I'm sure Microsoft will continue making gaming hardware; but they might not be Xbox-branded.

Microsoft has already made "Xbox" into a household name and that gaming brand has just hit 500 million active users..

why on Earth would they release a new console and not utilize the Xbox brand?..

honest question..

Not sure but MS loves to rebrand things on a whim

MSN.com, Live.com, Outlook.com, Bing.com, Hotmail.com....MS needs to fire their entire marketing team. They can't name anything properly and they can't leave well enough alone. It's another reason I avoid every single MS product outside of Xbox.

Yeah, I Herd they're going for a name change on Windows as well. They're thinking Screens is better. ;o

Congratulations on Activision's ownership of Xbox since they're the breadwinners. 🤣🤣🤣

Also, how did they manage to be down by nearly half in consoles when they're already selling like it's made out of STDs 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Seems perhaps positive development as far as keeping Xbox leadership in good graces with Microsoft executive leadership.

Not wanting to make another thread about it but on the other end it's reported players engaging in games offered through PS Plus Extra/Premium fell by 50% in July. Not a good trajectory there but then again it is summer, people go on vacation and all that.

So we will ignore that MS owns Activision and counts Activision games on PS4 and PS5? They've also been releasing Xbox titles on PS5 with Sea of Thieves being one of their most popular launches. Nah it can't be any of that.

I am sure some of those numbers are there too.

I have no doubt that Sony is counting Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 (and all DLC) on Microsoft Windows PC's, Xbox consoles and PlayStations. Just like they are probably going to count Marathon on Xbox and Microsoft Windows PC. And I am sure they will count Horizon Lego's on Xbox and Switch. And I suspect they count MLB the Show on Xbox, etc. Then I am sure Sony is counting all the PC ports, as well as all the day one on PC games coming up (12 of them), including Helldivers 2 and Concord.

Why not include those figures, it's what generates them revenue!

Some people are simply ignoring the memo:

Sony’s Future In Games Will Be In Consoles, PC, Mobile, And Cloud Says CEO

when you have software available on a multitude of hardware devices and digital storefronts, monthly-active-users (MAU) is the primary measurement of an ecosystem's install base..

and, currently, Xbox has the largest install base of active users when compared to PlayStation: 500 million to 118 million.. heck, even Nintendo has a higher MAU than PlayStation with 123 million..

these facts are the reason why cows want to keep the focus on just console sales despite what even Sony's CEO is telling them..

No. When MS tried to rebrand Hotmail, they tried to move people and their email addresses to @live.com, and that didn't work either.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook_com/forum/all/why-cant-we-create-livecom-email-addresses-anymore/63ba93df-e202-4377-b501-6b5b4da178a0

"Microsoft have discontinued @Live.com emails. So you can no longer create live.com email account. @Live emails have been replaced with @Outlook.com emails."

personally, i think the time for Xbox hardware to dominate has come and gone; even in the US.. the PS4 gen really was the worst gen to lose..

that said, with the Xbox/Bethesda/ABK line-up of games, Xbox console hardware will definitely be well received as they begin the next generation imo..

@Antwan3K: That's too bad, because when there is one common base of hardware to target, optimize for, and QA games on, a set of official accessories, official support for audio/video standards across the board, then it provides the consumer with a certain standard of support, ease of use, and quality of the experience. It would be a shame to lose that.

Luckily they will continue to make Xbox console hardware for the next gen, hopefully with a full console experience, and I would be happy if that would continue.

Since I wrote it, I understand it, so I'm not sure how I could clarify. I would need a bit more to go on than "what are you talking about?" To me the answer would be "Xbox console hardware" and it's cool to see people caring about it going forward.

what did i say that prompted that statement?..

to clarify, if your answer is indeed "Xbox console hardware", at what point did i say Xbox was not going to continue to make console hardware?..

as a follow-up, Microsoft has always maintained that they have new Xbox hardware planned.. they've stated this repeatedly throughout this generation.. so why would you be worried that Microsoft isn't making new console hardware?.. are you also worried that Sony isn't making a PS6?..

@Antwan3K: When you said "personally, i think the time for Xbox hardware to dominate has come and gone;"

Has MS been interested in spending much time in a market where they don't dominate?

Even if they weren't exiting, having less of a focus and priority on the hardware could also translate to the same on the internal development side of the product and the experience.

Anyway if I'm wrong to be concerned about that, then that's a good thing.

Xbox has over 500 million active users compared to 118 million on PlayStation and 123 million on Nintendo.. from a MAU standpoint, they are already dominating..

and taking Xbox console hardware out of that equation would only serve to lower revenue potential.. so no, exiting the console market wouldn't make any logical business sense..

https://www.thegamer.com/xboxs-hardware-console-revenue-down-42-percent/

It's no secret that Xbox has been struggling this generation, constantly playing catch up to the likes of PlayStation and Nintendo when it comes to hardware sales. It's forced the company to adopt a different approach to releasing games, as Xbox has been more willing to put its big exclusives - like Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded - onto rival platforms, with very positive results in some cases.

More than its biggest rivals, Xbox has been leaning into the "play anywhere" mantra, going so far as to market bundles with Amazon that don't require a console at all. It shouldn't be too surprising then to learn that Microsoft's hardware revenue has taken a massive beating this financial quarter, dropping by a staggering 42 percent (thanks The Verge).

There obviously isn't just one reason for this drastic decrease, but marketing could be a major factor. Xbox recently admitted that it doesn't put as much effort into marketing in territories like Europe than it does within the United States, mostly down to PlayStation and Nintendo's dominance in the region and willingness to spend more. There's also a lot of uncertainty surrounding Xbox at the moment, as higher-ups constantly have to assure fans its studios won't be shut down and its consoles won't be scrapped.

Activision Blizzard Is Bailing Out Xbox

The good news for Xbox is that content and service revenue is up by 61 percent this quarter, helped primarily by Activision Blizzard. This figure also includes Game Pass numbers, which appear to be currently unaffected by the price increase announcements from earlier this month. Those changes go into effect in September though, so we'll also almost definitely see a drop once the price increase hits.

Gaming revenue in general is also up by 44 percent, though this number has once again been bolstered significantly by Activision Blizzard. In fact, it's the sole reason as to why Microsoft's gaming revenue is in the green, as it would actually be down by 4 percent had Microsoft not acquired the publisher. It's safe to say that Activision Blizzard has bailed Xbox and Microsoft out of hot water this time around, though the Activision Blizzard boost won't last forever.

Damn.. doesn’t look MS will be selling consoles for much longer. Thoughts, SW? Is the future of Xbox to be a 3rd party software developer at this point?

Check out these companies that bailed out PlayStation after PlayStation acquired them:

Firewalk Studios

Neon Koi

Bungie

Haven Studios

Valkyrie Entertainment

Bluepoint Games

Firesprite

Nixxes Software

Insomniac

Gaikai

Housemarque

Bend Studio

Naughty Dog

Incognito

Guerilla Games

Zipper Interactive

Media Molecule

Sucker Punch

It really doesn't matter. Acquisition is acquisition. The only folks who split hairs are Sony fannies. Also Sony did acquire an "entire" publisher. 🤷🏽‍♂️

But those numbers doesn’t equate to Xbox‘s being sold, nor is it helping the Xbox consoles sell any better. The reason why Xbox is successful (software wise) is because you can play their games without even needing an Xbox or even a video game platform. It makes the most sense at this time for MS just to become a 3rd party developer and ditch the console business altogether.

addressing each sentence above:

1) No one is saying there are 500 million Xbox console sold..

2) Duh..

3) nope, that makes zero sense outside of fanboyland.. There is a console market and Xbox is making money in that console market via 1st/3rd party retail sales in their Xbox Store and via console subscriptions of Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass.. Xbox is making money with consoles in addition to what they are doing on PC, cloud, mobile, and other storefronts.. exiting the console market simply means less money for Xbox.. and this simple logic is one of the reasons why Xbox is staying in that market..

I’m willing to bet you that most of Xbox game sales comes from OTHER platforms. The same can be said for the GP and xbl gold. I’m willing to bet you that MS is losing more money than they are making with the Xbox console as a whole. Console wise they’re nearly in the same spot as Dreamcast. The only difference is that Dreamcast didn’t try to release a gimped console to undercut the competition only for it to blow up in their face.

Was actually thinking of buying the X just to help out Microsoft get through these troubled times.

It will probably be deeply discounted this holiday season

They gotta liquidate stock before 2027, so its understandable.

MS doesn't sell many consoles.

ActiBlizz brings in a lot of money.

These are shocking news.

@davillain: yeah we also have mods on PC.

That might be a good platform for warm_gun, he can remove what he doesn't like from the games he plays

I can see the mod community will make Kay more attractive for Outlaws.

The only mods I'd want are those that make my characters even uglier xD

https://www.thegamer.com/xboxs-hardware-console-revenue-down-42-percent/

You still trying to compare acquiring individual developers to acquiring an entire publisher?

Bungie and Psygnosis were both publishers until PlayStation bought them.

I’m willing to bet you that MS is losing more money than they are making with the Xbox console as a whole.

You already lost that bet. They already confirmed that Xbox is making record profits and record revenue.

Also, I wonder where all those active users came from since Xbox has been declining by double digits in the last few quarters...

Xbox consoles, Xbox Cloud, iOS/Android, Samsung TVs, Firestick, Microsoft Windows PC, where all Xbox Game Studio's games live.

Good. **** Xbox

Numbers are pretty bad overall and the only numbers that look somewhat decent are because of the ABK acquisition. Next year they're not going to have that free ticket.

The worst part, PlayStation has no games, banned boy.

@kvallyx: Sorry but I cannot support mobile gaming which is what MS is doing. I respect traditional gaming.

Mobile sucks. But Sony and MS are now in full on mobile commitment for gaming. The future is here. Just not a future I will be a part of.

So we will ignore that MS owns Activision and counts Activision games on PS4 and PS5? They've also been releasing Xbox titles on PS5 with Sea of Thieves being one of their most popular launches. Nah it can't be any of that.

You really think that an Xbox brain can think? LOL
