I hope i don't get moderated for this....I think it is an appropriate forum to list this topic...
I write this because maybe I went about things the wrong way. But let me start by saying I am not a fanboy of any system. Sure I will admit that I liked my NES, I liked my PS1,2,3. But I did like the 1st xbox. Due to some financial changes, this is the first generation of gaming where I didn't own every system. There was no contest during ps1 and ps2 games but I know xbox fans liked xbox for better graphics, hard drive etc but limited library. Now its flipped, ps3 has the hard drive, limited library etc....and xbox fans pan it for the same reason they defended the old xbox. I loved my xbox due to ninja gaiden, star wars stuff etc. But I favored my cube and ps2.
Now that is out of the way. I think I need some help on my xbox 360 set up. I didn't buy it for a long time because the RROD was a 1 out of 3 systems. All 35 of my xbox 360 friends returned their system more than once. Now w/ the warranty (though I don't forgive microsoft for still not fixing this lame issue) I bought my cheaper xbox 360 pro. Thinking "hey i got my Wii, I got my ps3 and xbox 360 is cheaper so I'll get it."
Well it turned out to be a huge investment. MS is smart for detachable hard drives since that costs alot. But to get the best out of what most xbox 360 fans claim is "better graphics than ps3" means the elite. You see my ps3 was easy to connect and I could connect my audio and hdmi anyway I want. My xbox 360 pro....not so much. At $299 I got a 60gb hard drive (sweet), headset, silver membership, controller (can't charge it w/o buying extra stuff) and component cables.
I have 3 entertainment systems in the house. All w/ bose and all w/ 50 inch plasma or 60+ projection. So as you can see, I want the full experience. PS3 delivered that w/ blu-ray and such. So I wanted my xbox to do the same. The I run things is hdmi goes to tv and seperate audio (optical or av) goes to my surround sound. I don't like running it thru the tvs. When I hooked up my xbox 360 (bought my own hdmi cable) I found out that the component connection that has the audio physically blocks the hdmi port! So to fix this I had to buy MS proprietary hdmi and av/optical adapter. That was $59....then I had to buy a cooler, that was $59 dollars. To top it off, i called MS and they send you to another country and the supervisor proceeded to tell me to buy the MS hdmi because buying any other hdmi cable modifies the system and voids the warranty (what a bunch of bull).
So my $299 plus the MS hdmi/av $59, plus the intercooler %59 turned out to cost higher than the small hard drive ps3. I mean A cheap $9 hdmi worked well on my ps3 and I pay no $60 bucks for online. Admittedly I had to buy a dual shock cuz it's dumb to play w/o the rumble.
My xbox cost me a little over $400 but the head set is nice to have. My ps3 is now $400 and I don't have to buy any proprietary hdmi and I have a blu-ray.
I guess after this long "whining" I am asking if somehow maybe I didn't need to buy the hdmi from MS. I just couldnt find one that allows me to plug the av seperately...something MS knew so they could cash in i suppose. Any suggestions on how I can make this cheaper when I buy a second xbox (I have two ps3s so my spouse and friends can play online). Maybe next time I don't need the MS hdmi and still find a way to connect the way I have my sound system set up?
I guess MS was smart to lower their prices by making cuts. But to get the 1080p, great sound, great graphics....you basically are paying for a ps3 w/ no blu-ray.
Again I'm not a fanboy, I was just let down by a company I use to have faith in. I still want to get a second xbox so my spouse can play online w/ me and other friends...I just don't see myself doing this if it costs that same as a ps3
