Xbox 360 HD-DVD Drive. $72 dollars?!

I still think M$ should release a Blu-Ray drive for the 360. -supercharged-

I don't think there's enough information to declare either format dead yet.  Everyone seems to think their crystal ball is right regarding this "war" however. 

Here's how I made my decision as to which format to support.

List all the movies you want in HD. List any movie that comes out this year that you want in HD.

Check out which studios those movies come from, and which format they are supporting.

You will have your answer.

MY opinion...don't bother with HD DVD. And I'm a HUGE movie geek and I'll tell ya its not going to get some of the biggest titles of the year.

not for the time being. the average 1080p movie with 5.1 dolby digital plus is about 25gb. at that size it could hours if not a couple of days to download a movie at 700kbps or even 1mbps. while cable companies do offer speeds as high as 10mbps (the one i have is 7mbps, damn you time warner, get with the times) that's a theoretical speed assuming no one near you or in your neighborhood has a cable modem or even cable tv and if the cable company gives you the full allotment of bandwidth required for those speeds. in reality however, you'll be lucky to stream a video at 1.5mbps with no stutter or rebuffer. verizon fios however gives speeds upto 30mbps but even then that's not enough to download a full 1080p video in under an hour.

hd ppv, hdtv, and hd on demand are good ideas but the quality of an hd video feed from cable or satellite is laughable compared to hd dvd or bd. the average hd stream from directv or twc/comcast/io is between 10mbps to 15mbps. the average for hd dvd and bd is 20mbps. not to mention in fast moving action scenes like sports or action movies with a lot of on screen action, you will be able to see artifacting at its worst. this form of artifacting is known as macroblocking.

eventually downloadable hd content and broadcast hd cotent will replace the optical format, but that won't be for another 10 years minimum.

If MS did release a blu-ray add-on, it would only function with the Elite since HDMI is part of the Blu-Ray requirement.

Did you expect the HD-DVD drive to stay at $200 forever??  While the Toshiba HDA2 goes from $699 MSRP, to $299

While the  Toshiba HDXA2 goes from $1000 to $550

While the Samsung BDP1000 Bluray player goes from MSRP of $1000 to a street price of $450

Did you expect it to stay at $199 when $199 Standalone players wil be at Walmart Fall/Winter?

This invention enabled the development of small, convenient and low priced blue, violet and ultraviolet UV lasers which had not been available before and opened the way for applications such as high-density HD DVD data storage and BD（Blu-ray Disc）. The shorter wavelength allows it to read discs containing much more information.

Blue laser light usually has a relatively low input-to-power efficiency. Blue lasers usually operate at around 472 nanometers.

The use of indium gallium nitride as a semiconductor material suitable for formation of quantum heterostructures has been proposed. Recently, CdS/ZnS quantum dots have been used as the gain material in spherical Whispering Gallery Mode lasers; see Applied Physics Letters, 2005, 86:073102.

Shuji Nakamura built his blue laser prototype from the gallium nitride crystal developed by Unipress, the Warsaw Center for High Pressure Research, part of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Also, answer me this...Where is "Blu-ray" in the original chinese article? I don't see "Blu-ray" anywhere, only "HD DVD" they even spelt "HD DVD" correctly, without the hyphen. The trademarked name is "HD DVD" not "HD-DVD"

It makes no sense, Blu-ray is also trademarked, just like HD DVD, DVD, TDK, and Walmart. So Blu-ray would be in English if they meant Blu-ray

Which means "Blu-ray High Definition Disk"

You don't know what your talking about.

HD DVD and BD movies only get downscaled if they have Image Contraint Tokens (ICT's)

Currently,  no HD DVD or BD movie has an ICT tag.  

It is said movie studios won't start adding ICT tags until 2011-2012.

So currently,  you can watch 1080p via component,  so long as your HDTV accepts 1080p over component.  And many new HDTV's do accept 1080p over component

It's essentially saying that a Taiwanese company "福彥電子公司" is preparing to produce HD DVD players for foreigners. This year, they will produce 20 million units to the United States and will be sold by Walmart. It's a TW$10,100,000 venture. These units are going to be built with it's Japanese partner TDK with it's factories in China. It will be worth USD$100,000. Then it goes something like that it hits markets on July 12, 2007.
