Apparently, most gamers don't care about 60fps, according to Spencer.

GC: What also frustrates me is that the only number I do care about is the only that you and Sony don’t obsess over. Which is 60fps, which I understand is easier to do on the Xbox One X than any other console.

PS: That’s correct. But… [laughs] Why do you care about 60fps?

GC: It’s the only number that affects gameplay and yet it’s the only one you two never go on about! No-one can tell the difference between 4K and 1080p and all that nonsense…

PS: You just broke your whole argument now!

GC: How?

PS: You just said these games could run on a Commodore 64, they would not run at 60 frames per second on a Commodore 64.

GC: Uridium did.

PS: [laughs] I’m not disagreeing with you. But it’s a subjective opinion that that’s the only one that matters.

All: [laughs]

GC: It’s the only one that affects gameplay.

PS: …visuals do affect gameplay.

GC: Not the resolution though. Not in any manner close to the difference a good frame rate makes.

PS: Don’t get me wrong. I love frame rate. I love Ori, it’s one of the reasons I love playing Forza Motorsport. But you have to go back to what you said before: most people. What frame rate does Minecraft run at?

GC: I know, but if the frame rate is below what it needs to be – and it does vary for different games – they do notice. They might not identify the problem, but they know something’s wrong.

PS: Some people do. Some people just want to have fun playing Lego Batman.

What do you guys think about this?

My opinion? Phil has somewhat of a point. Most people want to just play the game. However, sometimes to have fun playing that game, the frame rate is key. He seems to think that 60fps is only a visual enhancement only.

The other thing is that most people today don't even know what 60fps even looks like because their consoles play their games at 30fps. So of course, to them, 30fps is the norm and they're happy with it. Lego Batman at 60fps would be way better.

? Hahahahahahaha!!! Sounds like damage control for their shitty bottlenecked CPU.

He's somewhat right though most console players don't care. I care and that's why I also own a PC.

I remember trying to explain to one of my friends the difference between 30fps and 60fps. Dude is a diehard Destiny player and he didn't even know the game ran at 30fps. Sad thing is that this friend isn't a casual by any means, he and I have been playing games together since we were kids.

I don't mind 30 but 60 would be preferable. I can't see the difference because shitty eyesight but I can feel the difference when playing NBA2K17 it feels smoother.

Well devs prove him right. Most games are running at 30 and that includes most of Sonys games. PC is the only system that is and can run everything at 60 or higher

It depends on the game. Racing games and fighting games need 60 fps the most. Other games just require stable.

@NFJSupreme: they care when the FPS drops and in reality the only time FPS really matters is in First Person Shooters and Fighters. 60FPs should really be the target in those 2 genres imo

That is because most games on consoles were 30FPS but there has been an increase this gen in games shooting for 60FPS specially in the shooters area and other areas as well.

I am sure most games could run at 60FPS on consoles but the graphics would need to be sacrifice, and on console is a long tradition to trade resolution and frames for visuals.

He's not wrong. The average consumer doesn't even know about framerates, let alone have a preference for it. But I do understand there's some damage control going there.

Of course 60fps is better, but the same goes for 120fps. There are just trade-offs to be made, and most people don't care that much so the choice is easily made. Not that hard, although I already see that cows have a difficulty with it

What's the point of 30 Fps ?

I'd rather my games be 5k and 24fps.

Assassin's creed unity showed 24fps is just fine!

Yeah I'm sure most gamers don't care, or even think about it tbh. But I'm also pretty sure that most gamers don't squabble over the differences between 720p, 900p, 1080p, etc. outside of forums. So not really seeing that as an argument.

Anyways, Phil isn't wrong, he's basically saying gamers have no standards, duh.

Jim Ryan said old games look like shit and no one wants to play them, no Sony wont have BC and no Sony wont do crossplay.

But here buy this Crash remaster collection, and Shadow of the Colossus again for the 4th time.

Wheres the cow outrage?

Anyway...

Gears 4 runs 60fps in MP.

Halo 5 runs 60fps in MP

Forza runs 60fps in MP.

KI runs 60fps in MP.

Seems like MS knows when 60fps is important.

@xxyetixx: fps, racing games, fighting games are all 60fps this gen. Its a given and not what spencer is talking about. He's saying no one cares that tomb raider or uncharted are 30fps. Helll the millions of people playing Destiny dont care its 30fps. People want stable framerates 60fps is plus for most genres

Depends on your definition of "most people", which is certainly a moving target. Even within the console market you have sub groups.

You've got the more hardcore gamers who purchase and play a ton of video games. These people will care about 60fps and are most likely to ditch consoles for a PC. Definitely the smallest group.

You've got your dedicated gamer who plays tons of and tons of video games, but doesn't necessarily get into the industry that much. 60fps for them is still probably going to be more important and they could tell you the difference of feel between a game like CoD and Uncharted 4.

Then there will be your "gaming is just one of my past times" kind of people. We're talking owning probably just one console and playing it anywhere from 5-20 hours a week depending on what's going on in their lives with "big" games they were excited for being binged. These gamers don't care. These kind of gamers probably can tell the difference between 60 fps and 30 fps but it's not a dealbreaker. This is your largest group of gamers.

The final group is going to be the "I haven't touched my game console in a month" kind of people. They bought one on a whim, but rarely use it to play video games. They may pick up the 2-3 biggest releases a year and play it for a few hours and be done with it. These people also don't care at all.

I think it's a bit of an ambiguous statement and clearly not a strong position for a console manufacturer to take. They should be, at all levels, striving to give the best experience possible, not trying to make the excuse that people don't care.

@Wasdie: 'most people' is just that, no need to over complicate things, and I would say the statement is correct - most of us don't care. Similarly most of us don't care about 4K either.

Phil is full of it.

The scorpio isn't for the masses, therefore it doesn't matter what the masses think. The people that will actually own a xbox scorpio will high likely do care otherwise they wouldn't buy it in the first place.

It seems like phil is slowlee starting to see there PR nonsense is falling through the floor rather quickly. Gona be fun to see when they decide not to share sale numbers of the scorpio, because there is no market for this.

That's not it at all. It's more like games have become more complex and the demand for more power increased exponentially in such a short time. Console manufactures haven't been able to catch up with that demand, which is why 30FPS is the standard. And in a lot of cases, games on consoles struggle to even hit that. The excuse Phil gives is that it's because gamers don't care about 30 fps. That statement is half true.

"Most people just want to play the game" - if that's true, which it probably is, then those people would just buy a regular PS4 and One.

That said, the audience Sony and MS are targeting with the Pro and X do care about specs, frame rate and resolution. I suspect that at 1080p+, most people in this category care more about frame rate than resolution. As the interviewer said, 4K is nice, but on a TV at proper viewing distance 60fps will have more of an impact on the experience (depending on the game).

I personally would take 1080p/60 over 1440p or 4K checkerboard/30 anyday.

Well he's not necessarily wrong. Many of my XBL/PSN friends aren't into heavy gaming as much as myself, (I game heavy on my PC) and they couldn't care less about 30fps v 60fps as long as it's locked and not jarring.

I basically play PS4 exclusives and rarely play any 3rd party games but the rest are always gonna be on PC for 60fps cause with better framerates, the better the gameplay but console gamers wouldn't know that anyway.

Well, ppl like visuals, spectacles, the Spiderman trailer is a manifestation of this, couldn't they go with lower visual fidelity and achieve 60fps? Of course they could've, but why would they? when you can make ppl go nuts by higher visual fidelity you'd definitly sacrifice fps

The fact is, 60fps is not good for marketing but visuals are

He's right you know....the mainstream masses don't care about 60 FPS.

The hardcore/techies are usually the only group (which is a minuscule fraction of the FPS/gaming market) who care about anything over 30.

There it is. Marketing. Making them money. It's not about how gamers perceive 60fps. It's about what makes them the most with the least amount of effort. If you can't make a console that's capable of both high fidelity and frame rate, then be honest that you chose fidelity because it's more cost effective for your business.
