I guess I'm lucky that I bought my 360 to play games and not to perform complex mathematical calculations.

You guys have fun with folding @ home... if that's possible.

mruurds
Those complex mathematical equations might save your life or someone you love's life one day so that you can both continue to play games.

Like I said... it's a noble cause. All I'm saying is that I'd rather dedicate my PC at home to doing something like this rather than a PS3. My PC has a dual-core processor and would be ultimately more suited to a task like this one. I'm sure that it would also be more power-efficient and generate less heat. There are also millions more PCs than PS3s. My point is that a gaming console should be used for gaming. That is just my opinion. You guys are welcome to yours and kudos to you for taking part in this project. If it is ever offered to PC users then I'll also join in. Mike

Sony is not forcing you too run folding@home...their are going too be good games on the PS3 later but not right now...I also have my PC running programs like that but it wont hurt if I use this program on my PS3 because 2 processors are better than one.

[QUOTE="Puckhog04"]Heh, i suppose if you're not having any games to play then curing cancer is a good time filler. ragrdoll21

Yeah, since games are more important than one of the principle causes of death, right  ?

So you're essentially using the PS3 to cure cancer instead of playing games? That must make you feel real good at night. I donate money to cancer organizations, i don't need to do it on a system.

No,I play games, but if you think that Folding at home is unnecessary on the Ps3 then you clearly shouldnt be giving donations to cancer organizations.

Where did i say it was unnecessary? I said that it doesn't interest me because i already donate money. Does that bother you in some way? Heh, move on.

"... then you clearly shouldn't be giving donations to cancer organizations." Stupidest comment of the day.

I understand what he's saying...he's right to.

So you think that, because i don't want Folding@home or even have/want a PS3 to begin with, i should stop donating to help find the cure for cancer? Wow, yea, that's definitely logical.

It's great that they have this and i commend them for trying to do something to help, but i contribute in a different way. It's really not that tough to understand.

No your essentially using the PS3 to help researchers when you are NOT playing games. It's not that difficult of a concept to wrap your mind around. It's great that you give money to cancer research and I'm sure it's appreciated. But if you or someone you knew had cancer what would be the harm in also leaving your game system on to crunch some numbers at night? If you don't need to do it then don't. Give yourself another pat on the back for donating money and have a nice day.

My aunt died of cancer, i'm very much aware of what Cancer can do, thanks. I wasn't saying it was unnecessary, relax people.

Sorry to hear about your aunt.  I'm sure she was an awesome lady.  Too bad diseases are sometimes indiscriminant in who they attack.

This thread WAS about that, but fat pregnant cows quickly made it about competition, an area that they are losing. I leave my 360 on for 12 hours at a time downloading all of the nice content via Xbox Live, no over heating problems for me, and if their was such activity availible for Xbox users rest assured we would participate. Last time I checked Xbox 360 was a game console that was meant for entertainment an area in which it is dominating right now so to say it wouldnt be good at it this sort of thing is not much of an insult.

No,you must've ignored/skipped past the previous messages where a Microsoft fan started bashing Ps3 owners for using Folding@Home.

I doubt the 360 can stay on for 12 hours,a 360 was on at Toys R Us for 6 hours and it overheated.

You implied that.

Yes,it does bother me,because I actually know in one way or another in the long run,Folding@Home can actually help cancer victims.

Anyways, have fun playing 360 ports lol!

If this project really can help find a cure for cancer or some treatment that can help ease cancer sufferers' pain then it's truly worthy of whatever time you decide to devote to it. Don't mistake my joking and attempts at SW fanboyism as being anything other than joking about on a Friday evening after a long hard day of crunching numbers of my own. Have a great weekend lads/ladies. There's a beer at home with my name on it. Mike

That 360 was probably using a lot more of the system resources outside of the CPU then Folding@home would be using. We don't know what causes 360's to fry other then "hardware problems". We don't know what specific piece of hardware is frying out. It's entirely possible it could be a piece of hardware that folding never touches. Folding primarily uses the CPU, a tiny bit of the GPU, and the internet connection once in awhile to pick up new packets etc. Gaming uses just about everything in the case, which means gaming stresses more of the hardware.

I wonder if the money that you spend on the increased electricity from running this would be better served if i just donated it to cancer research... and getting a tax write off too.

Probably not. The Xbox 360 isn't strong enough to cure cancer. Maybe when Xbox 720 comes out, but the PS3 would have cured cancer by then.Twisted_Hawk

[QUOTE="mercclass"]I guess I was too naive to think that people wouldn't turn this into a PS3/360 flaming thread. My fault.
cheatymcshifty
Lol, every thread turns into one here, (at least half the posts). And, nice sig, didnt he say that no one would need more than 256kb though? thats what i thought it was. People that thing technology somhow reached a standstill are ignant.. it will always keep advancing (exponential curve) You know that the director of the US patent office said that "everything meaningful that can be invented, has been invented" in like 1905 (random, i know, but i always put those two quotes in the same pool).. you think people in there industries would know about their industries better. (But few people accuse bill gates of being a genius).

I believe that was 1899. 1905 was when Einstein wrote his papers on special relativity, Brownian motion, and the photoelectric effect.

When you think about it, Sony should've gone with SETI@Home. If we make contact with an advanced alien civilization, they're likely to have cures for cancer AS WELL AS faster than light travel.

Seriously, the odds may be worse but the rewards? AMAZING.

No, i didn't imply that. Learn2read. I stated that i wouldn't use it and that i donate money already so it's not something that i would look into using. It bothers you? Cry me a river. Your opinion isn't something that i value. If anyone knows the effects of Cancer it's me (my aunt died of cancer) so spare me your "I'm going to save the world with the PS3" act. I donate money and therefore don't have an interest in Folding@home. Keep in mind i haven't told you how much i donate...

If you don't agree with this then that's your problem. Go and worry about it in your offtime if you wish.

It's 'won't', and you forgot to put spaces after your commas. If you're going to poke fun at someone's writing skills, I suggest you proofread your own post fairly thoroughly. (Now, inevitably, I will make an egregious grammatical error in this post.) -John

Alright, that's your opinion.By the way,in school where I learned to read,I was taught that putting numbers where letters should be and thinking that it makes sense is a rookie error in the English language. So I wont "Learn2read". But nice debating with you, have a nice day :)

When you think about it, Sony should've gone with SETI@Home. If we make contact with an advanced alien civilization, they're likely to have cures for cancer AS WELL AS faster than light travel.

Seriously, the odds may be worse but the rewards? AMAZING.

Or they could've invested in next-gen food!

My 360 also makes a damn fine pastrami on rye. Can your PS3 make the same claim? I THOUGHT NOT. XBOX 360 - Game system, confidante, 5-star cook -John

[QUOTE="Puckhog04"]Heh, i suppose if you're not having any games to play then curing cancer is a good time filler. Dualshockin

I do to, but no matter what was said before it, ever ending a sentence with that statement is just stupid. He should have said something else.

Like what?"Yours sincerely,Dualshockin" :|  ?

Yes, that would have worked. Something like "...then you are obviously hearltess." or something to at least try and support your argument. What I think was stupid is that you would ever suggest to ANYONE that they shouldn't donate money to cancer organizations. And just so you know folding@home isn't "necessary" on the PS3 in my opinion either. Does that mean I shouldn't donate to cancer organizations? Hell no. Am I going to be turning on my PS3 to do folding while I am at work? Hell yes. It's cool, a great idea, a great cause, but not necessary on the PS3.

Yes,it does bother me,because I actually know in one way or another in the long run,Folding@Home can actually help cancer victims.

Anyways, have fun playing 360 ports lol!

I only have a 360 for Mass Effect and really don't play it. I play PC games, that's about it. So spare me your assumptions when you know nothing about me.

No, i didn't imply that. Learn2read. I stated that i wouldn't use it and that i donate money already so it's not something that i would look into using. It bothers you? Cry me a river. CONGRATULATIONS!!! You've gained enough experience to level up to a level 32 Internet Spell Checker. You now have gained access to the ability "lookup definitions" which is very helpful against the level 36 forum trolls you will be encountering in the next thread. Experience needed until next level: 250 internet spelling corrections.

It's a really interesting and cool concept. When you go into Folding @ Home there's a globe that you can browse through and there is a yellow dot for each Playstation 3 owner in the world that is currently online.

Sony should release "Al-qaeda Friendly" PS3's, market them as being able to guide missiles (to promote sales), then have them show up as red dots on the Folding@Home world map. Now where is that Al-qaeda leader? O wait..let's check our PS3's. Fanboys "PS3 WON THE WAR ON TERROR, EAT THAT LEMMINGS!!!"

I trust my PS3 to cure cancer not my xbox 360.

cheatymcshifty

lol that pic of the 360 made me spit my coke back out . because it was darn funny

I didnt think it was halirous or anything.. but it was exactly what i was thinking.. I know the lems will come in and say "well, i play 8 hours a day since launch and am fine" but.. the fact is, the 360 overheats and has alot more hardware errors than ps3 (period) so leaving it on all night / during work/ when your watching tv../ doing anything other than playing video games (on it) would be more risky than doing so on Ps3.

you really dont get it do you the 360 doesnt get hot when its idle it warms up when it plays games I leave mine idle all the time just downloading things have done for over a year now and had no problems.

I dont see any reason why the 360 wouldn't be able to run folding@home. The folding@home project had a client that run on the ATI X1900 (not sure if also was the X1800) GPU's (in other words, not the CPU) so I dont see why they couldn't make a client that runs on the 360 GPU either since it is an ATI GPU. As for overheating problems - it all depends where the "issue" is. if it is on the CPu the running it on the GPu wouldn't do much. If it is on the GPU then using 1 core of the 3 CPu cores might work.

I've been running Folding@home on my various home PC's but in the end I've started to question if I want to use up as much power that it does. On one hand it is great to be able to help in research, on the other hand not only does it costs money to keep a machine running all the time (and the damn prices just keep going up) but in an age where there is a lot of discussions on how to reduce the power usage makes me hesitant to start up yet another machine to run full time.

Do you realize how much trouble Sony will be in if PS3's were purchased in mass quantity for the purpose of number crunching?

I'll clue you in. It's a result of an astronomical investment in R&D, loss in each console sale, and no Blu-Ray or game sales.
