xbox 360 wii u knockoff

Nintendo stated last E3 that it was afraid the competition would copy its 'innovations' soon, that the turnover time wasn't as much anymore, but this is kind of a new record.

Is Microsoft going to go for the Wii U route next gen?

Probably a PC dev tool.... probably. Could be oh so wrong though, Microsoft seems to follow Nintendo closely now.

720 will suck if this is the case. Leave the innovation to Nintendo and give me games if you want me to buy your next system.

Wasn't there some article that someone posted, where Valve was designing new pc hardware? Saying stuff like "pc input devices aren't innovating" 'n such?

". Were frustrated by the lack of innovation in the computer hardware space, though, so were jumping in, the listing read. Even basic input, the keyboard and mouse, havent really changed in any meaningful way over the years.-www.nytimes.com/2012/09/09/technology/valve-a-video-game-maker-with-few-rules.html?pagewanted=2&_r=2

This begs the question... what kind of PC development would require a screen on the controller?

This is a Microsoft controller. Probably the tablet controller they will introduce for the Xbox and Windows 8 next gen. Valve's comment seems to have yielded the Virtual Reality helmet thingy.

nintendo trying to claim touch screen tech as their own is hilarious. Looks to me like the nintendo controller is way late to the party seeing as I can already sim race on my PC using my CSR Elite wheel and having the car dashboard output to my iphone. Or using my iphone as a blu tooth remote for my blu ray RW drive in my PC. Sorry nintendo, but you're a copy-cat just like everyone else.

When or where did Nintendo ever claim the touch screen controller as its own? Oh, also, in case you have forgotten Nintendo was first out of the gate with gaming applications for touch screens with the DS, back in 2004. Eight years ago. Before the iPhone, and before the CSR Elite Racing Wheel. So yes, Nintendo did innovate the touch screen. Keep trying to downplay their contributions though.

Has the DS simply ceased to exist? If I am not mistaken it was the first system in gaming to feature a touch screen. I can understand you are jealous of Nintendo being the innovative driving force in gaming and that you want to try and convince yourself that they are just imitators, but at least try and know what you are talking about next time.

They probably bought it from MS as a developer tool, pretty sure lots of companies do this, in fact the whole PS3 usb key thingy was a developer tool as well.

I don't know, actually. Microsoft did create the Xbox for Windows controller this generation, and that went on to become exceedingly popular, so it is entirely possible that this 'next gen' controller prototype was sent to Valve by Microsoft so that they would be able to support it in all their games? Just a hunch, I'd say.

I used to play in one of these, in a pub close to my house, in early 90s. But i agree Nintendo perfected touch screen gaming with DS.

I think it's more likely a convenience thing (if MS are developing this new controller). Simply press the button you want and instead of pressing the Dash button and cycling to the one you want it all happens at the touch of a button, maybe even be able to cycle music with it as well, would be a handy controller indeed.

Looking down at your controller during gameplay is a huge no-no. Imagine how much you'd suck if you had to look down to see your button placement instead of intuitively knowing? Any use of these screens will most likely be for non essential things like your map and GPS setting in driving games, or select a play option for Madden, or read send an Xbox Live message, or browse your friendslist type stuff as well as a visual remote control for your media centre.

It would be awesome for a game like Skyrim, to navigate in menus and inventory. But then again, Nintendo have been using the second screen as inventary for almost a decade.

Charizard delivers the goods again.

I suspected this might happen. But I find it strange that the picture is from Valve. What's going on here?

  • Is it MS' prototype controller on loan to Valve?
  • Is Valve developing the controller for MS?
  • Is it a prototype made by Valve, with bits and bobs salvaged from other hardware (like the 360 controller's buttons)?
  • Insert other possible scenarios here.

The most interesting part of that picture for me is at the bottom in the middle. Is that the neck and headstock of a four string bass? Is that a Commodore 64?

Yes. I was wondering about that. I guess that people who bought those messenger kits can send the keyboards to /dev/null.

Hah! Gotta admit it does kinda look like it.

Honestly, that would be the best thing ever for The WiiU. If the tablet controller were to become a multiplat feature, more devs would actually develop useful content for it. Left alone, it's more likely to be like Sony's Sixaxis. I'll still wait for confirmation, but sheep shouldn't be so quick to rage about the possibility.
