CheapyD of Cheap Ass Gamer had posted a new poll asking Xbox 360 owners if their consoles had failed. On the CAGcast 110 podcast this week, he reveals the results. Out of a whopping 3000-plus respondents to his poll -- all of the respondents are site registrants and all responses are made public -- the percentage of users whose Xbox 360 had died was nearly 60 percent. Sixty percent! He goes on to say that if you count the number of units that had died the system failure rate is actually 70% due to some people having had multiple 360's die on them.

This is a stupendous number, something that CheapyD and Wombat readily admit is a horrendous embarassment to Microsoft. The kicker? Microsoft still hasn't fixed the problem yet...

Internet polls on a gaming site would definitely be an accurate and decisive way to find out. Im glad you posted this.

People forget it's a design issue so **all** X360s have the defect. It's only a matter of when not "if" you get the RROD.

Microsoft themselves has admitted this.

http://www.fastsilicon.com/latest-news/microsoft-admits-all-xbox360s-are-defective.html

What people forget as well is that there is no "fix" to the issue. So even if you send it in and get one back it's really not "fixed" it's just currently working. That's the reason for many people going thru several consoles.

CheapyD? Sounds made up or a joke.

Anyway, even if legit, online polls from a single site's registrants can never be trusted for anything because they only capture a very narrow demographic - Registrants of that site (people who are typically hardcore gamers and frequent the internet) and who care enough about the topic discussed to participate in a poll (most people who feel compelled to participate in polls like this are those who have been burned - it's rare for someone who hasn't had a faulty product to participate in such a poll). In short, these types of polls are always skewed one way or another.

People who post this always make me laugh, because they obviously have no idea what a design defect is.

Design defects are in fact issues and they can be resolved. A design defect can be a wide range of issues. In this case, it is a heat dissipation/chip retention issue which can be resolved in a myriad of ways such as improved heatsinks, increased airflow, transistor size reduction, methods of holding the chip in place, or any combination thereof.

EmperorSupreme

A huge margin of error in any poll would be 5%, let's just for fun say the margin of error for this poll is 20%. That would still be a ridiculously high amount of people who have had the issue.

5% is large for a randomly selected poll from a large and varied sample size. Internet polls generally pull from a small niche of the market who are far more likely to vote one way. This is due in large part to the purely voluntary nature of the poll itself. They trully are useless.

Over a long enough time period, the failure rate of anything becomes 100%

apart from the original gameboy.

The older models aren't gone, for one, and they're in far greater numbers than the newer models. As long as they're out there, it won't go away.

Furthermore, I'm unsure as to whether it's been truly resolved or just lessened. The measures they've taken are sure to help (looking at what they've done, they virtually have to) but I wouldn't be absolutely sure of a full resolution until the GPU die shrinks a bit.

Polls? Thats possibly the worst form of getting data...

Remember Gamespot's bogus polls choices? Im sure you can put in "I WUB T3H AUHSUM GRAPHICKS OF DA CONSOUL!!1ONE!111!" thatwould be chosen more.

Plus its already been established that 360 RROD rate is 16%

Sarcasm just flies right over your head doesn't it.

Let's see, I hate the 360...and a poll is asking how many 360's have died recently. I vote once, that my 360 has died of course, head into my temp folder and delete the cookie that says I voted. Vote again, once again that my 360 has died, and repeat. Yes, people care that much.

I thought everyone knew Falcon didn't fix the issue. Microsoft never said Falcon fixed it, not a single reputable website has said it's fixed, plenty of people with Falcon still getting the RROD on Xbox forums and in user reviews. All that to me says Not fixed. The only ones claiming a fix or a lessening of the RROD with Falcon are a few diehard lemmings.

So? It's a big steaming pile of crap, that never seemed to hurt the PS2 very much. I sacrificed hardware quality for games last gen why is it now some kind of deal breaker?

Tbo 60% sounds a little low.

Honestly? I would not be surprised.

I've had my original die + 3x after "repair".

My brother skipped the "repair" process and opted to be new 360s. He's on his 3rd new 360.

And 3rd new wireless headset.

360 Quality Control has been laughable at best. The only things designed *well* are the controllers, memory solutions and wireless modems.

Everything else seems to be made of FAIL.

Sorry guys, but 6 consoles later in one house (4x brand new, 2x refurb)...and doing nothing special to them (all console had more than adequate ventellation) they died. If someone told me 90%...I would not be shocked or awed.

To be honest with you, I certainly believe it. I think it is about 70%. Out of the pepole I know who own a 360, about 20 of them, 18 of them have had the RROD and for some of them it happened more than once. I completely agree with that poll.

Internet polls, and news aren't very reliable, some people always vote more then once, lie about owning the system, or mistaken the warning for a lose A/V Cable (all 4 red lights) for the RRoD, and then break their system trying to fix a simple problem on their own or send in for repairs. Internet News reports either exagerate, misquote, or outright lie to attract more subscribers.

I dare you to go through your friends list and ask them how many have had trouble with their 360's. DVD drive, A/V, RROD or wifi/ethernet issues.

I frekin dare you. I did. If I said to you that "most" responded saying they had issues, it would be an understatement.

Come on, Dreams, don't let personal anectodes interfere with your common sense. Internet polls are laughed at for a reason (actually, many reasons), and while the 360 failure rate is high (reportedly between 15 and 30 percent) 70 percent is ridiculous.

Mine lasted from November 2005 - August 2007 (kept it going via towel trick through October 2007).

My refurb lasted from October 2007 - November 2007

My next refub has gone from December 2007 - Present, but didn't work right out of the box (doesn't always read discs). I've not sent it back because I don't yet feel like being bothered with it.

When I send it back, I'll be on refurb #3.

My brother's lasted from December 2005 - October 2006.

My brother then bought another brand new one. It lasted from October 2006 - July 2007.

My brother then bought another brand new one. It lasted from July 2007 - Present.

So yea...I was you until last Fall.

I guess we will have to wait and see. I've absolutely punished this thing before. When my girlfriend was addicted to Viva Pinata she played 8 hours solid while I was at work, then I came home and play 5 hours with her watching. Multiple days and it never crapped out.

I suppose I've got a good one.

AHH, so nice to hear from you, however i'm afraid your wasting your time with these 360 sheep, they've all spent their money blindly and have no more to spend on the real console of choice our beloved PS3.

They will no doubt reply to your thread completely ignoring the facts about the failure quantities and instead reply with a 360 list of games released thus far and the sales figures included with that. So unfortunately your post is falling on deaf ears here, believe me i tried but their just a bunch of little teeny bops that think they know about consoles and games.

Where as i have been gaming for over 30 years and still these little boys have the nerve to try and debate and educate me, but i however appreciate your post and the facts listed along with it, since facts are a refreshing change here because 360 fanboys don't have any all they have are sales quotas, they don't care about hardware quality as well as good games.

Even though to this day the PS-2 has had the best video games ever realeased on any console and completely dominated the original Xbox, and gamecube as well as the 2007 holiday season, these 360 sheeps stil believe a software company can come and pull the rug out from an already established video game console producing giant like Sony...makes ya' laugh when ya' think about it, what can you do except shake your head and mutter to yourself, kids-kids kids, you'll understand when your older.

[QUOTE="TheSystemLord1"]I don't understand how some people can just be so unlucky...I'm about to celebrate my Elite's 1st birthday with only a few freezes here and there in its lifetime. I might just buy it a cake...the 360's that last a year must be special.TheSystemLord1

exactly. it's only its first birthday. wait to see if you can celebrate the second birthday because you might not. I own a falcon and I am not banking on the fact that it will make it to the second birthday.lol

I used to run mine maybe 8 hours/day for the first several months.

Dreams-Visions

Sounds like I'm pretty much average. Oh well, can't say I'm too bothered. Its almost time for the next Xbox anyway. My 3-year warranty will carry me through 2010/2011 or so. By then BC will keep me going hopefully.

[QUOTE="snakes3425"]Internet polls, and news aren't very reliable, some people always vote more then once, lie about owning the system, or mistaken the warning for a lose A/V Cable (all 4 red lights) for the RRoD, and then break their system trying to fix a simple problem on their own or send in for repairs. Internet News reports either exagerate, misquote, or outright lie to attract more subscribers. Dreams-Visions

If I told you 70% of my friends list said that had experienced problems with their 360 in the past, what would you say?

That's not an internet poll. That's a poll of the 96 people on my LIVE friends list. What would you say then?

Around 70 percent sounds just about right to me. I love the Xbox 360 and its games but MS really needs to release a more reliable version of the console.

If a random internet poll counts as facts of the PS3's dominance why can't NPD reported sales numbers count as evidence of the 360's dominance?

I voted in that poll. Eleven times. Eleven rrods for me and I dont have a 360.

See how accurate that is?

travt-down

Well then, you're the worst kind.

See how trying to act smart backfires?

I love it too. Easily the best gaming console experience on the market today. But this crap is ridiculous. As can be their customer service. Hopefully, you guys won't find out. Hopefully, you bought your warranties from Best Buy. They replace on the spot, no questions asked, for 2 years.

that owns. I should have done that, but I pre-ordered my 360 in May from a GameStop so that I could get one. It was working out well for me until August '07. Dealing with MS (and refurbished systems) has been hellish.

Avoid MS warranties at all costs. Refurbs are teh suck.

yes, yes it does. And you all know I've been an ardent defender of Microsoft's 360 because it is a teriffic gaming experience. Best on the market, IMO. But I have to keep it real...the hardware quality control is/was bafflingly poor. Modern technology isn't supposed to die fast.

I did opt for the 4 year PRP from Best Buy on Elite launch day. I think I got it cheap, I barely remember. I keep that along with my PSP for my TV in my desk here.

I had heard that Best Buy stopped giving out PRP's on 360's though. They have to honor mine of course, but for anybody past the date when they quit sounds to me like they are SOL.

Obviously such a poll isn't very useful for such statistic due to the small sample size. For example, I only have a few friends with 360's, but none of them have had trouble. Does this mean that the 360 has a 0% failure rate? Far from it. While your sample is larger than mine, it's still extremely small in the grand scheme of things and is likely skewed by being geared toward a specific demographic (likely hardcore gamers, possibly early adopters, etc). Such anecdotal evidence is no way to base statistic figures off of.

Why ? because sales are made based on whats available first in the national market, you don't really believe that if either the roles were reversed and the PS3 got to be released first or if they were even both released at the same time that the 360 would still have the lead do you ? Come on the only reason the 360 has had the dominant sales is because it arrived a year ahead of the PS3 and therefore was the only next gen system to choose from, so it's not a case of console superiority, it's a case of lack of choices in 2005, but here we are in 2008 and now the 360 has sold 17 million units to the PS3's 10 million, meaning after only a year and not even half as many games in it's library the PS3 has closed the gap to 7 million.

Why ? because the word is out on the lousy, unreliable hardware microsoft has built and the reliable hardware Sony has built plus the near 170 titles announced in Playstation magazine to be released this year alone on the PS3. So enjoy the sales lead for now both 360 and Wii fanboys, because by this time next year it will not exist.

PS3nut

But what about the disc read errors, yellow light of death, and plain old shutting down and not turning back on issues that are being discovered all over the 40gb and 80gb PS3's?

Why did the 360 outsell the PS3 every single month of the last half of last year?

What will you say if the 360 continues to outsell the PS3 this year? In 4 days we will know whether or not the PS3 managed to outsell the 360 for 2 months in a row. Unfortunately, Microsoft already said it would have hardware shortages throughout March so even these numbers mean little.

And one more thing, how many of those 170 titles are going to even be A games?

The PS3 is fine, its a fun system. I own a 60gb and have had little problems with it. But to say that the gaming experience is better than that on the Xbox 360, or even the Wii now for that matter, is seriously false.
