For starters, the 360 Elite will only support the HDMI 1.2 specification, as opposed to 1.3, which is the latest and greatest (and ships with the PS3). 1.3 adds support for the transmission of Dolby TrueHD, which is a lossless multi-channel audio (PCM) format being used on top-end HD-DVD discs.
In a forum post, Microsoft techie Amir Majidimehr suggests that "If you are keen on having 5.1 PCM output, I recommend purchasing the Toshiba A2 player which after the price drop, will be much cheaper than Elite," which we suspect isn't quite the company line.
Additionally, when using HDMI the resolution on the 360 will be forced to 1080p, regardless of the display resolution of the device it is actually being connected to, which could result in unnecessary image downscaling or, at worst, lack of picture.
However, that's not all the interesting Elite gossip. Whilst the decision not to include an HD-DVD drive in the unit has annoyed some, Microsoft seems to be suggesting that its because a Blu-ray add-on unit could be made available for the console at a later date. In an interview with GamesIndustry, Europe boss Neil Thompson suggests that when it comes to movies, "Im not sure the market has moved to high definition yet... And if and when it does, then the way that we've constructed the offering we've made means we'll be able to go whichever way we want."
Is that a hint at an add-on Blu-ray player, should Sony's proprietary format win the HD war?
The market for HD movies is in a precarious position at the moment, and whilst Sony would like to think that the PS3 is a great trojan horse for Blu-ray, world wide sales don't yet give credence to that argument. Microsoft seems to be hedging its bets, but the so-so hardware upgrade for the Elite isn't really helping its cause.

do you know how many tv's support 1.3?...let me tell you...zero...that's right zilch....and the ones that are coming out are so expensive..it's ridiculous....DaddyDC650
You're missing the point. The 360 Elite is suppose to be an HD feature packed console yet it can't even match Sony's features. If they're going to support HDMI, why not support HDMI 1.3? It seems like a half-a@@ed wannabe "Elite" system to me. No Wifi, no memory card readers, no Blu-Ray/HD-DVD... no thanks!Sorry, I'd rather save $120+ than be forced to buy a blu-ray player which may or may not become the industry standard. Besides, who gives a crap about memory card readers?!? What exactly do you need these for? I bought a 360 to play GAMES, not to stare at my digital pictures. I'll admit that Wifi is convenient (although it is true that wired is better), if you can easily pick up HDMI cables on the cheap (the cow argument for why the PS3 not having any in the box is okay), why not go to ebay, and get the wireless adapter for cheap too? Sorry, for an "elite" system, the PS3 not including HDMI or even component cables is pretty pitiful. You get both in the Elite. And not to be repetitive, but seriously, GAMES. Cows always seem to list all the accessories on the PS3 instead of any virtues it has as a gaming console. Why is that? I'm guessing because they're not sure what virtues those are, right now. It seems to me Microsoft is backing up their end of the "HD feature packed console" deal...
You have to be kidding me... First off, the PS3 does not cost 120+ bucks more than the "Elite". It costs 490 bucks by itself, another 50 bucks for live (not counting the 50 bucks that you'll have to spend EVERY YEAR) and another 30 bucks if you want a charger for your controllers. That's about 570 bucks alone. Throw in a Wifi adapter for 50-100 bucks and you've got yourself a console that has less features than the PS3 and costs more. I'm not even going to mention the fact that it does not support HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. In the end, the "360" Elite is not "Elite" @ all. Btw, I find it funny that you complain about the PS3 not including Component/HDMI cables but you ignore the fact that the 360 "Elite" does not support HDMI 1.3, lossless audio like TrueHD, the ability to swap out the hard drive with ANY SATA lappy hard drive, no Wifi, and no HD-DVD/Blu-Ray support. Only a fool would think that the "Elite" is an "HD feature packed console". Give me a break.USB WiFi adaptor is $12 bucks online...
The PS3 charge kit is half-assed anyway, you cant even play and charge at the same time, and isn't that we are complaining about? Half-assed attempts for bullet points?
PS3 does not upscale DVD's, Xbox 360 upscales up to 1080p via HDMI.
Xbox 360 with a HD-DVD Drive comes with HD Cable, Headset, HD Movie, & HD Remote Control. PS3 comes with none of that.
HDMI 1.3 is pointless, it's not the reason the Elite 360 can't output TrueHD
Any receiver with HDMI 1.1 or better can output uncompressed audio, it's the players job to unzip the TrueHD file and turn it into uncompressed PCM, not the receivers.
But yes, your right, no Lossless audio for the 360 is a huge mistake IMO
1. Wifi should come standard with an "Elite" HD feature packed console. 2. You CAN play while you charge 3. PS3 WILL upscale DVD's in a future firmware update. Btw, 360 CAN'T do it as of today. 4. We're talking about the 360 "Elite" and not the HD-DVD drive you have to purchase SEPERATELY. 5. HDMI 1.3 is not pointless because one day folks will want that feature. Maybe not now but they will.1. It's 12 dollars
2. Play and charge with a 2 foot cable?
3. And Until then it's still a feature the PS3 doesn't have.........
4. But you bragged about the PS3 having BD
Â
1. It still is not included with the system. Even the PSP has a dang Wifi adapter. 2. USB cables can be bought for 1 dollar. Does not change the fact that you can play while you charge. 3. 360 does not have the feature also. Don't bring up the Elite because it's not out yet and neither is Sony's firmware update that will allow for DVD upscaling. 4. BD and or HD-DVD should have been included in the "Elite HD feature packed" console you speak of.1. Fine congratufu**enlations, you saved $12 dollars by already having WiFi
2.Your complaining because of the lack of Lossless audio with the HDMI 360 because its half assed...How is that any different then a half assed play and charge kit with a 2 foot wire? Â
 3. The current 360 does upscale DVD's via VGA...............................PS3 does not upscale DVD's in any way.
4. If it would have come with the built in HD-DVD player for $479, then it would not come with a HDMI Cable, HD Movie, HD remote, or Headset, that you get when you purchase seperatley.  Hell they probabley even would have gotten rid of the scaler and then it wouldn't upscale DVD's or games. There is always going to be a trade off. Â
