The console business is funny... It nets no profit for years and then turns a small percentage. It's purpose is install base as to sell software.... Microsoft basically not willing to put in the R+D, marketing and production costs to forge a traditional base.... They're skipping the line and letting everyone else go through the hastle. It's a Sega move, except Microsoft has infinitely more IP at their disposal.

Good business for THEM because people are still willing to shell out for consoles instead of making the better long-term investment which is PC.

I don't understand the console base at all. On one hand you have PS players saying that Game Pass is for broke gamers, and on the other they say PC is too expensive. SO meh.

Seems to be everyone is winning in the arrangement .. what remains to be seen is whether the traditional console model hangs on as the best way to build user base ... Seems like Microsoft is maybe betting not long.

Being that they went all in on Game Pass, the majority of their users use it on console. If you can't sell consoles... welp, sounds like a losing strategy to me. Xbox should always be a case study of what not to do in this market

That is good. One of the reason PS always been more succesful than Xbox and sometimes Nintendo is that the consoles have more games than Xbox and Nintendo.

Would love more 1st party output of course but this is a good thing. Port more games xbox! Not many buying that console anyway its better to join the PS bandwagon like Sega many years ago.

@TheEroica: I'm just gonna say this, once they leave the Xbox console and appear on another platform, they become MS games. I think it's an important detail that should not be overlooked.

It is worth noting that Koei Tecmo is technically the publisher for the two Ninja Gaidens, Microsoft seems to be aiding the games with funding & likely the reason we got the two new NG games, thanks Microsoft!

This is an entirely Xbox-branded failure, not a PlayStation problem.

Game Pass also didn’t grow as intended because its core ecosystem—Xbox hardware—is a rejected, pathetic failure. The console simply couldn’t carry its own business model.

This is nothing short of a generation-defining victory for those who chose PS5 over Xbox.

Sony literally just had a State of Play with basically nothing but multiplats and 99.9% of them coming to Xbox.

It should! They still offer a unique service that a ton of people are taking advantage of. I think if they optimize windows for handheld and offer a powerful next gen console they'll still have customers.... That said, they have not cultivated a traditional console base to the extent where they can only offer their games on a single platform, so I'm not sure what their marketing push will look like?

Sonys next gen push will be interesting too... Between going FUBAR on the price of a console, going 3rd party publisher, mixed with a much wiser customer base that knows their ps5 will be relevant for at least 3 to 4 years into the ps6 life cycle, who is Sony selling consoles too next gen out of the gate?

If the games are multiplat it doesn't matter who owns them. If you have the money to snap up every dev and publisher and decide to keep them available for other gaming ecosystems then sure you'll sell more software but MS has already made it clear their plans with Xbox and their games is to make nearly everything available on as many systems as possible. It's strange, but this is a good thing for both SONY and MS.. well, at least at this point in time.

PS5 has no games, nothing worth getting it for, but sheep still buy it. So end of the day, MS did the smart thing...just troll their entire user base. If you can't beat them, then join them. Well Phil has said they are working on a next gen console, but we all know Phil is a known liar, so we will just have to wait and see.

If they do release a next gen console, you can bet on 4 things for certain.

1) It will have NO exclusives as by then MS/Phil will have announced that pretty much all MS games will be on everything, and besides all of MS games are on PC day 1 anyway, so let's just say no "console" exclusives too.

2) It will be a diskless console, that i'm 110% sure of as they're already trying to do away with disk releases, and Phil has been moving towards that for years.

3) it will be MS last console ever.

4) if there is no disk drive, then the Series X will be my last console purchase (except for retro consoles)

I agree though. There is no more Xbox as a singular thing. It's Microsoft gaming placing it's ip on everything it can as to maximize profits.... Hardware and physical software are not in their future plans beyond making it easier to play gamepass.

Many switch 1 games require additional downloads. Dont think this practice will change tbh.

@TheEroica: Why should I care who is any game's publisher? As long as the games I want to play can be played on the PS5 I do not give a rats behind whether they are first party or not.

The PS5 is nothing more than the medium I use to play games on. Of course knowing that the majority of Microsoft's games will end up on the PS5 means I have even less reason to switch to Xbox.

At the moment there are no games I am bothered about playing that is not on the PS5. It doesn't mean there aren't some games I would consider if they were added to the PS5 but there are no games I want to play so much that I will switch mediums. The PS5 will see me well in the "next generation" so I cannot see myself buying any hardware in the near future. Once games no longer release on the PS5 then I will reconsider.

Fact is, MS has 3x more studios than Sony. That's the most important fact IF YOU INCLUDE LOGIC

Logic is not common within Xbox fandom

ultimately, the semantics doesn't matter.. if you want to call this 1st party software "Xbox" or call it "Microsoft", it doesn't actually matter in real world terms.. some people use "PlayStation" and "Sony" interchangeably in the gaming industry.. but the semantics seem to be really important to console warriors..

that said, to be clear, "Xbox" is the gaming division of Microsoft.. so regardless of how anyone wants to personally define this software, this is indeed Xbox software..

when Sony sells a PlayStation 1st party title on a PS5, it's a PlayStation game from PlayStation 1st party.. when Sony sells a PlayStation 1st party title on PC, it's a PlayStation game from PlayStation 1st party.. NPD doesn't separate out the software sales for Helldivers 2.. it's all PlayStation 1st party software.. the same applies for Xbox..

And? Sony doesn't have to play catch up anymore. MS bet it all and lost. Sony, Nintendo and their customers all reap the benefits while MS will continue to prune down the many studios they greedily took on just like Embracer until they're down to actual moneymakers. Microsoft's gonna have to settle with 70 percent across the board from the games they publish, because they're not really going to be able to obtain 100 percent.

it's a defensive reaction because these are same people that claimed "exclusives sell hardware".. yet the PS5 is still selling amazingly without any 1st party bangers and with many of their games being available on PC..

the current reality is that the most bought and most played games are multiplatform games.. it's actually "brand power" and "brand loyalty" that sells hardware.. to their credit, Sony/PlayStation cemented that when they won the console wars with the PS4..

but to admit that the PS5 is just coasting on brand power rather than stellar PlayStation software is a bit too much to swallow for fanboys.. especially since Xbox is actually the biggest publisher on the platform they worship..

Because the new stance for X-goons is to try to make this a feather in MS's cap even though Xbox games are refugees from their own platform to deal with their hopeless cope. They were highly popular in their second gen, and haven't been able to repeat it since. Exclusives matter. They do. Look at Nintendo. Their software does massive sales and dwarfs third-parties that publish on the system.

In fact, they've put it on record that exclusives are important to them. Xbox, on the other hand treated their software as completely disposable in an attempt to crash the market with GP because they over-valued their presence and always thought MS would bail them out.

Now, you have an entire industry that's pouting and holding back tears because they've spent two gens writing glow ups for all of Xbox's terrible business decisions that NEVER... EVER seem to work out. They've left a trail of some of the worst aged takes in history archived for everyone to point and laugh at.
