played Mass Effect yet but I dislike shooter mechanics in games.
WRPG's Here is what is wrong with JRPGs 1 Go from Point A to Point B Linear Story etc. Just plain Linear 2 No variety in the gameplay at all unless picking your attack is variety 3.On Average the story is a full notch bellow WRPG stories 4. Music not as good 5. Being in a "Party" 6. Not being able to kill gaurds and cause complete havoc 7. Playing the Goody two shoes and not given the option to be like a darth vaderish anti hero 8. Less Replayability 9. Once you do beat the game you cant do much expect grind so you have to new game plus and go through all the dialouge again for the same story 10. Character portraits for end game cutscenes instead of characters talking Banjo_KongfooieI agree mostly but the music in jrpg's is usually better except for in Mass Effect.
I love Bioware and find their RPGs to be some of the very very best, but overall I'd say JRPGs. Two of my three favorite games are Demon's Souls and Chrono Trigger (for the rest of my top 10 see my blog :P), accompanied by Legend of Zelda: OoT, with Pokemon Silver down at #9, so you can tell I like JRPGs a bit better.
But once again, some WRPGs are great, Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect are masterpieces. I'd like to play Mass Effect right now but I'm trapped inside since I should be studying right now .

I'd agree those are better than FFXIII (if that's what you meant), but they are not not better than Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI. Look at that, I have an opinion. And what's more? It's generally the opinion of critics that these are some of the best RPGs ever.definetly JRPG's the only WRPG's I really enjoyed were oblivion and Borderlands (although I really dont count this as a WRPG tbh its really just a shooter with a lot of added depth.)

Why not point out some JRPGs this gen better than those WRPGs listed?
i dont want to try to start an opinion war here, but...demons souls, persona 3/4, strange journey, valkyria chronicles, TWEWY, etcAnd here's where everybody expects me to chime in with my usual spiel - WRPGs just offer better role playing experiences. You actually tailor your character's traits and attitudes to your own design, scultping your identity in the world, as it should be.
But let me also emphasise, I don't have anything against JRPGs as games in general. I mean just like I greatly loved playing Batman AA, Assassin's Creed 2 and such, there's nothing wrong with playing a game where the character has been pre-designed. But that hardly makes for what role playing is or should be.
Now, have at you, Yandere and Jethrovegas :P:P

Yeah that's not biased at all. It's pretty unbelieveable that someone feels that strongly about 2 sub-genres to make something like this, too much time on hand I suppose.
Is there some kind of law against playing both WRPGs and JRPGs that I'm not aware of?

Actually I'm doing this while simultaneously doing a review for a final and catching a little bit of the NHL playoffs
I like WRPGs, but to be honest I don't really like Bioware games :?
I also like JRPGs, but don't really like Square-Enix games.
As far as I know though there seems to be more high quality, and unique WRPGs out there. Lotta turn-based combat JRPGs with the standard roster of incredibly cliche characters in it. I love when they spice up the formula and/or take a unique approach to the genre.......like ActRaiser for instance. That was a kick ass game by Enix.
http://project-apollo.net/text/rpg.html WRPGs FTW! :DNerkcon
Haha, I found this to be surprisingly true in some games.
Anyway, I prefer jrpg's to western one.
i prefer Jrpg for stories.....but on Wrpg just gameplay(some story are just need to be fixed...too mature, more 18+ scene and too much serious business....western joke its really boring or feel like watching a tv series and shooters make me bored)
i like JRPG
WRPG´s ,of course.
I enjoyed JRPG´s once upon the time but since they started put spectacle above the gameplay and storytelling I was pretty much done with them.
Also,VA in JRPG´s is just terrible in most cases, full of cheesy and over emotional dialogue that completely ruins the immersion for me.

4. Music not as good Subjective, and I'd say entirely wrong myself, Mass Effect and Chrono Trigger are two of my favorite RPGs and ME doesn't even compare in music
Oh and I mean Dialogue is much better in WRPG's
Okay that's true, especially in Bioware games, movie quality dialogue. Clearly not what you meant though.
5. Being in a "Party" Ummmm well I'm playing MAss Effect right now and uhhh well.... I'm kinda fighting with a party.... I was also just playing Demon's Souls, a JRPG and I'm kinda alone in it....
In Mass Effect it is squad based dude and the people in your party are interactable oh and Demon Souls is ARPG
Ooooookay so just because it's called a squad instead of a party that's better. Serious flaw in logic. You can talk to your party members in Chrono Trigger too by the way bro.... also Mass Effect is technically an ARPG, but we count it as a WRPG. Therefore, I can count Demon's Souls as a JRPG, since it is in fact a JAPENESE ROLE PLAYING GAME. Doesn't stand for JAPANESE TURN BASED ROLE PLAYING GAME. If that was the criteria of course WRPGs would win, they aren't limited while JRPGs are.
6. Not being able to kill gaurds and cause complete havoc Oh so you're a casual gamer who needs violence and a big sandbox to have fun? Explains your opinions...
And you like a game holding your hand telling you how to play or what your character is like?
I like good games, if they're an open world sandbox and it does it well, I like it, if it's a linear game and is also well done, I like it. Games don't need to be open world.
7. Playing the Goody two shoes and not given the option to be like a darth vaderish anti hero JUST LIKE ALMOST EVERY GAME IN EXISTENCE *facepalm*
Nah you can go rogue in Elderscrolls Fallout and Bioware games
Congratulations, three different series...... I'm sure there are at least 3 JRPGs with moral choice
8. Less Replayability WHAT? WHY? Most JRPGs have a New Game +, most WRPGs are a one time playthrough and you're done
ME1 and 2 have New Game + and Elderscrolls doesnt need one
Okay then, so that makes JRPGs and WRPGs equal there, it doesn't make the WRPG win......
9. Once you do beat the game you cant do much expect grind so you have to new game plus and go through all the dialouge again for the same story Wait... so that's not replayability? I don't understand why the whole moral choice is needed to be a good game. Are you saying a game requires moral choice to be good? I guess the only good games on Earth are a select few games that let you choose to be good or evil. By the way same exact thing happens in Demon's Souls.... so there's one JRPG with moral choice.
10. Character portraits for end game cutscenes instead of characters talking .......That's not even worth going against. Neither always true or meaningful.
In many games its true
It's true sometimes, but what's that even matter? Starcraft was often pictures of people talking instead of full fledged cutscenes (although there were some cutscenes, just like in JRPGs....), so are you saying that means Starcraft is a bad game?
Banjo_Kongfooie
You're determined to display blatant ignorance in every thread today aren't you? Go go go you're close to your goal!
Many are true are you denying jrpgs rob you of freedom?
Rob me of my freedom? Why do games NEED freedom? At least 90% of the greatest games did not give you total freedom of choice and movement. JRPGs are more linear, but what's wrong with that? Linearity isn't a con, it's just a type of gameplay. I like inFAMOUS and I like Uncharted 2. One is free roaming, one is linear. That doesn't make the free roaming one the better game.
I love both JRPGs and WRPGs and play plenty of both. I only chose to vote for JRPGs because I knew it would be losing and wanted to give it help.
By the way if we're judging by this gen alone, WRPGs by far actually. Demon's Souls is my favorite RPG this gen, but that's about it for great JRPGs this gen to me.
