ok i dont understand why Halo 3 have sold more copies then MGS4... i read at gamespot that halo 3 was on top 10 in NPD sells. Is this true or not? And is this because of the Xbox LIVE or is it that Halo is more popular franchise?. I have been MGS fan and halo fan for years now, but its just weird that MGS4 fails at this point...

Halo, much like Mario, GTA, and CoD appeal to kids and casuals.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is only liked by true gamers, and gamers that actually buy quality (check review scores before purchasing, etc)

Another reason why Halo has sold more is most likely because it was exclusive to PS3, which is not bad, but take a look at Uncharted 2, it only sold 1 million copies, MGS4 is a gem in a bunch of exclusives on PS3, in the sense that it has sold more than most PS3 exclusives.

Halo has a wider appeal. (Super) Soldiers killing aliens is like the premier copy/paste sci-fi scenario. Throw in the fact that Halo is an accessible shooter, with a story that really doesn't require you to utilize brain cells, has fun, fast and accessible gameplay and a cardboard cut-out "cool" hero, and you have a wide appeal game. MGS on the other hand is very story centric and convoluted, requiring you to pay attention, is in the stealth genre which is pretty niche, and is far less accessible. Not to mention that MGS4 is strongly inteerconnected with the previous games' stories. For instance, you could jump into Halo 3 and not miss a beat of the story, but with MGS4, prior knowledge is practically a must, thus making it less accessible. Also, Halo's story is the type you can recap real quick and get someone up to date, MGS's story isnt. Sure you could give a person the general gist, but there are so many little details that they would miss out on, that are important. Halo is about the big picture, and in MSG the devil's in the details.

Halo 3 had quite some huge marketing behind.

That, and a larger 360 fanbase.

why is it weird to you?

Regardless of What System Wars here thinks Halo is a very good well made game and has a lot of replay value.

MGS4 still sold well.

Case in point I'm starting to think why should evelopers waste their time and resources if they are going to make exclusive. Do it for the Xbox360 over the PS3 if they have too

They both are similair in running games(this is till be debated)

multiplats often sell better on Xbox360 over the PS3- Fallout 3, GTA4, MW2 and look and perform better too,

Halo's SP story line seems to be good enough to spawn some pretty good novels that was a best seller.

Halo's story has some pretty deep conotations such as religion, origins of life and isn't too bogged down by a convoluted as it is easy to follow.

ha ha. This idea of an 'elite gamer' I simply don't understand why it's a big deal.

I always though an elite gamer wouldn't suffer insecurities and actually buy and enjoy their games.

I'm starting to think that "casual" gamers are the true gamers, since they don't care and actually buy and have fun with their games then being "Hardcore" and trying to persuade others to buy their games and downplay other games. IMO

Did he ever say that? That wasn't even implied. He said they appeal to kids and casuals, not ONLY to kids and casuals, and he also didn't say that anyone who likes or plays the games are kids or casual.

Then he said that only true gamers would play MGS4, which would leave out kids and casual gamers.

Nowhere does he call you or anyone else here a kid or casual gamer.

Okay, he implied that those games aren't quality, which has absolutely nothing to do at all ever and never will have anything to do with the game appealing to a wider audience and the fact that MGS4 doesn't appeal to as wide an audience.

But why bring up both the audience of the game and the quality if you aren't relating them? Thats kinda the point they tried to make. You don't mention quality and audience unless they're related, in your point of view anyhow.

MGS4 was made for it's fanbase, while Halo is made for casuals. That's not to say non-casuals can't play Halo, but there is almost no learning curve to it, making it really accesible to casual gamers (who eat it up).

MGS4, however, was made and developed for the fanbase that the series has already hooked. The game wasn't developed for newcomers to the series, because it is a direct sequel to the story. It's be like watching/reading the last "Lord of the Rings" movie/book, before enjoying the previous ones: you aren't going to know what the heck is going on.

Halo on the other hand, has such a small story behind it (based only on the games, no novels. I shouldn't have to read a book to get a story for a video game), it's easy to catch up newcomers with what's going on. Tie it together with simple gameplay, and you have yourself a game that will sell to millions of casuals.

I know vgchartz is looked down upon but going by their numbers MGS2 sold 5.58 and MGS3 sold 4.07 million.

Now compare that to MGS4 which sold 4.39 million on the ps3 which has sold alot less than the ps2 and you really can't complain too much about it's sales.

^How so? I mean, can't go wrong with Halo's MP, which more than makes up for its weak SP. Arbiterisl33t69

If this was last year, then this statement would be correct.

However now, the multiplayer has been ruined by the awesome (sarcastic) Halo community to the point where not even social is fun anymore.

MGS4 had a pretty decent multiplayer, I don't see why people didn't like it. I think it could've been great if more people had played it but it was hurt by the lack of a community. It would take minutes for me to get into a match.

MGS4 offline is a great movie, and I would rather watch it than play Halo 3's single player.

Great movie + decent MP > average SP + bad MP

It's sad, because Halo is actually a good game. If it had a good community like Counter Strike, TF2 (PC), L4D or SOCOM the game would be amazing.

However, a community makes or breaks a game, so Halo is now on the same level as The Darkness.

Whoa now, this I have to disagree with. Counter Strike is anything but an example of good community. The CS community is mostly comprised of the internet's worst and elitists. That being said, Halo 3's community isn't nearly as bad as its made out to be. Most of the time, the real bad crowd sticks to the MLG playlist or the real "competitive" ranked playlists. Playing in social playlists usually isn't bad, at least no worse than most online games.

[QUOTE="Skittles_McGee"] Actually it was implied. He mentioned MGS4 is only liked by gamers that buy quality, which in itself implies the former games are not quality. It was very much so implied.Skittles_McGee

People don't know how to infer.

Half the time people type stuff on here and imply something completely different and a lot of people don't even realize it.

[QUOTE="Arbiterisl33t69"]^How so? I mean, can't go wrong with Halo's MP, which more than makes up for its weak SP. Skittles_McGee

Yes they are elitist, but from my experiences they haven't ruined the gameplay. You can get on CS and actually play a game, it's pretty difficult to get on Halo and play a game without boosting ruining it, whether it be kids who just sit there, kids who commit suicides (in a playlist like MLG, that takes away from the overall score), kids who do quit or kids who purposely let the other team kill them.

I'm a big Halo fan and I will defend if I must, however, it does have it's flaws and they are big ones. It's probably one of the worst communities for any video game. Halo is a game that would really benefit with servers, kind of like how on CS you can have a server just for your clan, Halo would benefit from that. They should've just kept the clan system from Halo 2 so it would be easy to get custom games going, because that's the only way the game is fun.

Agreed. Unfortunately for us the Internet considered to be Serious Business. Do the best you can.

There have been servers I've left because of the way people acted. CS's community is not one of its strong points. At all. That being said, boosting rarely occurs outside of MLG. Which for most people is meaningless. Boosting is basically non-existent in the social playlists.

Halo's MP is far from bad, even factoring the community in it. It has a stronger set of community tool thats MGS, between 4 player co-op, Forge, and Theatre. There's a reason that people constantly come back to it and why it is one of most competitive multiplayer games on consoles. It community is filled with some jerks - but then what game isn't? But to judge Halos community without factoring the guys that make Machinima or the awesome people over at Forgehub doesn't really make sense.

I guess I just have bad luck when it coms to Halo.

Honestly, I can't even remember the last time I had fun on it.
