"No more 3rd party storage for you" said Major nelson in his blog.. which received a large number of angry comments from fans.

but what x360 fans here think about this move? support / angry / indifferent?

MS blocking 'unauthorized' 360 storage devices

Major Nelson has warned that next week's 360 update will see the BLOCKING of 'unauthorized' Xbox 360 storage devices. By this we think he means unofficial hard-drives and also Datel's memory unit but time will tell.

Here's exactly what the Major said at his online blog:

[quote="majornelson"]

When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360.

If you've moved your profile or saved games onto one to "back it up," you'd better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update.

If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games.

If you need help identifying officially licensed Xbox 360 storage devices or accessories you can read more about the licensed accessories program on Xbox.com

That's how it goes...people knew who they were dealing with when the bought the price of admission.

I mean, if I'm seriously trying to bypass my console to use external cheaper memory, and using Datel's device to circumvent the console...maybe I should reconsider what I'm doing. Maybe I should become a multiconsole owner at that point.

Not true. We've seen map packs, expansions and other types of content only available via DL, and most of them are well over 100mb.

My 20GB HDD is nearing its limit and with some upcoming DLC I have to download, I might need to purchase a larger HDD.

They are pretty cheap on ebay and craigslist, I upgraded from 20 to a 120 for $40. But anyway, I don't see how Lems, or 360 owners are lashing out, they are unauthorized for a reason.

Why would anybody use third party storage devices? Why would anybody need it, 360 comes with a ton of memory, and the HDDs as well. I didn't even know there were third-party storage devices.

This sounds like a joke and a half. So the 360 is now recieveing "updates" that take away from the functionailty of the system? This is going to cause alot of annoyance, and I doubt it will last.

I don't like this at all.

I'm definately not going to defend this

Microsoft are too restrictive with plug and play devices, alternative media centres andpropriety formats for the Xbox360.

I want more options and choices other then what devices they provide or approve-I'm looking at you Wireless adaptor, lack of MP4, FTP between USB devices..

I actually hope Sony or Apple really push their respective platforms or console's multimedia functions to really stand out to really kick MS upside the head.

The PS3is a waaayyy bettermultimedia device then the Xbox360 and for a good reason as it's more open and flexible.

I also hope Apple gets more involved in the gaming industry to really shake up MS.

MS needs to do better then this cr*p if they want to win the Living room.

heretrix

I understand why they do it as a lot of the money is made from software, services and accessories.

However I am miffed if they take out features from a console I already paid for and then get me to pay for it later on if they implement it.

I don't care about lease agreements or that stuff and consumers needn't have to worry about that stuff everytime they have to purchase something or have an army of laywers to explain to them the lease agreements.

It just creates an unfriendly image on Microsoft's part and it's just MS's way of monopolising the platform environment.

Just like Windows E.U. forced MS to ship Windows 7 without I.E. that's good because more importantly you were given a choice to use other programs on the O.S.

I'm right there too buddy!

I've already filled a 20gb HDD, and am filling my 120 GB fast with HD content Games, Demos, video and DLC!

That was fine I use a XSata device to store and backup the Xbox360 on my PC

If anyone knows about NAS devices and home movies will know what I'm talking about.

I use a Lynkisis Media Hub and currently have close to 900GB of private home use Movies, music and PC backups on it.

A 2 TB external HD to backup the NAS device and the PCs and other multimedia devices around the house.

It is very very hadny to access any of the Storage devices on the network and stream movies from them

Now they want to close of certain Storage devices off from the Xbox360 and am forced to pay for their overpriced storage devices.

Agreed. I like to save some games on the HDD, but I can only save one at a time because I have only 3 GB left on my 20 GB. Between game saves, DLC, and movies and demos, I'm running out of space.

I see exactly what they are doing and I am an ardent supporter of the Xbox360, but this is beyond game consoles.

It is about consumer choice and it's just another one of their monopolistic tactics.

It's stifle competition, innovation, creativity and just createsa bad image.

This is pretty serious for me, if MS continues this I will speak with my wallet and get only DLC for the PS3 or PC and only use the Xbox360 for it's exclusives games.

There is a reason why a lot of X360 fans are lashing out and this simply isn't funny on MS's part.

Well it's notreally an attack on the consumer, but it is a poor attempt at stopping piracy. For one thing people found a way to manipulate the 360 in the first place in order to allow for piracy, and I'm pretty sure they can get around this. The easiest way to get around it would be to not be connected to the internet. What I'm worried about is what do they mean by unauthorized storage devices? Does this apply to all devices for all files or just for profiles and such?

And this is why I only buy first party accesories for my game systems. Sure they may cost more, but they're guaranteed to work and they will never not be supported. I still have my 20GB HDD from my original 360 and when I do upgrade eventually I was already planning on buying the official HDD anyway so I don't really care if they stop support for third party storage devices.

How do I feel? I emailed Xbox support my feelings on this. Never saw the point of starting a thread here about a problem I have with a console maker. I take the problem to them. I said, I enjoy many of your products and features but your storage pricing and policy against 3rd party storage is ridiculous. I have historically bought 3rd party games for 360 but as my space dwindles and I can upgrade my PS3 storage for a about the same price and 4 times the space, I may be moving my purchases to where I can fit them. Be interesting to see if I get a response.

It is "their" system, not yours. If they don't want you to do something on it they have every right to stop you.

AnnoyedDragon

I am well aware of that.

They lease the console to you.

People however have not given up the right to complain, they are however given up the right to abuse or modify the device in their own way.

No one has actually the right to take away people's rights to complain- the very first ammendment.

However this does create aBAD relationship with sellers and consumers. It's what MS has been getting in trouble for many years about.

They work to create an Image , choice and trust and then they get rid ofthat bycircumventing it under the guise of security issues and piracy.

Anyway I am glad that E.U. has challenged MS's monopolistic methods by keepin the O.S. open and free to choose other programs and I'm also glad that China is really forcing MS to lower their prices, compete more and actually accept alternatives and not just sit on their laurels because of the rampant piracy and knock offs.

Anyway after what is all said and done it's up to consumers to vote with their wallets, pirates to keep MS honest and to be able to choose alternatives.

i.e.

Apples' O.S. and Macs, Sony's PS3, Linux Ubuntu, Google Chrome, Google Wave.

The reason why I'm also miffed is because I just got done watching the documentary "Who killed the electric car" and I can draw quite a few parrallels with this.

Microsoft killed choice.

This is bad huh? How about when a console maker releases a new system where you have to re-buy all your hardcopy game via digital format in order to play them on said new system? MS is trying to carve out the pirates. Sony just flat our screwed over everyone who invested into the PSP for the last 4 years.

It's Microsoft using their underhanded tactics again and it is anti-consumer.

No ability to choose!

I thought MS was sincere in changing their image a bit and create better relations with consumers when they entered the gaming market, but it seems to me

Microsoft are rearing that all too familiar ugly head and they are fat and bloated.LOL being a bit dramatic here.

Anyway I think it's actually good news the way Windows 7 is being handled in China.

It does not make much sense to do this mid generation

its kicking alot of consumers in the nuts

a workaround would be to only hvae this feature on new models of the 360 or simply wait till the next generation

[QUOTE="SpruceCaboose"][QUOTE="MethodManFTW"]Wow, what a ridiculous thing. That sucks majorly.... but I guess Bill Gates is super rich for a reason.MethodManFTW
Seeing as Bill Gates is not really with MS anymore....

he is still the largest individual share holder so i bet he has some input..................

No, he has nothing to do with day to days at MS. Hasn't for at least a year. He focuses on his Foundation.

[QUOTE="cainetao11"]How do I feel? I emailed Xbox support my feelings on this. Never saw the point of starting a thread here about a problem I have with a console maker. I take the problem to them. I said, I enjoy many of your products and features but your storage pricing and policy against 3rd party storage is ridiculous. I have historically bought 3rd party games for 360 but as my space dwindles and I can upgrade my PS3 storage for a about the same price and 4 times the space, I may be moving my purchases to where I can fit them. Be interesting to see if I get a response.AdmiralBison

It actually really pushes MS to be worth their weight and work to becompetitive.

I hear you. But I was never given authority to say what is right and what is wrong when it comes to the actions or practices of others. I just decide if I want to play ball with them or not. I enjoy some MS franchises a lot like Halo, Gears and Fable. But I can start buying most games, and mos of my purchases are multiplat, on my PS3 and ust my 360 for those select franchises. Doubt it will hurt a mega company like MS, but at least I got to tell them how I feel on this.

This is bad huh? How about when a console maker releases a new system where you have to re-buy all your hardcopy game via digital format in order to play them on said new system? MS is trying to carve out the pirates. Sony just flat our screwed over everyone who invested into the PSP for the last 4 years.

yes definately. This is beyond games, and this should be at the heart of all gamers regardless if your a fanboy, Lemming, Cow, Hermit, Sheep, Hardcore or casual. Other industries like automobiles -when the viable alternative electric car was squashed because it would eat into the Oil and car manufacturers profits. Movie industry- where they stifle creative movies and slap them with general ratings to maximise exposure for box office earnings. Now these kind of things are happening in our industry. I was thinking With the PSP you can still use large SD cards though right to to download games onto? and buy larger ones as a storage solution? It's been a while since I've done that, but I would be royally pissed if they got rid of that feature to actually use seperate storage alternatives and then have to purchase the PSP GO to play stored games. I'm really think that pirates are actually important in keeping the companies honest and competitive, The ones who really lose out are the consumers and the actuall developers and middle people who work to earn the money when making these games. It's like a war on consumers!

Hmmm, this has nothing to do with MS being evil. It's MS's choice when it comes to its console. Doesn't mean I don't think the accessory prices for the 360 aren't outrageously overpriced.

What little sense you make. How did Sony screw anyone over? I'm not in support of the PSPgo and pretty much wouldn't mind if it failed but your claim is nothing short of false. The PSP can do everything the PSPGo can do, well except for bluetooth. Just close your eyes and imagine it doesn't exist and you'll be fine.
