Well, if the talk around the office at Warner turns out true the wake this announcement has caused hasn't even come close to hitting yet. My guy at Warner says a lot of the talk coming from the upper level guys at WHV is going something like this:

1. Toshiba ending HD DVD stand alone production within 8 weeks.
2. MS will be notifying retailers to liquidate any remaining 360 add-ons.
3. P/DW will be allowed out of their contract.
4. Universal will be canceling production of HD discs with a BD launch date as early as Q3 2008.
5. The BDA made a nearly $300 million dollar package of marketing incentives, production incentives, and cash payments to get Warner to switch now.
6. The HD DVD promo group recently offered a similar package totaling $350 million.

He says 2 and 3 could be announced as soon as Monday. 1 and 4 might be a little ways off.

Ohh my....sorry Lemmings

Wow, if this is true. I didn't think they would throw in the towel this fast. But if it's true, this is only good for the consumers.

Lucky MS didn't make HD DVD standard on their console, then they'd be really screwed.

IF TRUE then this is a major blow to HD-dvd, and also means the ultimate would be canned or the drive at least.

I don't own HD-DVD add-ons. So I could care less. I'm sure we'll see a better format within the next 4-5yrs, so all of this is for not anyways.

Huh why? I bet you all of the top brass at Sony are sitting in their penthouses smoking fine Cubans and laughing.

I didn't think this would have happened to early, but wow, it's been a while since Sony has done anything right, and this was a big win for them.

Who cares? Even if Blu Ray wins there is a good chance that it will never take over for DVD before people start getting their HD content from other sources such as online and on-demand from their cable company. It could be a short-lived victory. So far HD discs are only being used by some PS3 owners and some early adopters.

Honestly, it is tough to tell the difference between an upscaled DVD and an HD disc on HD TVs smaller than 40 inches. So why are people going to spend extra? What is going to compel the average consumer to upgrade to HD discs, especially those who already have a collection of DVDs?

It's good news for Sony, but it's not exactly bad for the MS gaming division. It's not going to hurt the 360 at all.

If multi billion dollar corporations see the beneficial factors of jumping ship a better HD format, it's because a group of people in those companies looking at the long term forcast, see a brighter and nicer future for that certain format.

I don't believe that HD media will become the norm now, but give it a year or so, and I suspect it will matter.

Newer, Enhanced or Mastered in High Definition DVDs can look good with a high quality upconverter(see something most people won't have), but a good HDM will still clearly look better.

Personally, older DVDs look like garbage when you try to upconvert to an HD TV. I find S-video and my TV doing the scaling works best, but then the image looks soft and the blacks bleed.

Where are your sources? Some forum poster?
On the internet I can say I work at TimeWarner and that as a NASA employee I've developed Space Fuel out of chocolate.
