So here's the bottom line for the Xbox in 2011, based on current trends and what we know is happening over the next few years. Check back here in 2011 to see if we were right!

* CPU/GPU - Integrated chip with 16 x 5GHz processor cores, 32 x 2GHz graphics cores
* Memory - 8GB GDDR8
* Media - Dual-format HD-DVD/Blu-ray drive for backwards compatibility and movies
* Storage - 4TB hard disk for online game (and movie) delivery
* Built-in camera - for gesture-based control
* Built-in microphone - for voice-recognized control

A nice spec list, although I am missing the network specs. I'll give it a shot myself. Wireless-N + Wired 1Gb LAN connections.

http://fantazm.blogspot.com/2007/11/xbox-3-hardware-specs-for-2011.html

for the most part these specifications seem accurate when considering this thing will be released in 2011/2012 and newly released consoles are always more powerful than pc hardware at launch, and is usually showcased as the flagship hardware for years to come. Intel is already prepping to launch the Octo core cpu and ATI is working on putting many gPu's on a single die like 20 of them on 45nm structure.ram is becoming cheaper and cheaper but i see XDR(xtreme data rate) being used instead od GDDR8. anyway this will own PS4

I wonder if any of the new systems will have a dedicated physics processor. I remember hearing about one for the PC but I haven't heard any of the hermits in here talk about it in a long time.

Interesting how it takes 7+ years for 3 DDR level ram cards...and in only 3 more years they will achieve DDR8? Also that thing would cost like $1000...so fake.

Physics based processors will soon become obsolete and so could Graphics cards because general processors will soon become so powerful that there will be no need for them(PS2)emotion engine

why do u guys think having 16 processors is somehow impossible? fabrication techniqes are getting better everyday and the smaller we can make the chips the more we can fit on a single die.im sure many didnt think in 2002 that the 360 would have 3 seperate processors but it did, the same thing is happening again. remember octo cor come out THIS year.

The TC should have linked the tech.co.uk article (which the blog is based on) instead. What the writer did was some basic extrapolation, such as "if core speeds are increasing by X every Y years and the number of cores is increasing by N every Y years than the Xbox 3 could have a processor with Q cores runing at R speeds". Its merely done as a "what if" idea since MS has been so tight-lipped about the Xbox 3.

because it won't happen. 16 processors is Impractical...also the cost would be ludicrous. The most is 8 really fast processors...and even that's overkill.

I am sorry what? the 8800 gtx/gts/gt/ultra out do any cpu on the market today in speed. And its getting faster. What i can see happening is graphics cards becoming in place of the cpu. Intel is trying to head that route as well with their new cpu/graphics chip in one. They know its going to happen so they are starting it now.

oh and i hear xbox360 fanboys talking about how PS3 is crap and there 9 cell cpu is crap why is 360 wanting it then?

face it for the games coming up you will need more power xbox360 is slow and people will see that intime.. you dont have to bea smart man to see that..

I think he was being facetious and taking a shot at Sony who have tried to go with a one chip solution for their last two systems but couldn't quite cut it when it came time to launch.

Physics cards are generally really expensive and have low motherboard compatibility rates, but that has begun to change in recent months.

You guys can laugh all you want, but this guy is probably right.

I also heard that Nintendo's new console would be a gigantic network of computers, that require you to inject pins into your spinal cord. It then allows you to enter a virtual world in which your strength, speed and gun wielding skillshave increased gigantically.

8 GB of RAM does sound about right though. PS3 and 360 each have 15-16 times the memory of their previous iteration. I don't know about this 16 processor multi-thread core mumbo jumbo, thats just ridiculous.

You overshot your estimates by a huge amount. Remember that consoles generally have lower specs than high-end gaming PCs because their hardware is dedicated only to gaming while the PC hardware is not. Most PCs nowadays have 2gb of RAM in them and 4GB for the top-end spec, the 360 only has 512mb.

Even if the top computers have those kind of specs, the 360 would probably be half that. But given the technical restrictions we are currently facing, unless there is a major breakthrough in the next few years we will probably not see an increase in clock speeds, but a more effective kind of architecture like we're currently seeing in multi-core processors. It wouldn't surprise me if the next 360 had dual SLI video cards though, perhaps with 256mb each.

LMAO at the people who think 16 processor cores is some big deal that won't happen. Um, aren't you guys seeing what is going on, parallel processing is where Processors are going. I guarantee you that any consoles that come out in 2011 will have at least 16 processor cores and possibly many more depending on whether the trend goes towards fewer full-features processor cores (i.e. intel quad-core) or many simplier, faster processors (i.e. Cell Processor or Stream processors in modern GPUs, etc.)

Links provide the criteria as to how this tech site made their prediction.

http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2007/03/13/next-xbox-720-to-launch-in-2011-2012-according-to-microsoft.htm

Had many long debates about this and figured I would just show you guys how the site came to make their prediction.

I'm not saying it's going to happen though I hope it does, only that these specs were not just pulled out of thin air eh well they were but the links provide substance to form their opinion.

I dont know about such large drives as solid state.

I could see large standard hard disks, as many developers would be pushing for digital distribution - of full games - like on the PC - because of how badly pre owned games are affecting the industry (apparantly 1 billion annually) - which rivals, or seems worse than piracy.

There's no point for solid state in a console. One large enough to hold all the media crap we're expected to keep on our media center consoleswould be insanely expensive while a regular one would be gigantic for much less money. Its not like we keep our consoles in extreme environments where solid state would give an advantage in reliability, and its only faster in short bursts. Sustained read/ writes are much more applicable assuming games do go to a parallel processing model like the Cell or that 16 core monstrosity since it will need to stream data.

whoody12

Are you serious?

Then Sony might as well pack up and leave the laptop business.

* Media - Dual-format HD-DVD/Blu-ray drive for backwards compatibility and movies
* Storage - 4TB hard disk for online game (and movie) delivery
Nameless-Hero

:lol: 4TB's? Yeah, uh huh. You mean to say that MS will actually care to help themselves with Digital dist. next gen? Wow, smart move. A little too late. 360 arcade is nice though.

And HD-DVD? Will it have laser disc too. I seriously doubt that format will have any support.

Built-in camera - for gesture-based controlNameless-Hero

Now here you may have something. I used to work for a CA company that does gesture motion sensing games in theaters and malls for advertising. Some of you may have seen them. I have heard through the grape vine that they may have been or will be working with MS. No, I have no proof. Here's the company: www.reactrix.com

On 5 years the xbox moved from a 4 gbyte harddrive too a 20gb one.. 500% improvment.

on 5 years te xbox will move from a 20 gb harddrive too a 4 tb one.. 20000% improvment..

basicly technology will improve at 40 times higher speed now then a few years ago?

Thats sounds weird..

well There could possibly be 1 tb of harddrive, but that is the most...

8 4 GHZ cores for

A blue ray player sounds reasonable.. Actully the only thing that does.

GDDR8 memory? lol.. Probably 4 GB GDDR3 memory..

Built in microphone and camera? Its a console, not a laptop! Omg retard..

16 x 5GHz processor cores actully..this doesn't sound too bad.. probably 8 4GHZ processor cores is reasonable, still a great difference, but considering how stupid this guy is it is really close

32X 2ghZ graphics cores? lol... Thats the most funny thing they said.. Seriously, a high end graphics core today is 612 mhz.. and those are only slightly less good then the ones that will be included in the next xbox.. Seriously, core clock speeds doesn't improve very fast.. in 2003 when geforce 5 series was relased those had 475 mhz maximum.. Thats no big difference from the 500 mhz xenos.. Since it is still kinda uncertain where the graphic card manufactures are moving I can't make any good predictions.. But maybe some 750 mhzX2 is reasonable.. Probably a bit high, but still.

This guy seriously knows nothing about technology...

Well The wii 2 will have 32GHZX128 graphics for sure. Im as smart as this guy!

So here's the bottom line for the Xbox in 2011, based on current trends and what we know is happening over the next few years. Check back here in 2011 to see if we were right!

* CPU/GPU - Integrated chip with 16 x 5GHz processor cores, 32 x 2GHz graphics cores
* Memory - 8GB GDDR8
* Media - Dual-format HD-DVD/Blu-ray drive for backwards compatibility and movies
* Storage - 4TB hard disk for online game (and movie) delivery
* Built-in camera - for gesture-based control
* Built-in microphone - for voice-recognized control

Too long. The next Xbox is coming out in 09.Shomb22

really doubt that, unless the xbox 360 is still losing money by then.
