Too bad there are way more blue-ray divices (including PS3s) in peoples homes... And Blue ray disc sales/rentals are owning HDVDVD sales/ rentals

And BTW target is now only carrying Blue Ray set top boxes. It still has the HD DVD drive for 360 however. Large retailers have been dropping support for HD-DVD left and right...

I can't beleive there are still HDDVD supporters around.

apparently EU is 74% in support of hd dvd....

I wouldn't have used that as concrete proof myself but hey... And they are obviously not counting PS3 sales in EU which are alot more than the set top boxes themselves.

this format war has nearly been won for Blu-ray after they've taken most of the studios to their side with one(warner bros, i think) that produces for both hddvd and blu-ray. And hddvd onlyhas universal studios. PlusBlockbuster decided toputmore blu-ray movies on store shelves throughout theUSand practically stopping hddvd from gaining anything.

think logically people. If you wanted 360 + hddvd or a ps3 in terms of entertainment (movies), ps3 is the way to go.

The ps3 is not considered a player by industry standards as customers of the ps3 are NOT guaranteed to use it to watch movies...

with hd dvd players they ARE guaranteed to use it for movies and greater movie sales...;)

tango90101

but unfortunatly for HDDVD they DO. Not as much as the people who have the stand alone players, but there are ALOT more PS3 owners than HDDVD owners of any kind...

so were only talking standalone players here? in that case, i have not done my reaserch, but i can understand if HD-DVD sales are doing better than blue-ray. That is, if were just talking standalone players. But why would nobody include the best selling blue ray player in the market? Also doesn't blue ray have more studio support? Isnt that really more important?

The onemajor advantage that HD DVD has over BluRay that can help its salesis, simply, its name. People that don't know what a format is and aren't up to date with new technologies aren't going to by something that's called a Blu Ray when they don't even know what it does. On the other hand, they are more likely to lean toward buying something called a HD DVD. The term DVD has been around for years andeven technologically obsolete people know what it does. That's a big advantage.

The market for next-generation DVDs of either stripe is tiny so far, though. Through June, Blu-ray had sold about 1.8 million discs, compared with 1.3 million for HD DVD, according to consultancy Adams Media Research. A top title such as Warner Bros.' "The Departed," which was out in both formats, shipped 85,000 copies in Blu-ray and 60,000 in HD DVD, compared with 7.7 million for regular DVDs.

These days, Blu-ray discs are outselling HD DVDs at a rate of about two to one, says Tom Adams, president at Adams Media. But that doesn't mean HD DVDs can't reclaim the advantage if more studios start releasing movies in both formats.

Once either format hits about two million homes, it will create a large enough incentive for any studio not releasing titles in that format to reconsider, Mr. Adams says. Currently, about 105,000 homes have Blu-ray players, and about 150,000 have HD DVD players. An additional 1.5 million homes have PlayStation 3 devices, which also play Blu-ray movies, although fewer gamers are using the machines to play movies than had been hoped for. About 160,000 consumers have bought add-on devices for Xbox machines that allow them to play HD DVDs. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB118341745768555943.html?mod=home_whats_news_us

Yup. The worst HD DVD player on the market. No upscaling of DVD's. What a waste of money. Not even an HDMI input for the thing.

No way. Not until the next wave of consoles will Microsoft even consider using Blu-ray. Blu-ray would have to be the absolute, no question about it, winner of the format war. Microsoft is going to avoid using Blu-ray and making Sony money in any way possible.

People also aren't going to jump into the next gen format by spending hundreds of dollars without getting knowledge of the product they are buying, and it's competitors offerings.

I think HD-DVD will pick up sound ground this winter only because of the lower costs; however, by 2008 PS3 sales combined with the exclusive Blu-Ray support will knock HD-DVD out once and for all.

Who cares about sales figures? Remember that Sony will win it always does. Doesn't everyone here now own a PSP and a crap load of UMD movies. Man those UMDs revolutionized the movie industry with all the support from studios. And then there was the recordable Minidisc format that knocked out CDs a few years back. I love my MinidiscWalkman alot! And then in the 80s they dominated with the superior Beta format. So going back it is Sony domination after Sony domination with no end in sight. They have the best formats that is why they will always win.

Yup. Enjoy paying more for the combo set on HD DVDfor 300.

Blu ray copy is cheaper. And its outselling the HD DVD copy at amazon.com. Just like all blu ray discs outsell HD DVD's.

I agree, the format war is a pain. I've held off on buying DVDs so I can get them on a HD format once a standard has been chosen. But I can't take it anymore!

I'm surprisingly enticed by the HD-DVD player price drop and inclusion of 5 free movies. Especially with HD-DVD combo discs that I could buy now and use in the future, I might just have to go get one of those players. I'd prefer HD-DVD to win because I don't agree with Sony's blu-ray strategy.

Fignewton50

blu-ray is offering 5 free movies as well with the purchase of any blu-ray player including ps3.

Yeah, I've heard that too. But HD-DVD add-on for the 360 is way cheaper than a stand alone blu-ray player or PS3. I have a hard time paying $180 for a movie player, let alone $500.

I agree. I recently bought the movie 300 on standard DVD format. So when there is a definate format winner I could get the movies I wanted in HD then for a cheaper price. So I'm in no rush rush in buying any HD standalone players right now. And thank the heavens for Xbox Live Marketplace, they'll have 300 in HD downloadable on Aug 14 or so. And I like HD DVD players more because you have more choices for viewing movies and could upconvert DVDs while on the PS3 you can't do that.

HD DVD is toshiba...universal...and the suckers who pay more for combo discs.

ReverseCycology

blu-ray is offering 5 free movies as well with the purchase of any blu-ray player including ps3.

Yeah, I've heard that too. But HD-DVD add-on for the 360 is way cheaper than a stand alone blu-ray player or PS3. I have a hard time paying $180 for a movie player, let alone $500.

I agree. I recently bought the movie 300 on standard DVD format. So when there is a definate format winner I could get the movies I wanted in HD then. So I'm in no rush rush in buying any HD standalone players right now. And thank the heavens for Xbox Live Marketplace, they'll have 300 in HD downloadable on Aug 14 or so. And I like HD DVD players more because you have more choices for viewing movies and could upconvert DVDs while on the PS3 you can't that.

sony released firmware 2 months ago that upscales all dvd's and ps2 games to 1080p, blu-ray has just as many titles as hd-dvd, probably more now,so i dont get where you get more choices

[QUOTE="Bdking57"]This with the $199 christmas HD DVD players = death to blu ray. Standalone HD DVD sales already outweight blu ray 3:1asdasd

No. :|

you may want to research before posting again..

he was right...;)

No he isn't, there are over 5 million Blu-Ray players out there(including PS3) and the movies are selling. HD-DVD is going to get steamrolled by Spider Man 3, POTC3, and other Disney Movies. HD-DVD is dead and the price cut was nothing more than desperation.

Go back to getting owned by the mods.

You know... I never thought Id agree with tango, but do you see the word STANDALONE in there? Hes talking about only HDDVD and Bluray players, not the 360 addon or the PS3

Blu Ray movies have been saleing a whole lot better plus there is no company that makes HD DVD's as exclusives the majority use Blu Ray

This is about as signficant as the post that said PS3 had a 187% increase in sales for the week.

you people are really grasping for straws aren't you?

The ps3 is not considered a player by industry standards as customers of the ps3 are NOT guaranteed to use it to watch movies...

with hd dvd players they ARE guaranteed to use it for movies and greater movie sales...;)

Trading_Zoner

but unfortunatly for HDDVD they DO. Not as much as the people who have the stand alone players, but there are ALOT more PS3 owners than HDDVD owners of any kind...

how many more EXACTLY? with link please...;)

btw; the players don't start selling until they hit a $299 price point or lower for standalone players... traditionally..

hd dvd hasn't hit that point yet, but do so waaaaay before bluray does...and gues what's gonna happen..;)

yep..buh bye bloooray...

enough to make software sales of blueray discs pummel HDDVD disc sales in the face...

And you are funny with those "buh bye blooray" comments. You amuse me, really.

sony is counting the FREE bluray movies given w/ the ps3 as a "sale"...

btw; software sales are not as important as hardware base.. and hd dvd players are trouncing bluray players 3 to 1...;)

spin it any way sony tells you to, but it won't change the fact the world doesn't want bluray....

We'll see buddy. I am no Bluray fanboy or anything so i don't want to get into an argument with an obvious HDDVD fanboy. I've got a reputation to look after. :P

if the ps3 was outselling the competition 3 to 1 you guys would SWEAR the competitions over...

why the difference here?

yep...no fanboy here...

A lot of articles on the HD war state that the amount of Blu Ray and HD DVD sales next to DVD sales are miniscule. Sure, the two camps are fighting but the spoils could turn out to be nothing. By the time HD movies start to take off, there could be a new format in the fight or downloads could have a bigger piece of the pie.

Umm...PS3 upscales all DVD's and via HDMI to boot.

More viewing choices? Um....you won't get spiderman, star wars, or the pirate movies on HD DVD. Sounds like its a LIMITED format if you enjoy all kinds of movies. (Thats Disney, Sony, and Fox exclusive studio support.) But hey if you want Evan Almighty and not Spiderman 3 in HD...by all means...be my guest.

HD DVD is cheaper which will boost its sales onc eit hits the sweet spot, although the playstation will boost sales I dont think that many will take the oppurtunity such as with the PS2. Although who really cares just get the format that wins in the end, I wish they would hurry up I want me some HD.

Oh I get it HD DVD "standalone" players aren't doing that bad compared to Blu Ray "standalone" players. People just think Blu Ray is the winning format because they include Blu Ray "standalone" players sales with PS3 sales.

ReverseCycology

Just to let you know 300 sold out almost everywhere for blu ray... It truly doesnt matter whether it's a stand alone player or not as long as the movies are selling and HD DVD movies dont sell what so ever.

Uh huh..and yet every blu ray titles outsells its HD DVD counterpart. Lets not start mentioning studio support, target, blockbuster, and just the whole friggin industry!

HD DVD is toshiba...universal...and the suckers who pay more for combo discs.

1. i don't know your claim is accurate about all multi format titles sellilng best on bluray... from you inaccuracies in the past, i'm gonna say "i don't believe you"... some proof would be nice.... a list of ALL multiformat titles would be nice..

2. "the whole friggin industry" is not backing bluray..that's only what fnaboys want you to belive..

the global porn market is with hd dvd, EU indy studios are backing hd dvd exclusively.. and many of the studios are not putting their eggs in one basket.. if so, disney wouldn't be releasign HDmovies on xbox live...

you forgot netflix... hd dvd friendly...

out for the day... bye nooblets...:)

why the hell do people care about standalone players? its about the Disc sales and currently blu ray is outselling hd-dvd 2-1. and also the xbox 360 hd-dvd players are not standalone they connect to your xbox 360 and sucks all the power out of it causing you another trip to the repair store

Sorry but BLu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD here in UK like 5:1. Overall Blu-Ray will sell far more. HD-DVD has nothign going for it.

i bet you MS will eventually abandon hd-dvd and release a blu-ray addon by next year.mmirza23
Yea they said as much last year claiming they will support the leader. This price drop is to clear out old stock imo cause they know hd-dvd is dead.

"Since Microsoft $20 pricedrop, Amazon has sold 1,000% more Xbox 360 HD DVD players (today the figure reads 200%, while might even mean double the 1,000% figure). Maybe it was the allure of five free HD DVD movies, or maybe it was the possibility of an extra twenty spot in consumers wallets."

The winner of the format war is still way too early.
