I can see why more people bought the 360 in 2006 and 2007. But now, in 2008, I can't understand why people would choose the 360 over the PS3. It's like choosing HD DVD vs. Blu-ray. The facts and reasons are so clear. The advantages the 360 had over the PS3 seem to be vanishing or have vanished altogether. Worse, the disadvantages have become more apparent.

The 360 no longer enjoys the following advantages:

1. Multiplatform games were better on the 360. In 2008, this is no longer true. According to Gamepro, after analyzing the last 4 major mulitplats, recent multiplats are better on the PS3.

2. Monthly world-wide sales. In 2008, this is no longer true. The PS3 even sold more in the USA in January, and most likely in February, too.

3. Exclusive games were better on the 360. In 2008, smart money says the PS3 will have bigger, better exclusives.

4. HD movies capability. Now with HD DVD dead, there's no way to watch 1080p HD movies. The PS3 is widely considered the best Blu-ray player.

5. Positive press. In 2006 and 2007, the 360 seemed to have a lot of positive press while the PS3 had to endure many negative attacks. In 2008, it's the PS3 that seems to have a better press.

6. In 2006 and 2007, retailers like Best Buy usually encouraged their customers to buy the 360 because it had more games. In 2008, however, there are reports, it seems reasonable to me, that Best Buy and other retailers prefer to sell the PS3 instead of the 360, because by selling the PS3, they can also expect customers to buy Blu-ray movies and other HD products, like TVs.

7. Rumbe. Last year, the 360 had rumble but the PS3 didn't. This year, the PS3 added rumble. With motion sensing, controller advantage now goes to the PS3.

The 360's disadvantages remain and are now more apparent:

1. Lack of disk space by using DVD9. In 2008, developers no longer need to spend much time creating game engines. Now they can spend more time creating content, lots of content. The PS3's Blu-ray becomes more and more useful. Apprently, Metal Gear Solid 4 uses ALL of the 50 gig in Blu-ray. Imagine that. DVD9 has only 8.5 gigs.

2. Processing power. In 2006 and 2007, the 360 seems to more than hold its own vs. the PS3 in terms of game graphics. Now in 2008, developers, especially Sony's first party ones, seem more determined to take advantage of the Cell processor to make kick-ass games. The PS3's cell processor allows Insomniac to create amazing graphics with large enviroments and 60 players on-line. Likewise, Kilzone 2 seems to show how the PS3's power cannot be matched by any game on the 360.

3. Reliability issues. Still a major, major problem for the 360. Every day, it seems, someone make a post that their 360 has reliabilty issues like the Red Ring of Death or Disk read problems. Towards the end of this year, when many 360s start to run out of warranty, expect hear an uproar from angry gamers.

4. The 360 continues to be the most anti-casual of the 3 consoles. LIVE fees must be paid to play online and it's best games usually require online play. The best games on the 360, too are hard-core. After 5 years of ownership, LIVE fees will add up to $250, which means it costs more to own the 360, which can't even play Blu-ray! As such, analysts are predicting that Wii owners will move up to the PS3 instead of the 360. Also, the PS3's built-in Blu-ray will certainly help with the casuals.

5. Noise. To some it doesn't matter. To others it does. The 360 is very noisy compared to the PS3. This makes it less likely for Microsoft to make the Blu-ray add-on for the 360. What happens during the silent part of the game or movie, and you hear this buzzing noise from the 360?

6. Lack of built-in hard disk drives for all consoles. This becomes an issue for games that can take advantage of disk-drives. I for one, would rather spend 20 minutes or so installing a game if it means significantly less loading times later on. Devil May Cry 4 is an example. Surely, more developers will take advantage of the disk drive more later on.

So, I ask: Does anyone still think the 360 is a better buy than the PS3? I think if you care about your friends or relatives, you should recommend the PS3 and not the 360, unless you friends only want to play exclusive games on the 360 AND can afford the LIVE fees AND don't mind dealing with reliability issues.

The choice between the 360 vs. the PS3 is similar to the choice between HD DVD and Blu-ray. The facts and reasons suggest that Blu-ray is a better buy. Now, it IS the better buy. HD DVD is dead.

so you typed up all of the advantages that the 360 has lost and all of the disadvantages that remain for it without giving the advantages and disadvantegs for the ps3 and advantages lost for the ps3? this seems like a kind of one sided topic...

It seems one-sided because the facts and wise reasoning favor the PS3 far more. I dare anyone to do the same in a factual, reasonable way to favor the 360. They can't. Not nearly as well. Because the facts are against the 360.

Well I can sum up the bad for ps3 :)

Small audience-(subject to change)

Live is hard to navigate- Although its not impossible to get together with friends, it still would be better if it was as easy as XBL

Game library isn't all that appealing...This is subject to change when May/and beyond comes. Although for the small library that ps3 has, it actually has a lot of games that are fun and worth buying.

----------------------

A few good things

Free wifi and online(online play is great and lag free)

Outstanding graphics compared to 360 imo(and yes I did have a 360 at one point in time)

Controller is real light...I like this personally

Lots of HDD space

People just dont look at games anymore do they. People seem to look at systems for what they can do and not them actually doing it. but GeoW and Halo 3 are good enough for me to buy a 360.

I think you are thinking short term, that's why. The PS3 already has many good exclusives and multiplats and it lets you watch Blu-ray movies. This year, Metal Gear Solid 4, HOME, Gran Turismo, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Litte Big Planet, etc. You do plan to watch DVD movies, too, right? Perhaps share an HD movie experience with your girl later?

That's why many gamers make a mistake such as buying the HD DVD add-on, which came before the PS3.

my only problem with most of the ps3 versions of multiplats is the fact that most of them are in 720p instead of 1080i.....why doesnt ps3 make 1080i more mandatory

I paid $400 for my PS3 to play GAMES,not to watch movies. And the last time i played my PS3 was 2 months ago.But really 360 has its own problems as well as the PS3.But its really what you want,if you want to play the best games using the best online service but with a high risk of your console breaking go with the 360,if you want to watch movies and wait for good games to come out and dont mind using a horrible online service like PSN then get a PS3.I dont know about other PS3 owners but i bought my PS3 for MGS4.

Sometimes a little waiting is better. People who didn't wait for the PS3 and bough the HD DVD add on, made a big mistake. The way I see it, buying the 360 now is like buying HD DVD before.

The PS3's PSN is free but not horrible. Because it has dedicated servers, games online games can actually run better. Take Call of Duty 4, the best-selling game on the PS3 and 360. According to Gamepro, this game plays better online on the PS3! Also, there's nothing on the 360 like HOME.

I was using HD DVD as an example of short term thinking, not willing to wait for a Blu-ray player. Similarly, gamers can make a mistake by not willing to wait a few months more for the bigger, better exclusives on the PS3.

This is going to be my first ever fanboyish thread, so please bare with me and keep in mind I own all three consoles, but let me fix your post: The 360 still enjoys the following advantages: 1. Multiplatform games were better on the 360 and continue to be better on the 360 in 2008 according to insert random unverifiable source here and I can say this even though we are only two months into 2008 2. Monthly world-wide sales. In 2008, this is no longer true. The PS3 sold more in the USA in January but the 360 will likely sell more in February based on no facts at all. 3. Exclusive games were better on the 360. In 2008, smart money says the 360 will have bigger, better exclusives based on my opinion. 4. HD movies capability. DVDs outsell blu ray 100 to 1 so who needs it. On the 360 you can also download movies in hd so whats the point? 5. Positive press. In 2006 and 2007, the 360 seemed to have a lot of positive press while the PS3 had to endure many negative attacks. In 2008, this will continue. 6. In 2006 and 2007, retailers like Best Buy usually encouraged their customers to buy the 360 because it had more games. In 2008, however, there are reports, it seems reasonable to me, that Best Buy will continue this. I base this on the fact that i needed a 6th point and could not make up anything better. Now they can spend more time creating content, lots of content. The PS3's Blu-ray becomes less and less useful. Apprently, Metal Gear Solid 4 uses ALL of the 50 gig in Blu-ray. Imagine that. Now in 2008, developers, especially Xbox's first party ones, seem more determined to take advantage of the processor to make kick-ass games. The 360's processor allows bungie to create amazing graphics with large enviroments. Likewise, a game that has not yet been released or detail shown will own everything ever 3. Reliability issues. nota major, major problem for the 360. It has the best warranty in the history of gaming. 4. The 360 continues to be the most anti-casual of the 3 consoles. This is a good thing 5. Noise. It's not an issue.

Dirt alone more than justified my ps3 for me. All the GOOD multiplats are identical now, the bad ports nowadays seem to be terrible games like Turok and (looks like) Dark Sector. Reliability issues don't seem to be as bad nowadays, but I still wouldn't buy a 360 until the Jasper all 65nm version comes out. It'll probably be $299 with the HDD by then anyways. If that dang Tales of Vesperia game does end up being exclusive along with those other rpg's, I'll probably pick one up then. But I s'pose us cows are pretty patient. :P

The PS3 2008 excluisves for me are a damn BAD JOKE comparing even to Fable 2 !!!!!

A lineup of generic shooters and racers, for those hat love the shallow gameplay, not for me, so PS3 is near to useless in 2008 IMO

The PS3 2008 excluisves for me are a damn BAD JOKE comparing even to Fable 2 !!!!!

A lineup of generic shooters and racers, for those hat love the shallow gameplay, not for me, so PS3 is near to useless in 2008 IMO

You should really change the topic name to "Why I think the PS3 is better than the 360"

It would be far more honest that what you have up there now.

I always dread reading these types of topics because they always wind up turning into another fanboy ad for his /her favorite console.

It's really disappointing.

4. HD movies capability. Now with HD DVD dead, there's no way to watch 1080p HD movies. The PS3 is widely considered the best Blu-ray player.

Sihanouk

When MS releases a Blu-ray add on this will not be a factor.

I think as time goes obviously it's advantage PS3. Where PS3 has been selling at the same rate that X360 was it's first couple years....it's doing it without any big software title to push the console. In 2008 that changes as well as in 2009.

But don't assume MS doesn't release the next Xbox. They've already stated they always invisioned a 5 year lifespan (which is pretty apparant by the life expectancy of the average X360 lol). Don't be surprised that just when PS3 is taking over completely in 2010 that the next Xbox is released (it'll also probably have waggle controls lol)

I own a PS3 and honestly think all consoles have their strong & weak points... However I agree that having to choose a console depends on the type of games you like... Personally loving games such as Gran Turismo, MGS, FF, GOW, Tekken etc etc etc wouldnt think of getting another console being those exclusive.. Also personally both Wii & Xbox360 have nothing to offer in terms of games... (dont get me wrong, they have excellent games, just not for me)

But for all those who claim PS3 has no games currently, I think they are blind fanboys.. Xbox360 has a huge games library but you can count the AAA titles needing just the palms of your hand, they are very very few.. as for Wii with the exception of 3 - 4 1st party developed games, the rest are mediocre games.. and if you check scores & reviews you will see its not my personal opinion but of many many others (most of them working in gaming industry)..

Sales also seem to start getting better for the PS3 although it has a lot to catch up, but as long as quality games are released, people will be more interested in buying the console...

Xbox 360s only disadvantage to me is that there are way too many games to play and not enough time to play them. My disadvantage with my PS3 was boredom until I sold it and bought more 360 games. Then it actually became an advantage again.

so you typed up all of the advantages that the 360 has lost and all of the disadvantages that remain for it without giving the advantages and disadvantegs for the ps3 and advantages lost for the ps3? this seems like a kind of one sided topic...linkin_guy109

i agree, if you are gonna make these types of topics atleast present the full spectrum.

That isn't going to happen. They already have HD downloads and the only reason they invested in HD DVD was to slow Blu-ray adoption. Releasing a blu-ray player at an added cost would serve no purpose to them. In fact it would probably hurt them as Sony has their Blu-ray player built into the PS3 already at no cost. It would be a dumb move to say the least.

First of all if I was going to buy a system tommarow why wouldent I choose a 360? Also the games are so much better IMO if I bought a PS3 I would get so bored.Hulkness

Plenty of reasons "why you wouldn't choose a 360?" Hardware issues, expensive fees and add-ons, few exclusives, limited 2008 game lineup, no Blu-ray support, etc...

I'm not sure how many games you need, but PS3 has more than I can afford coming out and I buy around 1-2 a month.

People just dont look at games anymore do they. People seem to look at systems for what they can do and not them actually doing it. but GeoW and Halo 3 are good enough for me to buy a 360.Hulkness

agree....by now the 360 is the best console! it has the best games and whats the purpose of a gaming system???

the future is an incognit! we ll have to wait and see...

The advantage bit:

1. Gamepro is full of sony fanboys, most of the things they mentioned were bull****

2. 360 is still far ahead of ps3 in total world wide sales

3. Opinion, for me 360 has better exclusive line-up then ps3, NG2, Too Human (look like a flop, but it may be good), Fable 2, Alan Wake, Banjoo 3, and the final killer....Gears of War 2 + many more!, ps3 has MGS4, Killzone 2 ( ) GT5 Demo, Resistane 2 and some more

4. Xbox 360 is built for games not movies....ps3 is though

5. what press?

6. that doesnt make ps3 a better console uhhhh

7. wasnt rumble last gen?

The disadvantage bit:

1. with the textures MGS4 has, the game would have been no more then 2gb compressed but since movie gear solid is has 99% cutscenes ofcourse it will fill up anything

2. tbh killzone 2 looks pathetic, killzone 2 is like cod4 graphically, pathetic textures but flashy effects

3. yeah ok 360 has hardware problems...but MS fixes them for free for a year (3 year for RROD) not a big problem

4. you get what you pay for, Xbox Live is superior to any other consoles online

5. yeah its noisy, you winz but it doesnt bother me

6. i am happy with 2-3 seconds extra loading times then wasting 5gb of my 35GB HDD space just for 1 game and waiting 25 minutes....in devil may cry 4 the overall extra loading time on 360 (like once you have completed the game and gone though all the loading) is probably no more then 4-5 minutes max

i still think 360 is a better buy with better game library, great 2008 exclusives (the usual cows "360 has no games for 2008" argument was weak before NG2 and Gears of War 2 were announced for 2008....now its basically asking for selfownage when saying 360 has no games for 08

It seems one-sided because the facts and wise reasoning favor the PS3 far more. I dare anyone to do the same in a factual, reasonable way to favor the 360. They can't. Not nearly as well. Because the facts are against the 360.

You use the words facts/factual 3 times in that one paragraph, and at least two times in your original post. That's 5 times... which is hilarious because you USE the word "facts" more often than you have actually STATED facts. You even go on to pat yourself on the back for your "wise reasoning" (who the hell calls themselves wise) even though a below average brussel sprout can tell that you've typed out nothing but a feverish Cow manifesto.

Go back to your Sony paymasters and report that you've failed. And ask them to spring for a dictionary. I'm assigning you some homework, to be completed before you can come back here. Look up the word "fact" so that you never have to misuse it again... oh, and look up "wise" and "reasoning" while you're at it.

That is a huge mistake to think like that. Look at the history......even MS 2 years ago said they would make a Blu-ray add on if it won the format war. MS has stated time and time again they want the X360 to be an entertainment center. It's obvously important to them seeing as how they backed HD-DVD. Right now it's impacting PS3 sales just because of the Blu-ray victory.....you don't think that is turning heads at MS?

All MS has to do is aquire a license and they can put out a player for the X360. Simple.

As for your comment on the PS3 has it built in with no cost.....lol. Have you looked at the price of a basic X360 and basic PS3. The cost has been built in from the beginning.

Multiplatform games are becoming better because developers are realizing, "Hey, it's much easier to make the PS3 game and then port it to the Xbox 360, then to do vice versa and have a nightmare."

I own both. As a gamer, if I had to give one up it would be the PS3.

I'm not sure what the majority of the lost xbox360 advantages you posted has to do with what console I would chose to buy. Should I care what people working at Best Buy think? No. Should I care what people are buying in Lithuania? No. Blu-ray is only a factore for some gamers. Most don't care.

360 advantages:

Much larger quality game selection.

Better OS and dashboard functionality. (PS3 not having in game abilities to change profile's etc. is driving me crazy as one example)

Better Online

Achievements

Price

Controller (Based on opinion, but I think majority seems to prefer 360 controller)

PS3 advantages:

Blu-ray player for home theater buffs (Biggest reason I bought one)

Disk drive is a lot quieter than 360s (at least the original 360 that i have)

Hardware is more reliable (Though I have had no issues at all with my 360 and neither has any of my friends)

You own both, and you would rather give up the PS3 if you have to choose one? Really? Seems to me like you are just another short-term, backward oriented gamer. If you have already owned the 360, it means you have already played many if not all the best games on the 360. The 360 has basically peaked, while the PS3 hasn't, and the biggest, best games on the PS3 are coming out this year. I really want to know if you will feel the same way towards the end of this year.

You mentioned price as a 360 advantage? You've lost all credibility right there. Don't tell me you are using LIVE for free. Controller?? The PS3's controller now has rumble AND motion sensing.

Online isn't that much better on the 360. Live fees. Lack of dedicated servers. No mods to multiplayer gamers like Unreal Tournament. No HOME (soon). The best game of 2007 (better than halo3) is Call of Duty 4, and it plays better online on the PS3!

A wise person doesn't just buy a console for the games already out. They also buy one for future games, developer support (world-wide install base--which favors the PS3 more and more, Sony's higher investment on first party titles, viable install base in ALL 3 territories, including Japan, etc), reliability, HD capabilities, etc.

If you already own both a 360 and a PS3, the wiser choice now is clearly to keep the PS3, in my opionion, and most other people's, too, if there is an honest poll.

This is defeantly an improvement on what the PS3 had going for it at the beginning of 2007.
