I hope i don't get moderated for this....I think it is an appropriate forum to list this topic...

I write this because maybe I went about things the wrong way. But let me start by saying I am not a fanboy of any system. Sure I will admit that I liked my NES, I liked my PS1,2,3. But I did like the 1st xbox. Due to some financial changes, this is the first generation of gaming where I didn't own every system. There was no contest during ps1 and ps2 games but I know xbox fans liked xbox for better graphics, hard drive etc but limited library. Now its flipped, ps3 has the hard drive, limited library etc....and xbox fans pan it for the same reason they defended the old xbox. I loved my xbox due to ninja gaiden, star wars stuff etc. But I favored my cube and ps2.

Now that is out of the way. I think I need some help on my xbox 360 set up. I didn't buy it for a long time because the RROD was a 1 out of 3 systems. All 35 of my xbox 360 friends returned their system more than once. Now w/ the warranty (though I don't forgive microsoft for still not fixing this lame issue) I bought my cheaper xbox 360 pro. Thinking "hey i got my Wii, I got my ps3 and xbox 360 is cheaper so I'll get it."

Well it turned out to be a huge investment. MS is smart for detachable hard drives since that costs alot. But to get the best out of what most xbox 360 fans claim is "better graphics than ps3" means the elite. You see my ps3 was easy to connect and I could connect my audio and hdmi anyway I want. My xbox 360 pro....not so much. At $299 I got a 60gb hard drive (sweet), headset, silver membership, controller (can't charge it w/o buying extra stuff) and component cables.

I have 3 entertainment systems in the house. All w/ bose and all w/ 50 inch plasma or 60+ projection. So as you can see, I want the full experience. PS3 delivered that w/ blu-ray and such. So I wanted my xbox to do the same. The I run things is hdmi goes to tv and seperate audio (optical or av) goes to my surround sound. I don't like running it thru the tvs. When I hooked up my xbox 360 (bought my own hdmi cable) I found out that the component connection that has the audio physically blocks the hdmi port! So to fix this I had to buy MS proprietary hdmi and av/optical adapter. That was $59....then I had to buy a cooler, that was $59 dollars. To top it off, i called MS and they send you to another country and the supervisor proceeded to tell me to buy the MS hdmi because buying any other hdmi cable modifies the system and voids the warranty (what a bunch of bull).

So my $299 plus the MS hdmi/av $59, plus the intercooler %59 turned out to cost higher than the small hard drive ps3. I mean A cheap $9 hdmi worked well on my ps3 and I pay no $60 bucks for online. Admittedly I had to buy a dual shock cuz it's dumb to play w/o the rumble.

My xbox cost me a little over $400 but the head set is nice to have. My ps3 is now $400 and I don't have to buy any proprietary hdmi and I have a blu-ray.

I guess after this long "whining" I am asking if somehow maybe I didn't need to buy the hdmi from MS. I just couldnt find one that allows me to plug the av seperately...something MS knew so they could cash in i suppose. Any suggestions on how I can make this cheaper when I buy a second xbox (I have two ps3s so my spouse and friends can play online). Maybe next time I don't need the MS hdmi and still find a way to connect the way I have my sound system set up?

I guess MS was smart to lower their prices by making cuts. But to get the 1080p, great sound, great graphics....you basically are paying for a ps3 w/ no blu-ray.

Again I'm not a fanboy, I was just let down by a company I use to have faith in. I still want to get a second xbox so my spouse can play online w/ me and other friends...I just don't see myself doing this if it costs that same as a ps3

Every sensible person knows this, it has nothing to with which is a better product, it's simple math, yet lemmings tend to get really defensive and turn casual when discussing these things.

I recently bought another 360 for $299, and that was it, so it is much cheaper than the PS3, I would also recommend that you do not use the intercooler, most people say it damages the console, and in most cases it melts and gets stuck to your 360 due to its cheap material.

MS made the 360 with the essential gaming stuff.

SONY made the PS3 with extra stuff, thats not essential for gaming.

Everyones needs are different, what may be cheaper for one person, may not be cheaper for another.

This killed your entire thread. imo anyways. People don't have to buy everything for the 360, I don't need wifi, hdmi cables or an intercooler.

Serious question, since a bunch of people have asked me: Do you need a "MIcrosoft brand" HDMI cable for Xbox 360, or can you use any HDMI cable?

Online alone will get u up to the PS3's price and over, and we are on an online gaming forum, so I'm speaking in behalf of more serious gamers.

The only reason I see a 360 ultimately costing more is because people buy more games for it. The last I knew, you could buy a 360 for roughly two Benjamins.

As far as price goes my big hang up with X360 is the online fee. I feel like online is mandatory this gen to really get your moneys worth from your games and the $50 a year for X360 more than makes up for any difference in the cost of the PS3 all by itself. I also feel like the hardware is a little overpriced for the quality. If I spend that much on something it should be reliable.

well it is true about the 35 so it was just my experience. I did state I bought hdmi cables for 9 bucks. Heck you can get one for 3 bucks since its just ones and zeros. But if you read further.....you can't use your own hdmi and then plug in the av that came w/ the system. If physically blocks it so it forces you to buy a thinner av output made only by MS which comes w/ the hdmi.

Again I said I don't run my hdmi sound through tv, that is just preference. Obviously many do it, since MS has the product for it lol.

Please games are soooo last generation. :P

Sure it can start out at two benjamins, but you also need a WiFi, 200 years of Xbox live, 3 HDDVD players (in case one breaks), a Mercedes-Benz G55 (plus 2 years of gas), a home. Also power, water fro the home. It all adds up. Or you can get a PS3 for $400, but it also comes with a Blu-ray player so that should take off around $300. So the real price of the PS3 is around $100. When the real price of the 360 is around $500,000.

(note this was largely a joke to show how point less adding extra stuff on to systems is)

Component cables will get you 1080p if your TV supports 1080p through the component hook up, Most do. You don't need HDMI. How does the component cable block your HDMI? If I remember correctly they are about an inch away from each other, (my nephew took over my elite, i have his pro). I will check it out this weekend when I go up there. But you can get 1080p with component. And my MS component cable has an optical out, if your looking for optical surround.

so um, you quantify math with how much time you have to post? I have a life :) and this is NOT the only forum in the world. Just one I decided to join recently. Besides, you didn't even address my hdmi/av portion.

Another poster made a good point about xbox just giving the essentials. Yes that is true but too many proceed to say xbox is better graphics, better this, better that regarding technology AND continue to say it is cheaper. How can a core or component connect pro system have better pixel by pixel comparison to a hi def ps3. I like both systems, and MS is smart but they can't say it compares to ps3 and it is cheaper. It only compares when you get the bells and whistles.

now back to my question, is there any other way to buy an av adapter that can connect to the back of the xbox. Probably not but thought I'd give it a shot.

About the intercooler...some say it is a MUST, others say no. Can anyone tell me their experience? My friend owns his own vid store and his employee's have had RROD twice per employee. Gamestop employees who are loyal xbox fans also admit to experiencing RROD more than once and say get a cooler. If I don't really need it let me know and thanks to all the nice replies.

Wrong. Its like sony fan boys say when talking about Live. You don't need those things, unless you want ALL the bells and whistles. I hook mine up fine with a cat5 cable. I actually like it better. have 120 gig drive. and hooked up component to 1080i. Don't have 1080p TV, but component will get you 1080p, plus have a optical out on the component surround when I do get my 1080p samsung. Only extra thing I bought was rechargable batteries. Much better then $700 for my PS3, 300 gig drive, dual shock controller, and remote head set. See I can do it to. The PS3 is almost twice as expensive. Honestly, both are missing things that will cost you extra. Gaming is not cheap by any remote stretch of the imagination.

You're right. Clearly not trolling.

Carry on.

So you claim the RROD is a 1 in 3 problem and all 35 of your friends on LIVE got it, only 11 of your friends should have gotten the RROD the others were just really, really unlucky. I've had my 360 since 2006 play it just about everyday sometimes in 6 hour sessions at night, had the RROD once. Now I own 2 360's and the other one had never had the RROD and I've had it since 2007.

I still want to get a second xbox so my spouse can play online w/ me and other friends...I just don't see myself doing this if it costs that same as a ps3

loftus42

Component cables will get you 1080p if your TV supports 1080p through the component hook up, Most do. You don't need HDMI. How does the component cable block your HDMI? If I remember correctly they are about an inch away from each other, (my nephew took over my elite, i have his pro). I will check it out this weekend when I go up there. But you can get 1080p with component. And my MS component cable has an optical out, if your looking for optical surround.

thanks for the reply. Yes it has optical but I have multiple things connected w/ a bose running things so that is not an option. I could put the optical into the tv then audio out into the bose but again that takes up all the space for the other systems.

As for the component cables blocking..it is not 1 inch away it is like i milimeter away from the hdmi port. It blocks have the hdmi port (maybe this is a new design since I bought mine this month?). Component at 1080p....my newer tv can but that is in the main family room. The older tv from last year can't and I prefer hdmi. I am just trying to set it up like a ps3 meaning hdmi on ps3, hdmi w/ xbox 360.

thanks for the help though. I can at least use another xbox in the main room w/ components and I don't have to buy the MS. That answered my original post :)

Serious question, since a bunch of people have asked me: Do you need a "MIcrosoft brand" HDMI cable for Xbox 360, or can you use any HDMI cable?BobHipJames
If you hook up str8 to the TV, then No. any hdmi cable will do. If you want optical sound then there is an adapter that plugs into the console where the regular cable plugs into that allows for optical surround. Can't remember who makes it though, maybe MS. mine is with the MS component cable I have (optical surround sound that is).

This killed your entire thread. imo anyways. People don't have to buy everything for the 360, I don't need wifi, hdmi cables or an intercooler.

Haha he has 3 entertainment systems throughout his house, a 60+ projection, a 50 inch plasma, and you're upset about the extra $50 that a 360 might cost? My my, these trolls need to try harder...

Edit: Oh, and if you're so successful with your "spouse" and house, then why do you not speak anything even close to proper grammar? No offense, but you seem rather childish and immature, and thus I call your entire thread LIES.

i'm not gonna comment on the rest, but i hope you know that not all of us come from english speaking countries

Now I own 2 360's and the other one had never had the RROD and I've had it since 2007.xxyetixx

So you had an RROD? wow what are the odds of me meeting a stranger who had an RROD if the chance of getting it was so low? And 35 mean 35 people. Since we are online you do meet more than that. It is not a 50% rate, but out of more than 100 people I have known online, 35 got it more than once. The rest are either fine or had it once. Still xbox is a popular and great system backed by a great company so I don't accept the 33% failure rate.

It is no secret that RROD happens alot, that is why they all come w/ the 3 year warranty. There was an apology about it all too by MS. I am not hating it, if I did I wouldnt buy the system. But 1 in 3 w/ 35 friends I know getting it means 35 out of 100 or so. I use the word "friends" loosely since that is what I call my xbox live contacts "friends list".

I hope I am as lucky as you...I do want all systems to succeed. It only benefits the consumer. Now I have to stop posting and get my life again lol. Thanks for sharing your experience, it makes me feel I wont have this RROD problem....but um you said one of your 360s is 2007? I hope it holds out since your warranty will be due sometime end of this year?

nice lol. ownage approved and stamped!

where did you get the idea that I was upset? please read carefully. I was asking is there an alternative to my situation. You don't get luxuries w/o spending wisely you know but I understand it is hard to comprehend. BTW, I wanted to take care of my brother who is mentally challenged and my parents who are elderly so they helped buy those tvs lol. I am not rich, I just have a big family who shares :). Ownage....please!

I've also had a NES that stopped working and you had to blow or lick the games and put them in there just right to get it to work and evenutally it just died. I've gone thru 2 PS2 cause the launch PS2's were just aweful. There's been a few DVD players that have stopped working. One of my cars had some issues and I had to get that fixed. Got a few f'd up cell phones had to get them replace. Everything has a failure rate, yes the 360 is higher than it should be, and MS compensated for that and it has a 3 yr warranty the only other thing I own that has a longer warranty than that is my car.

*sigh*

Another Low Level user with less than 10 posts creating a "Cost" thread. Why am I not surprised? :?

FYI: I only play $30/yr for XBL and thus, I've spent less on my Xbox360 (had since 2005) than I have on my PS3 (had since early 2007)

LosDaddie

so um, you quantify math with how much time you have to post? I have a life :) and this is NOT the only forum in the world. Just one I decided to join recently. Besides, you didn't even address my hdmi/av portion.

And yet for such a successful person as yourself with not one, but THREE entertainment systems (all with Bose systems and 50"+ HDTVs); You ask this Xbox360 question on the SYSTEM WARS forum instead of the Xbox360 forum?

You're right. Clearly not trolling.

Carry on.

you can't put this on the xbox forum because it contains ps3 in it. You can't post it in ps3 because it contains xbox in it. Read the forum rules...reading is power. The only place to talk about is here. My friend got moderated at the xbox forum for asking the same questions because he compared his set up to a ps3. Again read the rules.

Funny how a person who practically called me a noob for having less post than him doesn't know this fact.

If I don't really need it let me know and thanks to all the nice replies.

blue900
The intercooler is not needed if your 360 is pretty new. i.e. if you can hear the fan roar, then yes you might need it for prolonged gaming sesions, but if you can barely hear it like my elite was like, then no you don't. I never had a problem with mine, but i have heard that MS voids the warranty if it is detected that you have used one. Just a heads up. My MS component cable comes with optical out, so you don't really need hdmi, if your TV supports 1080p through the component in. A way to test this is just plug in your component cables, and see if you can get 1080p. My nephews samsung does get 1080p through the component in. Most TV's do, not all though. good luck.

You can't be serious. The price on THE BOX is cheaper. Its all the stuff after that original price that isn't. You know that. Yet, here you are claiming different to make a point.

Blue, just give it up and say your actual circumstances. My guess is that you actually do live in the house, but you're the kid, not the adults, and you have to ask for your consoles. That would explain why, with such wealth around you, you care about a measly $50, if that. Or, you just made this entire thing up just to get a bunch of people agreeing with you about how much better the PS3 is, and you're nothing but a troll. So, care to come clean yet? How're my guesses?Trigger_Hppy

in this economy I doubt many are rich. SO I don't claim to be one, I was just fortunate and I have my family living w/ me sharing expenses. I am asian so in my culture, we don't look down at others who ask their parents to live w/ them so we the grown up children can care for them. However, w/ a family of adults (there are no children in the house just two elderly parents w/ retirement pensions, 1 brother who needs medical care, my spouse and I) we needed to design a home that accomadates all. What son would feel good about having a great tv etc when their parents have crap in their room? But we share, I am not rich, I just saved for this day since I was in college.

As for the caring about $50, it is more about pointing out that I didn't really save on my xbox 360 like most say I would. I don't cry about it, I just asked if anyone could help me w/ a better alternative. Sorry if you don't understand my circumstance and that I actually want to give everything to my family.

Same difference. You're saying that anti-360 posters say that the 360 is NOT much cheaper than the PS3 if at all. Yet, when sales numbers come out they say it sells because its cheaper. That's what you were saying. Yet, they are right on both accounts. 360 is NOT cheaper if you want the bells and wistles. 360 did sell well over the xmas season due to the low price on the box.

A console isn't more expensive or less expensive with when it comes to sales. Buying the console is $200 for Arcade and $300 for Pro.

If's and wants are not needs.

Hell you might as well add in a 1080P TV for Blu-Ray. The retail price is the retail price. Once you put in the factor of if's and wants you could add anything from accessories, games, or whatever. Bottom line is those things aren't included in the retail price and everything after the buying of a machine is an optional choice by the consumer. Not a neccesity.

TC sounds like a straight up fakeboy. if youre so rich and well off Mr. Moneybags why are you sweating the price of peripherals and XBL? im sure you can afford it with your 3 50 inch TVs and Bose surround systems.
