Just curious as to whether 360 owners would be willing to help with the Folding @ Home project as well.  If 360 owners donated their down time on their boxes as well I think the project could be done and cures found even faster.  Finding cures to prolong life is more important than arguing over a few hours of entertainment.  If any 360 owners have a heart to maybe they should send microsoft an email to ask if they can participate.

I think fanboys arguing over which system contributed the most to cure cancer would be the first worthwhile debate ever discussed between us.

Probably not. The Xbox 360 isn't strong enough to cure cancer. Maybe when Xbox 720 comes out, but the PS3 would have cured cancer by then.

you can do it on your pc. There is a better one then the folding home. It's called world comminity grid which is the main one. The man in charge of folding home is a bell end, who is after the publicity.

That 'folding' is probably just a cheap ploy; in reality, we're helping them compile the code for their new online service. -John

I don't see why not, so far the level of participation from PS3 owners has been fantastic. The level of computation being achieved daily has already doubled, thanks to the Cell's number-crunching capabilities.

it be more wiser if microsft dont introduce it..the 360 will be dead in hours..overheating  will get the best of the system..and with the short lifespan the 360 console have in it will be shorten even more if they use folding@home..

You guys have fun with folding @ home... if that's possible.

I didnt think it was halirous or anything.. but it was exactly what i was thinking.. I know the lems will come in and say "well, i play 8 hours a day since launch and am fine" but.. the fact is, the 360 overheats and has alot more hardware errors than ps3 (period) so leaving it on all night / during work/ when your watching tv../ doing anything other than playing video games (on it) would be more risky than doing so on Ps3.

I agree with the overheating point, honestly,I dont know why Microsoft arent fully addressing this issue.

I remember seeing a video of some dude making an egg on the 360 LOL

I have a PC, that's all i need. If i had Resistance and a PS3, yes, i'd get bored of it fairly quickly.

As for sacrificing gaming time for a noble cause, sure, i'm all for it. It's too bad i already donate a hefty amount of money to the cancer funds, which is why doing it on a system is of no consequence to me.

Why would you trade your gaming time to do it? Or do you play video games 24 hours a day? No sleep, no work, no school for you? Hell.. you can turn it on while you peruse the GS forums... using folding@home to bash ps3 games is stupid period... actually, bashing folding@home is stupid, period.

Lol, every thread turns into one here, (at least half the posts). And, nice sig, didnt he say that no one would need more than 256kb though? thats what i thought it was. People that thing technology somhow reached a standstill are ignant.. it will always keep advancing (exponential curve) You know that the director of the US patent office said that "everything meaningful that can be invented, has been invented" in like 1905 (random, i know, but i always put those two quotes in the same pool).. you think people in there industries would know about their industries better. (But few people accuse bill gates of being a genius).

Like I said... it's a noble cause. All I'm saying is that I'd rather dedicate my PC at home to doing something like this rather than a PS3. My PC has a dual-core processor and would be ultimately more suited to a task like this one. I'm sure that it would also be more power-efficient and generate less heat. There are also millions more PCs than PS3s. My point is that a gaming console should be used for gaming. That is just my opinion. You guys are welcome to yours and kudos to you for taking part in this project. If it is ever offered to PC users then I'll also join in. Mike

No your essentially using the PS3 to help researchers when you are NOT playing games. It's not that difficult of a concept to wrap your mind around. It's great that you give money to cancer research and I'm sure it's appreciated. But if you or someone you knew had cancer what would be the harm in also leaving your game system on to crunch some numbers at night? If you don't need to do it then don't. Give yourself another pat on the back for donating money and have a nice day.

Folding@home has been out for a day on the PS3. Who knows if it will cause PS3's to start frying left and right. No PS3's on the planet have been stressed all that much. If folding@home is the most intensive CPU usage the PS3 has seen so far, then this may just be a perfect way to do a world-wide stress test on the system.

Fortunately folding doesn't utilize most of the system resources except the CPU and a little GPU power. No USB usage, no need for constant bluetooth usage, no Blu-Ray usage etc etc.

The same could be said for the 360. We don't really know what kinds of hardware problems cause the ring of death. It may be faulty hardware that would never get used if it was running folding@home.

Even if this is just a Sony PR campaign, who really cares, it's a freakin awesome project. I would really like to see MS get into the project with the 360 as well. This type of thing should be standard in all future consoles.

I'm actually quite interested in this folding project. How exactly does number crunching, albeit on a supercomputer scale, result in a cure for cancer? If computing power could in any way accomplish this then why have my donations for cancer research been directed at laboratory testing rather than purchasing additional computing capacity? Oh... by the way PS2Hawk, I'm no buffoon. I am a member of a professional accounting body. I simply don't buy the hype. Apologies if my SW banter has you fooled into thinking that I don't care about curing cancer. My brother-in-law has Stage 4 Lymphoma and my grandmother died of Leukemia.

Agreed. This is really pathetic when the Wii60's try to downplay a great effort like this that Sony and it's PS3 users are doing, to try to make it sound like a joke.

Sorry to burst your bubble but I feel I must direct you to the fact that 7,700 ps3 are outperforming 150,000 windows o/s machines, that was the stats I saw on the folding@home website.

You guys have fun with folding @ home... if that's possible.

mruurds

Those complex mathematical equations might save your life or someone you love's life one day so that you can both continue to play games.

Mike

Actually the project started out on PCs and you can download the client to your PC.  However the project has been performing a lot better on the processors in the consoles which seem to crunch the numbers faster.

[QUOTE="Puckhog04"]Heh, i suppose if you're not having any games to play then curing cancer is a good time filler. mruurds

Yeah, since games are more important than one of the principle causes of death, right  ?

So you're essentially using the PS3 to cure cancer instead of playing games? That must make you feel real good at night. I donate money to cancer organizations, i don't need to do it on a system.

Acualy yes It does make me sleep good @ night, knowing that my PS3 could help someone.;)

So why do you bash PS3 owners for doing a good thing.....I think you need to check your fanboy @ the door.

This thread WAS about that, but fat pregnant cows quickly made it about competition, an area that they are losing. I leave my 360 on for 12 hours at a time downloading all of the nice content via Xbox Live, no over heating problems for me, and if their was such activity availible for Xbox users rest assured we would participate. Last time I checked Xbox 360 was a game console that was meant for entertainment an area in which it is dominating right now so to say it wouldnt be good at it this sort of thing is not much of an insult.

No,I play games, but if you think that Folding at home is unnecessary on the Ps3 then you clearly shouldnt be giving donations to cancer organizations.

Where did i say it was unnecessary? I said that it doesn't interest me because i already donate money. Does that bother you in some way? Heh, move on.

"... then you clearly shouldn't be giving donations to cancer organizations." Stupidest comment of the day.

I understand what he's saying...he's right to.

Yea, apparently because i don't want Folding@home or a PS3 for that matter, i'm an evil person who should stop donating to an organization that is trying to help people.

People help in different ways, i have money to donate whereas others might not. If people can't wrap their head around the fact that i don't want Folding@home because i donate money already then that's their problem.

You implied that.

Yes,it does bother me,because I actually know in one way or another in the long run,Folding@Home can actually help cancer victims.

Anyways, have fun playing 360 ports lol!

Eh... maybe because this is system wars. If you wanted THAT kind of thread why don't you move this to the Playstation forum. I wasn't the one who brought up the 360 overheating issue. My comments were in no way meant to insult any efforts at finding a cure for cancer. I was responding to users who were bashing the 360. The cows started it.
