Xbox 360 vs. PS3 - the ultimate showdown

With the recent promising lineup for the PS3, that includes more than half-a-dozen titles generally estimated as 9.0's+, and an apparently silent year for the 360, some facts have escaped the grasp of SW's forum posters. Still in awe with their parade of exclusives, PS3 owners and Sony advocates have, apparently, forgotten what has made the Xbox sell more than fifty million pieces of hardware. In an attempt to enlighten PS3 and Xbox 360 owners alike, I'll present you with a list that contains the games and scores for both consoles, using Gamespot's reviews as the grounds for comparison, including all games above 8.0 score. Games that are shared with the PC will be identified.

The only criteria used for the list were score (8.0) and PS3 x 360 exclusivity. If we break it down, a larger fraction of the 360's PS3-related exclusives are shared with the PC -- the Xbox has 25% of the list's games shared with the PC, while the PS3 only has 10%. If you consider the games that are exclusive to all platforms, the brutal 21-game difference is reduced to a nine-game lead on Microsoft's part -- a lead, nonetheless.

Truth be told, it still boils down to which system has the exclusives you prefer -- but as far as raw firepower goes, the 360 is still leagues ahead of the PS3, with an even greater advantage if you don't have a decent PC to support your gaming console.

the ps3 has 12 that look AAe-AAAe, and the 360 has 3-4 AAe-AAAe scheduled for this year. (depending on if kingdoms gets released or not.)

but I think it's 16 for the 360 and 31 for the ps3.

Indeed, both systems have great libraries, although looking at the 360 AAA's, there seems to be a lack of variety. 3 of those games are Halo, 2 of them are Gears, and 2 of them are Forza. Of course there are other great games, it just doesn't have as much variety as the PS3.

For research purposes, in my opinion, this is a poor survey since only one source was used. One should find an array of sources that represent the broadest share of opinions on titles in order to conduct such as survey. If one is to conclude such lofty conclusion as the "ultimate showdown" one would hope more than just this website would be used. Seriously, who only goes by the reviews of this website when they decide to buy a game?

The two consoles have a lot more similiraties than those two fruits.

Ultimate showdown lol. The two things are the same can't you see that. Most of the games for both systems are the same games, look the same play the same. Ok there are some differences.

The ps3 is more silent than the x360. It doesn't really bother me a lot but the ps3 is nicer to the ear when it comes to operating sound.

They have different controllers and imo the x360 has the better controller to play fps games. The analog sticks are more precise (easier to operate). Thought he 4-pad of the ps3 is more precise.

The ps3 looks better than the x360. The ps3 has blue ray but cost more than the x360. Not so much more than you can buy a x360 and blue ray player for the same price as a ps3.

Xbox live gives a better service than psn but you have to pay for it. Some features and services came out a lot sooner for xbox live than ps3. Psn has catched up a lot with live so the difference isn't as big as it once was. Which makes psn more interesting now since it's free. Still the xbox live service is just plain perfect and there are sometimes promo's that makes live cheaper.

Internet browsing on ps3 is somewhat easier to start with than on x360 (you have to configure more **** I don't care about that do you?

Each console has it's exclusives. Hard to say which ones are better , you can use the ratings of gamespot, the amount of games . Anyway you put it , it's a matter of taste.

I bought an x360 in 2006 and I had a blast with it. Let me explain why...

First of all I don't really have it in for consoles but I have a budget to work with and in 2006 I had a crappy computer (p4 3ghz/x1600 pro )and I wanted to run the latest games. If I wanted a pc that was as strong as an x360 i had to pay 1500$. I mean 2 cores of 3 ghz, graphics quality equal to a 7900 gtx for a merely 270$. With my budget , the choice was easily made. I could have bought a ps3 but that costed me then 400$ and I liked the controller of the x360 a lot more. I think the controller is so good I could actually leave my mouse/keyboard combo for a couple of years.

Blue ray I didn't care for causeI still had a tube tv.

The exclusives were somewhat difficult cause I knew ps3 would come out with some great exclusives and I didn't knew what to expect from xbox 360 because the ps2 had a lot more games and a lot more exclusives but the xbox1 started later in the race. Also the ps3 was the better hardware on paper but the games that were out on both systems looked the same. By the time the ps3 would show their superior hardware I suspected I could afford a pc that was better. The ps3 hasn't shown thatit can keep up with the latest games that come out on pc (something to think about when they advertised the ps3 as the stronger console)

So the 130$ price difference and the controller pushed me into x360 territority.

So now i havebought about a half a year ago an new pc. The system is an i3 530/4gb ddr3 ram/hd 5770 which costed me 600$. This system obliterates x360 and ps3. I finally could run crysis on it. That kind of visual threat i haven't seen on any console. Still crysis couldn't run decent on any system when it came out and the ps3 and x360 came out in 2005-2006. The hardware you got for that price wasmore than a bargain. If they bring out new consoles with superior hardware for a bargain again i will buy one of them. But for now i can't see why you would still wage war over systems that are behind the times lol.

We don't wage war which system was better the snes or the megadrive. But the snes was better, better than any system even pc's :)

No, I'm saying the only criteria for making the list was score and exclusivity. I don't care if the game was an Arcade or Retail, and I'd have some Indie games up there, on both sides, if they had reviews on Gamespot.

Using the same criteria as you are, if Zen Pinball has the same weight as Alan Wake. Maybe not as far as sales go, but it's still an exclusive.

No offense, but if you want me to go through more than one site and gather the scores, you're f****** crazy. It took me long enough to gather these scores and check-proof all the games as exclusive. I was kind enough to take the reviews of a site that's generally respected, and not some biased bull****.

I don't want to spoil all your fun meatboy but if you used the data from gamerankings (which makes an average of all scores of review sites/books/magazines that have a reputation you wouldn't have had this problem). Gamespot gives a lot of good reviews but some are just way off i mean who give gta iv a 10 and worms 4 mayhem a 6. Some reviewers have bad days and i doubt they're all as objective as they should be (which is only human, nobody's perfect)

I hope you didn't do it on purpose to make a point :). I meanevery serious gamer knows about gamerankings lol

I predict a couple Kinect games for 2011 that will once again be game changers... 2012 fo sho and...

MS / Rare has got to be close to announcing at least one new Rare game.. I'd choose a new Conker but not a chance me thinks :? Banjo Threeie or perhaps even a Kinect VP would do the trick. :P

I don't want to spoil all your fun meatboy but if you used the data from gamerankings (which makes an average of all scores of review sites/books/magazines that have a reputation you wouldn't have had this problem). Gamespot gives a lot of good reviews but some are just way off i mean who give gta iv a 10 and worms 4 mayhem a 6. Some reviewers have bad days and i doubt they're all as objective as they should be (which is only human, nobody's perfect)

Gamerankings uses reviews from game-specific magazines, such as the PS3 and the Xbox 360 magazines, and is up for a bias complaint. I also gain NOTHING from using the Gamespot's review, since it's pretty fair for both sides. I find it kind of sad that you try to make it look as if I did it on purpose, though. Good job.

I can actually see a Banjo & Kazooie platformer working very well with the Kinect. And, concerning all the prejudice against the Kinect and its titles, just take a look at games like Child of Eden, coming out this year. I see some potential for the new IPs Project Draco, and, apparently, Codename Kingdoms. But, as I've stated before, I hope they maintain the regular controller as an option.

That's hardly a valid number if you simply disconsider the Kinect. You may not like it, but it's a peripheral with games that focus on it -- and it's one well reviewed peripheral, at that.

When people say that, I think they mean that those are the only names they care about not having on the PS3. You said yourself its all about which games you prefer. I will never play all the games on that list, but I certainly prefer the games on the PS3 list.

As I don't like Halo, Gears of War 2 (and 3 later) is the only game on the 360 that I care about. Hence I can say from my point of view. Gears of War is all the 360 has. However, I have Gears 1 on the PC which I will take over playing any version of Gears on the 360.

And to be honest, if you don't like Halo or Gears, the list of exclusives for the 360 looks pretty boring to a lot of people.

I don't think people most people buy 360's for its exclusives. They buy it for COD because their friends are on the 360. Thats why I bought a 360. After mine got the RROD I sold it and made the switch, convincing my friends to switch with me and we haven't looked back since.

true but they also use numbers from independent sites. All the known names in game reviewing industry are taken into account. It can't see how they are up for a bias complaint since they just take the average from like 20 review houses.So it would have been better to take the numbers from there. You would have had more average and independent scores. Now the numbers are coming from one house. Wether it is biased or not that you can't prove but if you take averages from all reviewing houses you get an independent score. The fact that i pointed out that you could have done it on purpose was just joking , you probably didn't but the numbers you gave really are leaning towards one side.

Like i said before if you took your numbers from gamerankings you wouldn't have had this problem
